Unjustly Banned!
It is what it claims to be: certainly not a scent-maker, even if this has largely gone unrecognized and unappreciated. That’s why "Emporio Armani City Glam for Him" now resides in perfume heaven. It embodies an aura that appears mysteriously fresh yet smoothly alluring, prompting the question of what creates this wonderful scent microcosm.

The shine of the city has received an olfactory profile. But what is City Glam(our)? That is the core question that is not so easy to answer. Literally, just as it pertains to the scent, because the abstract allure is hard to fathom. When a fragrance withstands every analysis, it is usually not a bad sign. Especially since the perfume is not aloof because it seems faceless. Subtle masculinity is elegant. It is as sweet as it is lightly citrusy bitter, but also woody or refreshingly cool and yet smooth in a comforting sense, sometimes almost powdery. A diamond indeed has many facets.

A city does too, and the glamorous sides of it are filtered out here. No single component dominates; rather, they interact in such a way that each individual character blurs, but the overall work is not diluted. This may lead to confusion, as "City Glam" is not a bomb of intensity; it prefers the quieter tones, yet it possesses so much charisma that its charm is not solely due to understatement. How it achieves this is not exactly known; it can only be guessed at.

Bitter orange is lightly refreshed by a kiss of mint, but hardly noticeable, rather discreet - ginger lends the harmony a slight sharpness, and the green woody notes nestle the whole thing in a masculine context. In the background, white musk resonates, which here serves not only as a fixative but also has the opportunity to spread its own character.

This is incredibly sexy and wonderfully apt in the overall package when it comes to representing the elusive and mysterious glamour of the city in fragrance form. Not literally as a questionable best of city scents, but one knows exactly what Annick Ménardo and Olivier Cresp intended when one gets to experience it - namely to portray the shine of a metropolis. This is achieved in a brilliant manner and results in the most underestimated fragrance masterpiece of recent years. Pure glamour with an incredible amount of appeal and substance. "City Glam" is both illusion and reality!

First
With this fragrance, everything started for me. Back then, without Basenotes or even Parfumo. I just got tired of Axe and the like, so one day I sneaked into one of the better-stocked drugstores (I think it was Müller) and randomly tried out some of the men's fragrances available there. I remember feeling quite uncomfortable and constantly looking around to make sure none of my acquaintances happened to walk by. Well, we were just those East German old-school machos, and you only got perfume as a birthday gift from your mother, so you might finally bring a girl home instead of playing Counter-Strike all day ;D

Anyway, I sprayed 2-3 things from Armani on myself because I knew Armani and thought I couldn't go wrong with that. Then it was out the door, arms a bit out to the side, as if I had muscles, looking cool, and off home. On the way, I sniffed at my forearms as inconspicuously as possible, and it turned out that I really liked one of the candidates. It was City Glam for him. Back then, I couldn't have described what it smelled like at all. I just knew that I liked it a lot, and shortly after, I had also won it on eBay.
For a while, I was quite happy with it, practically bathing in the stuff, and the fact that no nasty comments came my way speaks for the fragrance, I think. It really isn't as bad as it comes across on Basenotes.

The scent: Today, of course, it doesn't blow me away like it used to, but now, freshly sprayed on my arm, I still like it. However, the big catch is still very noticeable: It smells absolutely, not at all, and in no way like the name suggests. City?... Glam?... No, definitely not! It leans more towards freshly washed laundry, maybe with a hint of spring air (to put it poetically). Specifically, I smell a very pleasant, fresh mint, perhaps a little bit of bitter orange, ginger, all resting on a nice, soft musk. Vetiver? Oakmoss? Maybe somewhere in the background, far outside my olfactory perception.

If all of this is so nice, why then so many bad reviews on Basenotes? Well, Emporio Armani City Glam does smell a bit like chewing gum, especially in the top notes. However, this is really not a bad thing. The impression fades relatively quickly, leaving a nice fresh laundry scent.
It's also not necessarily the most innovative fragrance, and perhaps the inappropriate name adds to that. The accusation of smelling synthetic comes up a few times, but I have no idea what that means or what's supposed to be wrong with it. It certainly doesn't smell like solvents or any industrial waste ;)

For me, therefore, no really serious flaws. I give it 70%, for a really nice, clean, "freshly washed" scent. 70% Maybe also because everything started with it ;)

Very similar to Guerlain L'Homme Idéal Cologne. Both discontinued. If you like fresh vetiver you will love this.

It's a shame this fragrance hasn't received much attention. Lalique and Co. don't even come close. Spicy yet very pleasant.

One of my first fragrances. The grasses come through beautifully and the ginger adds a nice spice to it all. Unfortunately a bit shy at H/S.

With this fragrance, I learned to love perfumes. After a long search, I ended up with Lalique White. It resembles the best.
