Be Classy, Be Cool
This is a perfect, modern, new and fresh fragrance: A true and ultra-cool head turner... From Guerlain.

IMO, this is a big "punch on the table" over designer's fragrance trends.

-------------

- Longevity: 7h +/-.

- Projection: First average (1-2h), then moderate for most of its lifetime.

- Mood: It's an invigorating, delicious and refreshing fragrance... It always suits you: It's modern. It's classy. It's cool.

- Scenario & Occasions: Always. Ideally, LHI Cool is perfect for spring and summer, but you can wear it perfectly all year round, because it's really nice on cold days, too.

---------- A delicious fougere led by mint and almond.

Do you need a new & fresh winning horse..? Something classy , modern and cool..?

- Well, here it is.

L'Homme Ideal Herbal
I'm a sucker for mint in fragrances and to be honest most of the mint oriented fragrances fail IMHO. Either their mint is too synthetic or to candy like, too fleeting or to subtle so it's been hard to find the right mint fragrance and when I first heard about L'Homme Ideal Cool it went straight into my wishlist, I was hyped because of the great track record of this line.

L'Homme Ideal Cool gets a lot of hate and not for being bad or having bad performance but because it's supposed to come out to replace one of the line's darlings, L'Homme Ideal Cologne which was discontinued. I love the Cologne version, it's just amazing and I'm fortunate enough to have one bottle so I just couldn't hate Cool for a decision that was made by Guerlain.

When I first tried Cool at a store I loved it, I was enveloped by that opening which is as much as you can get from a tester bottle and a strip but I never got to try it again. Seemed to have disappeared from every department store so I just couldn't remember exactly how it smelled, thought it was discontinued just like the one it came to replace. Could this be? Fast forward a couple of years and I found a 50ml at a discounter and I didn't even think about it, I purchased as quick as I could and I finally got it.

Cool opens with mint for sure, but it's not a sharp or synthetic mint, it's more of a herbal mint. The almond is there but not as present as Cologne, I wish it has a bit more of that almond but it's fine, you do get the hints of it now and then and I also get a some bergamot, vetiver and the patchouli however it's more of a greener version of both, Cool feels very herbal to me.

They say smells are very connected to memories and I recall when I was a kid there was a soap (shower soap) my mom used to buy, it was green and very herbal and I loved it so, needless to say I love L'Homme Ideal Cool

Unique modern fresh fragrance for the summer!
L'Homme ideal Cool from Guerlain is a wonderful fresh, warm weather fragrance that is unique and very likable.

It gives you something else compared to most summer colognes. It's still fresh and citrusy, but it also has this rather unique sweet, creamy almond note that runs through the top and middle notes of the fragrance and then settles in the clean, fresh vetiver surrounded by crisp and cool metallic ambroxan that keeps the fragrance from becoming too sweet. The sweetness is also ballanced well by the citrus and mint and fennel notes that make the fragrance very refreshing and invigorating. There also are some aquatic notes, but they are not the focus of the fragrance.

This is a beautiful summer and spring fragrance that is suitable for any occassion. It's very modern in its use of ingredients and the way it's constructed.

Longevity is comendable for a summer citrus fragrance 7hr+ with moderate projection for the first 2 hours then it radiates closer to the chest.

People universally love it and are always pleasantly surprised.

I would say it's well worth the money, but is unfortunately discontinoued.
Thankfully I got myself a back-up bottle.

Green is Hope
Green is hope: as the color of spring, as the color of renewal in Christianity, as the color of the prophet in Islam, as a signal color on traffic lights, as the color of an emerging party, in organic food. However, I think even more of a novel by TC Boyle, which uses the green of sprouting and then wilting marijuana seedlings to satirically and ironically depict the decline of a hippie commune. Regardless: green also works well in advertising, and it seems almost a sign of the times that two particularly successful brands (Davidoff and Guerlain) are launching a green men’s fragrance almost simultaneously.

Basically, I am initially skeptical about all fragrances in the L'Homme Ideal line. Both EdT and EdP and Intense were far too sweet with almond for my taste. Men’s gourmands are generally a horror for me, although I must admit that Guerlain has done a decent job in this case. The sport variant, on the other hand, I find completely unsuccessful and will leave it out of further considerations.

So where does L'Homme Ideal Cool (what a terrible name...) stand in comparison to the other versions of this now extensive series (I wouldn't even want to call them flankers given their different orientations)?

