Earth Liquor
I am still debating between this and the Patchouli from Santa Maria Novella. I love the smell of Patchouly Indonesiano more, but the Santa Maria slightly takes the edge because it performs better on my skin. However, I think that Patchouly Inodnesiano is meant for colder weather. This stuff is no joke - the purest, darkest, earthiest, and most straightforward Patchouli perfume you'll ever find. I'm not sure on the formula, but I wouldn't be surprised if they used just patchouli oil at a very high concentration. The fragrance is so oily and sticky that it clogs the atomizer. When sprayed, it leaves an oily sheen, and it behaves much like an essential oil. I'd love it to push out just a tad more because I adore the smell, and I'd like to get more wafts through the day. It lasts for a long time, though, and it is lingering beautifully on the skin. But the smell, oh my, to me, it is Patchouli perfection. There are no fillers here; no spices, no woods, no resins, and no florals. This is like pressing your nose against the shrub and then pulling it barehanded from the ground and smelling the dusty earth on the leaves as well as the soil clinging to the roots. It feels like being buried alive beneath a patchouli bush.

It doesn't evolve much throughout the wear, but its profile is so complex that you'll always experience different facets and never get bored. It opens up like a shot of warm liquor made of earth. Boozy, spicy, warm, and with a dark cocoa-like undertone. This is the darkest, least sweet cocoa you can imagine. Then it emits bits of camphor, earthy facets, and progressively becomes dustier as it develops. When I say dusty, I mean earth dust. The scent of earth when it's hot outside and gets hit by the rain, but not as diffusive, rather thick that you could chew it. So perhaps, earth dust that has collected on the leaves of the shrub, and you take a bite without washing it beforehand (I do that with mint leaves). A scent that most likely won't find appeal in today's market, but if you like earthy perfumes, patchouli, and dark-themed fragrances, it should be on the list to try. It also reminds me of a dusty attic that hasn't been entered for decades. Impressive stuff from Farmacia SS. Annunziata. Unexpectedly bold and high quality.

Puristic
Oh, has my sample gone off? I sense a hint of Maggi - the esteemed Palonera once pointed out to me that this can be a sign of such things. Hmm, it could also be interpreted as … (I realized this only later!) or salty licorice. On the other hand, a sample from December 2013 is unfortunately not the freshest material anymore. However, within the first minute, the Maggi-XXX… (I realized this only later!)-licorice idea initially fades away and earthy notes emerge from below.

The initial impression doesn’t completely vanish, but I now remember that I experienced a similar sharp-herb-spicy sting some time ago during a store test of the Patchouly by Etro (it must have been the EdT). Well, today it certainly doesn’t smell “spoiled” in any way, but simply like patchouli, sharp-spicy and earthy at the same time.

As it progresses, I find myself - although I don't know pure patchouli oil - somewhat in agreement with a previous commentator. The linearity of the scent easily justifies a feeling of boredom, and I occasionally ask myself: Is there more to come?

Not much. It glides through the day; the only change is that the herb-spicy note very slowly shifts towards… - and then, only in retrospect, a thought of an aroma that also fits at the front arises: The thing slowly moves towards dusty bitters(!), while the continental drift whizzes by.

Conclusion: For purists.

I thank MisterE for the sample.

Patch As Patch Can
You want patchouli? You get patchouli! And it comes full force, straight to the point, without any frills or fuss.

As can be easily seen from the fragrance pyramid, it contains only patchouli - that's all you need. Or can we really trust the claims?

At first, a menthol-like or ethereal note seems to have sneaked into the perfume, as if the scent desperately wants to grab attention and open the nose to properly welcome the patchouli. No worries - this is actually quite typical for the oil of the East Asian mint family.

So it doesn't come across as dark and musty, but rather almost bright and friendly, yet with a gentle rawness that spreads earthy-woody.

I did a bit of research on patchouli (this is at least the correct German spelling) to justify my know-it-all... uh, clever... uh, smartypants aura. Surely some Parfumo users have mentioned it before, but here it is again for everyone who didn't know: There is actually a distinction between Indian and Javanese patchouli - both can come from, among others, Indonesia and are primarily cultivated to extract oil for perfumes and patchouli scents.

The difference: Javanese oil is considered inferior, but the scent has a special note (whatever that may be). If anyone knows more, please leave a comment.

For our Patchouli Indonesiano, the manufacturer does not provide specific information about which type of patchouli it is. It doesn't matter - it smells unsurprisingly linear with a good eight hours of longevity, although it becomes a bit darker and duller towards the end, almost as if a subtle chocolate accord could sneak into the drydown at any moment. But that doesn't happen!

I think hardcore patchouli fans will quickly embrace this perfume with open arms - others might be quite puzzled as to why a single ingredient can cause such a stir. For some, it may be enough, while others may find something lacking - that's for each person to decide!

Un-Grufty Patchouli
While browsing for patchouli fragrances, I discovered Patchouly Indonesiano. I read that Indonesian patchouli is supposed to be lighter in scent. Not uninteresting! So I ordered it blindly again, just based on the descriptions I found.
The patchouli is dry; it is not the damp, crypt-like quality one typically associates with patchouli. It evokes sunny patchouli fields, not the dark, foggy crypts one might imagine. And yet, it is unmistakably patchouli. Patchouli, unembellished, earthy-herbaceous, but dry. Different, but very, very beautiful.

...it can always get worse!
I probably approached this fragrance under false pretenses, spoiled by Ramon Monegal's "Mon Patchouly." It was actually through RM that I truly became aware of patchouli, consciously perceived it, and learned to appreciate it.

What could be more natural than to try a pure patchouli scent? Had I known what awaited me, I would have passed on it.....

Filled with anticipation, I spritzed some PI on the back of my hand and couldn't believe what wafted into my nose....a disgusting herbal, earthy, dry, and biting smell. I sent up desperate prayers to heaven that it would stop quickly, but it lingered and almost got worse. There was no change for me, nor did the scent become any softer or warmer. A smell like a thunderclap, a punch in the face, all I can think of are negative associations. The few drops practically burrow into my skin, and I can no longer tolerate the scent.

In the end, the cleaning alcohol wins out, at least to eliminate the worst of this horror.

If you enjoy scratchy scents, PI will surely satisfy you, but it has terrified me!

Holy Grail Patch material. This one takes it a step further than the Santa Maria. No filters, pure nature, dark, ancient.

Spicy patchouli, nothing more, nothing less; quite strong and powerful, but, for example, I find Psychedelique much better.

they lead over damp earth.
Linear patchouli scent,
not too dark and not musty.
I like it.
