Accord Oud
This fragrance opens with spicy, pungent woods and a sweet, vibrant red berry note. This combinations is rather unusual, but the mix of fruit and resin, sparkly sugar and rich woods is very interesting. As the notes bloom on my skin I detect a third note, saffron. The spice is lush and fatty and therefore the ideal base for the accord. As the scent develops, the fruit aroma soars into the air, whereas the woods sink to the base. In this stage I see all three notes very distinctly, they are separate, layered on top of each other. Once the berry notes have burned out, saffron engulfs everything that remains, peppery woods frame the smooth spice note, giving it a welcome edge. This is the heart accord of the scent which remains the same until the fragrance disappears with a final whisper of the main notes.

Accord Oud
WRoth described the top and middle well. The sweet top notes do not prepare you for the leathery dry down. This scent last a long time despite me washing my hand. The leather and patchouli stick around for a long time. The sillage is in the middle.

The Expensive Scent of... Nothing Much
This perfume is disappointment in a bottle, at least for me. I usually don't care much about projection or longevity when reviewing, but here it's worth mentioning because this fragrance lacks both and no, I'm not nose blind.

The opening greets you with blackberry, which is easily the most detectable note. Alongside it, there’s a hint of alcohol presumably rum, but it’s so mild it barely registers. What I surprisingly picked up quite quickly was the clary sage.

Now, the oud… it feels watered down, too clean, almost synthetic. It gives off the vibe of “hey, this is oud, but don’t worry, it’s special and inoffensive,” like it’s been sterilized for people who don’t actually like oud in the first place.

The leather here is overly clean as well it reminds me more of brand new shoes or an "expensive leathery bag" that is on sale with a heavy plastic coating. It’s there, but only if you really search for it.

I’ve seen some people mention a slightly animalic note, but honestly, I get none. If there is any animalic quality here, it’s the smell of an animal that’s been killed, thoroughly cleaned, and prepped for taxidermy. If I had to describe it, it’s closer to the sterile scent of a stuffed animal than anything animalic.

I’d like to call this perfume minimalistic, but even that feels like an overstatement. In the end, it’s just a mild, underwhelming fragrance with a synthetic edge and nothing particularly memorable about it.

The Pitfalls of Copy & Paste
When it comes to copy & paste, one can notoriously make a huge mistake. This applies not only to highborn wannabe-doctors, but a similar error has occurred at Byredo:

The in-house poet had called up the old file of Oud Immortel to write the new sermon directly in the correct text format. It had to be done quickly, considering there were five new releases in 2010. While creating the title line, he simply copied the term “Leather Accord” from the pyramid as the name for the stuff, even correctly omitting the “Immortel,” but then accidentally deleted the “Leather” instead of the “Oud.” Silly. Now the stuff is called Accord Oud instead of Leather Accord, and Byredo just pretends that the two fragrances somehow belong together. And everyone else is sent on a wild goose chase looking for the agarwood.

It must have been like that, because: “Where is Oud?” I feel like the esteemed water lily. I recognize no Oud. Not even a replica like in Oud Immortel. Nothing of the sort follows later (in the famous “Where-is-Behle?” question from Bruno Moravetz, Jochen Behle at least showed up).

However, this doesn’t bother me at all. I am satisfied with the so-called leather accord, especially since the wannabe Oud in the accidentally mishmash Oud Immortel didn’t really excite me.

But perhaps I should start earlier: Blackberry. Aha. Count me out. Alternatively, a consumptive one. Saffron gives the leather a dry, rough elegance that I quite like. Regarding rum, a quote from my favorite colleague: “Rum…hm…I can convince myself.” Nothing to add to that. Sage (while I’m already checking things off): Not explicitly, more as a bitter addition in the background. For patchouli and powdery musk, however, a ‘cheers’ to my colleague, who - unlike me - identified both in the third hour, and without any announcement!

For me, a leather note develops practically immediately, reminding me of Cuoio by Pal Zileri. Nice. After a few hours, I feel somewhat at home, as the leather note takes on that throat lozenge-sweet licorice quality that is pleasantly familiar from other Byredos. The fact that I can tolerate this well should not disguise that there should be some variety at some point.