The similarity mentioned several times to the Cologne, which I find to be very well done, is somewhat misleading, in my opinion. The family resemblance is more evident through the almond note, which, if one considers the newer women’s fragrances from Guerlain as a reference, seems to be something like the new Guerlinade. In the L'Homme Ideal line, it has been consistently transferred to the men’s line. This has a certain internal logic and is therefore not even unappealing to me. Both in the Cologne and in the new Cool, this almond note has been significantly toned down, is no longer as present as in the EdT, EdP, or Intense, and thus no longer has a real gourmand character. There are also parallels in the subtly recognizable cologne components in both fragrances (neroli, orange, bergamot), which provide an underlying freshness that is desperately sought in the EdT, EdP, and Intense. The clear distinction between the two lighter fragrances in the line (Cologne and Cool) is made by the respective top note, which extends deep into the heart note of the fragrance and mixes there with the subtly present almond note: mint and a (thankfully) very subdued aquatic note in the Cool, grapefruit in the Cologne.

One could say that now there is an L'Homme Ideal for almost every taste. For lovers of food remnants in fragrances, there are the EdT, EdP, and Intense (in varying intensities), for lovers of lighter, cologne-like variants, there are the Cologne and Cool. It would be a shame, however, if the Cologne were permanently removed from the program in favor of the Cool. For me, the Cologne remains the clearly best and perhaps only outstanding variant.

So where does the Cool stand in the context of the Guerlain portfolio? I see its justification as a bridge between EdT and Cologne and could also imagine that it is a real alternative for those looking for a summer fragrance without a dominance of hesperidic notes. Mint is often the only truly fresh alternative - and here it is better executed than in almost all other fragrances I know in this style. For me, Cool is a truly successful fragrance that I could well imagine in my collection, but I would never permanently prefer it over the Cologne.

The Ideal Mint?
In search of my perfect mint fragrance, I also came across this "cool" one here, which was supposed to replace the widely popular L'Homme Idéal Cologne from the L'Homme Ideal line. I can't really understand why Guerlain made this move, as I really like the Cologne, but evidently, it was due to poor sales figures.

I tested many colleagues, such as Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca or "Love the way you Taste | Kilian," to name just a couple of examples. Both are also great fragrances where the mint was very authentically represented, but in the end, I always faced the same problem: the more realistic and straightforward the mint was conceived, the more boring I found the wearing experience of the fragrance. I have come to the conclusion that while it is exciting and refreshing to have that note in a perfume, I simply do not want to wear it. Do you know this feeling? You find a fragrance super exciting, but ultimately, it is just not really practical as a perfume.

This is exactly where L'Homme Idéal Cool comes into play, as the mint here is packaged in such a way that it provides a refreshing coolness, yet is not staged as authentically as in the other fragrances I tested. This may be a negative argument for some, keyword synthetic, but for me, it works very well here!

Alongside the well-known neroli-almond that we already found in "L'Homme Idéal Cologne | Guerlain," there is a citrusy mint that adds a zesty, almost lemonade-like, slightly sweet touch to the overall picture, without coming across as kitschy or overly synthetic. The DNA of the Ideal line, particularly the Cologne, is thus noticeably continued here.

This green freshness is rounded off by a vetiver waving from afar; I explicitly do not want to perceive Ambroxan here. H/S are not particularly strong, 5-6 hours on the skin, longer on textiles, but completely okay for me.

I am going to stick my neck out a bit and claim that this fragrance is a hybrid of L'Homme Idéal Cologne and "Guerlain Homme (Eau de Parfum) | Guerlain," with the influence of the latter being noticeably less, but in my opinion, still present.

So, if you are looking for a green and modern-wearable mint fragrance and do not expect a realistic depiction of that component, you should definitely give this one a try. For me, "Cool" is a real insider tip that completely gets overlooked in the L'Homme Ideal line.

I don't like the opening, it smells like a strange mouthwash, due to the mint and the aniseed. After a while, it get better, smoother/cooler

Powdery mint, then aquatic with a weird syrupy sweetness, then a sweet minty orange. Odd. Guerlain Homme EDP better mint from same house.

The idea: Mint fresh-cheeky meets almond dessert sweet. Unfortunately, so much Ambroxan that my ideal man gets an allergy. Bye fragrance!
