Magic Carpet Ride.....
I am astounded at the beauty of this fragrance! I received a small sample of this wonderful scent, and didn't bother to try it for a long time. I don't own any Armani scents, so wasn't anxious to try this, as wasn't familiar with the Prive collection. I was blown away with this fragrance! Rich...that isn't even the word..more like deep, and haunting. A magic carpet ride..intriguing, and long lasting. Longevity is incredible, as very few fragrances will last on my skin, but, this is like a wonderful song, it has it's high notes, and mellow notes, but plays loud, and clear! What a rose! A leading lady, supported by Oud, Patchouli, and vanilla. All the notes are there, the opening is teasing..like a cologne. Interesting, but beckoning you to wait. Then, the beginning of the song starts..a slow melody of violet, saffron, with a twinge of rose. Then, a burst of notes! It evens out to something really special..The rose seems to float in between the gorgeous patchouli and Oud. I have never had a fragrance that drifts..it is soft one moment, then strong the next moment, and this is after wearing it for 8 hours and more! I'm in love...this is my Magic Carpet Ride Fragrance!

Rose, Oud, Patchouli... And Norlimbanol?...
Rose d'Arabie opens with a rubbery Oud and slightly jammy rose duo supported by underlying saffron spice. As the composition moves to its early heart the rose grows in strength as the Oud slowly recedes, gradually replaced by relatively sanitized patchouli and a vague synthetic burnt woody accord. During the late dry-down the rose finally dissipates to a whisper as the burnt woods smooth out, tamed by soft powdery violet and vanilla through the finish. Projection is excellent and longevity outstanding at well over 12 hours on skin.

Rose d'Arabie is yet another rose, Oud and patchouli composition. It seems like these are popping up everywhere nowadays and perfumers are looking for new ways to distinguish their compositions from the pack. Unfortunately in this case, the key distinguishing factor lies in the crucial mid-section, with the "tool" used to accomplish the objective being norlimbanol. It must be extremely difficult to control how the norlimbanol derived synthetic smelling burnt woody accord interacts with other ingredients used in compositions because in nearly every instance where the stuff is detected it overpowers everything else in its path. In all fairness to Rose d'Arabie, the faux burnt woods do not come on quite as strongly as they do in many other guilty culprits, but once they arrive it is "game over" as far as I'm concerned. If one can get past the mid phase, the late dry-down is quite pleasant as violet meshes with slightly sweet vanilla to create a gentle powdery, slightly sweet finish with the remnants of the rose now adding subtle support. The bottom line is the $285 per 100ml bottle Rose d'Arabie is not just your average rose, Oud and patchouli composition, but the synthetic woods in the heart ruin what would otherwise be a winning concoction, barely earning it a "good" rating of 3 stars out of 5. With the hefty competition in the rose, Oud and patchouli space like Ex Idolo's Thirty-Three it is hard to recommend this relatively expensive offering by Armani.

The dark roses of the East
This was a blind mystery sniff given by a fellow perfumista. I'm giving you this straight off the notepad as it was smelled with no prior knowledge at the time of its origins, title, make, perfumer or price range.

On skin, initially quite a mysterious, chemical composition, a dark powdery gourmand, vanillin, a sharpish herbal spike like a thyme or oregano, tonka type sweet, cashmeran musty, rich and fruity like plum, iris type deep floral, clean. Drying down to patchouli-esque amber. A touch of something naughty in here, like old sex or mucky animal, civet-like. A second wearing found more woods, a transparent quality like dry paper, like the norimbanol note. The unidentifiable flower came over as more towards a hyacinth/chemical muguet the second time with a tonka feel, like a touch of the classic Guerlain spicy sweet powdery accord.

On paper, less shouty, less sweet and more floral, like a narcissus influenced very rich lily/rose, possibly orange side of citrus, fruity, sweet fruity orrissy powdery, possibly violetty/irissy. Cleaner fresh but interesting darker note like stones. Definitely a patchouli in here. Second trying detected a boozy quality, and the flower was hard to identify blind. It didn't jump out as a straighforward flower, it seemed darker, spicier and more mysterious than any I could identify.

The rose/saffron/oud became obvious on the reveal of course. Some of the perfumes guessed, just to position this scent and not for direct comparison, were, Dry wood by Ramon Monegal, Timbuktu by L'Artisan, Opus V by Amouage, Arabian nights by Jesus del Ponto, Oud Shamash by the Different Company, Midnight Oud by Juliette has a gun, Harrods Bond No 9 Oud Patchouli or New York Oud.

It took me a long time to guess this one. Dark, fairly harsh initially, and very mysterious. It gets softer as it dries down with the dry woody papery note remaining.

One of the best
As far as I am concerned, the gold flake version is exactly the same as the original Rose d'Arabie fragrance. I love dark roses, and have owned and sampled a multitude of them and still, Rose d'Arabie remains one of my all time favorites. There is something totally magical and unexplained about it. The best way I can describe it is that it is best smelled from far away. When smelled from a distance, it takes on an airy, rosey, woody vibe which is missing when you smell your own arm up close. The magic is in wearing this sprayed on the stomach and noticing as it wafts up at you throughout the day. Up close, it smells very much like any other dark rose.

The longevity and sillage are absolutely impeccable. The gold dust in the bottle does leave a shimmer on the skin but that is lost to me since I apply the fragrance on my stomach. It looks nice in the bottle but you have to shake it for a while to get all the particles dislodged. I want to point out that the particles are tiny and do not look like glitter but a true shimmer.

Yet another rose/oud/patchouli/saffron combination. It's pleasant, but lost among the crowd of similar fragrances.

Love this!!! It’s not unusual but it’s a beautiful creation! Similar but lighter than Nerosa, Miracle of the rose and portrait of a lady.
