The Sphinx
A sphinx is a mythical animal, and in Greek mythology treacherous and merciless with the head of a woman. She is also a guardian and people have to find the right answer to her riddle if they want to get past her. Perhaps this is why Grès named this fragrance Sphinx and combined it with Greta Garbo. Through her life and later stardom, she was very shy and tried to stay out of the lights, which her fame had turned on. She moved away from Hollywood to live an anonymous life in New York. You could say that she was a Sphinx. that let no one in.
Hommage à Greta Garbo by Grès is really fresh, yet volatile and somehow lacking personality and substance. Flighty and fruity. The Yuzu-Peach mix in the beginning is promising with the lychee adding a bit of acid. The Peony soon appears and makes a nice impression. But then something happens and the smell, to my nose, becomes the one of wall paint? And as the fragrance dies out, very soon, the promised notes of cedar wood and musk never appear.
I do find this a rather sad tribute to such an icon from the movies. Greta Garbo deserves more.
