Royal Extract carries a big name. When Harrods designates something as a flagship, the house raises a certain claim to this product, and then it’s royal? Guerlain has supplied noble houses and kings in the past (just like the somewhat unjustly forgotten company Floris) and still offers, despite some naysayers and a few mainstream flops, new potential world-class fragrances time and again, not least Ne m'oubliez pas.
Royal Extract is one of the now numerous re-releases of Guet-Apens, Attrape Coeur, and Vol de Nuit Evasion. Why these constant reissues? Perhaps Guerlain thinks, we’ll release it in small quantities as a secret tip until the general public finally recognizes the potential of this creation....
Or maybe they want to maintain exclusivity, who knows.
In any case, it wasn't love at first sight for me, as I smelled the predecessors when they were on the market, and they didn’t touch me. But the aforementioned Ne m'oubliez pas has, so to speak, cleared my nose for the scent that is now called Royal Extract, even though they don’t have much in common.
Royal Extract has a classic chypre top note, which would have negatively influenced me in the past, being "lady, old school, safe, familiar." But the top note is just the entry point, and for some of my favorites, it’s even less pleasant. The true beauty is only revealed after some time: A spicy, leathery peach note, underlaid by millions of delicate flowers. (Mitsouko waves over briefly. Parure blinks somewhat skeptically and scurries past. Both wonder if they are related to RE, at least distantly...)
Balsamic wood notes form the background of this noble little water, yet it remains floral - even after the peach has rolled away.
Soft leather and creamy wood are the scent impressions that I can detect after 7 hours. A heart and a crown for this little work of art!