Nevertheless, I do not share the largely unanimous disappointment. I find the prevented Leather Accord quite decent. It spares me that often intrusive fruity note that has apparently been compulsively part of too many corresponding fragrances since 2007. Gradually, it glides from rough to sweetly subtle and remains appropriately persistent. After spraying it on at seven in the morning, the leather note was still distinctly present until around 3 PM, although it became distorted in a typically Byredo manner (see above) towards the end. Eventually, I also smell the musk, finally, I might almost say. By 4 PM, it’s practically over. I find that perfectly fine.

Whether it is a candidate for purchase, I do not know yet. It might be a bit too plain overall. It’s enough that I work in accounting. I don’t need to smell like that.

Constrained Raw Material
Right from the start, the scent is difficult to describe and can only be formulated in images.
It begins wonderfully leathery, but not just that. With a dried-fruit depth, Accord Oud smells old, not necessarily antiquated as the scent is modern. More like old furniture, very old dark brown wooden furniture, the kind you discover through the haze of dust stirred up in your grandparents' attic. They are simple yet possess an undefined elegance.
The scent evokes for me a sense of the past and loneliness. Nevertheless, it conveys a muted elegance, not so much a dull thud but rather pulsating and awakening.
It is a craftfully great composition. You can feel how raspberry, rum, and leather notes enter into a symbiosis here, but you can't really smell it; this scent is too intertwined.
When I am in my parents' attic during the height of summer, I feel the stuffy dry air in my throat, the unbearable heat, and the longing for a refreshing fruit ice that only dries my throat out more. That's somewhat how Accord Oud is. Dry, dusty with a hint of withered fruitiness. Around me, old wood and old armchairs.
The transition to the top note is very subtly progressing.
The sage gives itself completely to its light note and smoothly replaces the fruity dry notes of the top note with equally dry but wood-heavy notes. A bitter, harsh note sets in and firmly establishes the end of the top note.

Accord Oud somehow comes across as a constrained scent. It doesn't fully open up and hides itself more and more as the scent develops. It also becomes weaker.
Cinnamon is supposed to be in there as well. I actually smell nothing of spicy cinnamon and saffron. I probably missed that.
After a promising start, I was also waiting for something to be expected. Nothing.
The scent becomes downright boring. The dry down is merely a subtle patchouli.
The oud, as the name promises, is found in a new interpretation. Formerly the prima ballerina of the scent, it is here very subtle and shy. You can smell the resinous, sultry wood character with an earthy undertone.
Unfortunately, I don't know Oud Immortel, but both are said to be "exaggerations" of original ideas. But read for yourself.

Ben Gorham on Accord Oud:
“I got to know the smell of oud in India and the Middle East. Its distinctive and intense character impressed me greatly. I felt the need to focus entirely on the uniqueness of this raw material and create a scent that draws exclusively from the character of oud. During the development, I found that different facets of this complex wood type were even more pronounced when combined with other essences. In the end, I liked two very different interpretations the best, and I decided to present them as a pair. In both cases, they are exaggerations of the original idea.”

Although I find the idea to be great in my opinion and nose, the execution leaves much to be desired. It's as if the perfumer lost interest after the heart note. The realization of the idea is too simple and too unremarkable for me. More than up to the top note doesn't reach me; after that, Accord Oud loses itself in woody pseudo-minimalism. Accord Oud feels unfinished, going from initial greatness to being unremarkable.
The opening was so promising, the ending so unremarkable.

Woody-sweet-spicy-fruity. Same oud-patchouli combo as in Oud Immortel, this time w/ actual fruitiness & mild leather, rounded out w/ sage.

I blind tested this and liked it, until the patchouli kind of took over in the dry down. Would be fine for the patchouli lovers though

In the harbor dive, there are fruit bowls full of powdered blackberries, herbal liqueur, old faded leather chairs, clay floor. Beautifully quirky.
