A Vintage Grand Cru Perfume
This is a very well done, thoughtful and brave creation from Guerlain. It really showcases the expertise of Guerlain's perfumers and I feel that they went to more of an experimental rather than a commercially crowd pleasing round. I did not expect it to be this refined and unique but at the same time very classic and vintage-esque. It's a perfect form of “Past meets Present”.

Now let's talk about how it smells like! The opening is very energetic and lively with a huge burst of Bergamot and bitter Almond which gives off a raw plum, apricot and almost Cherry like sensation. I was so certain that Cherry was one of the notes here but it’s the Bitter Almond that tricked my nose.

As the joyful concoction settles, a rich and mood enhancing Tonka Bean Absolute blooms up and conquers the whole show with its multifaceted nature. The Bitter Almond from the opening forms a bridge to a freshly-toasted almond-y facet of Tonka which mingles with the density of warm spicy and sweet Pipe Tobacco-ish feel. The delicate powdery floral heart of bright Rose, Jasmine and buttery Iris dazzles around the Tonka core. It's a very powdery, creamy, warm and indulgent blend which is very distinctive to the original Shalimar.

The Madagascarian Vanilla tincture, also used in Millésime Vanilla Planifolia, becomes more prominent in later stages bringing the deep, rich and golden-brown Ambery feel to the base. There’s a noticeable amount of leathery facet coming from the vanilla which is also to be found in the original Shalimar. To me, it’s more of a leathery-suede feel with a brown accent. The unlisted Musk is quite modest compared to the original which adds a sensual edge to the composition.

All in all, It’s an update on a very classical Shalimar that stays faithful to its origin. Therefore, don’t expect this to be overly innovative or new as it’s after all an interpretation of 101 years old creation. What it does is elevating the feel of Tonka Bean in original form, rounding out the edges and modernising it to fit the current demographic. I think it’s a great gesture to compose a scent that both looks back in time and forward to the future at the same time.

The performance is truly extraordinary. It has a dense intensity that doesn’t overwhelm by any means. It forms a cloud that is soft but thick in texture like a cotton candy. It lasts me easily 7-9 hours which is no surprise based on the notes and expertise of Guerlain.

Tonka? Maybe. Still gorgeous? Absolutley.
Out of all of the Shalimar Millesime flankers, this one is hands down my favorite. Although I wouldn't exactly pin this as a super tonka-forward fragrance, it's still amazing in its own right. The opening of this one is quite powdery, with a touch of gourmand sweetness. The almond notes, iris and maybe just a dash of tonka are present from the get go. As it dries, the Shalimar DNA becomes more present, with that signature Guerlain vanilla being quite forward, and a handful of resinous spice notes occupying the background. This Millesime flanker most certainly has the most character out of them all, while still having a good bit of the Shalimar DNA buried deep down. It's a beautiful take on the classic DNA. I can see this one being more popular in current times due to the gourmand touch that this has in the first stages of the wear, but even without that this is an absolutely gorgeous fragrance. It's also worth noting that this fragrance really shows it's beauty on skin, almost even more so than when it's worn on fabric!

I'm quite sad this one was limited time, as I would most certainly wear this way more often if it was easier (and cheaper) to get ahold of. This is pure excellence in a bottle, and one of the best powdery-sweet fragrances made in the last couple of years. Hopefully Guerlain will bring it back at some point, but in the meantime I will cherish my bottle as much as possible!

No tonka for me, but still lovely
I expected this to be a gourmandish tonka-almond version of Shalimar, but that's not what I get.
Instead it's very leathery, especially at first. Bergamot is also noticeable right from the start, but that's always the case with Shalimar. Then the florals come in. The blend of rose, iris and jasmine give it a creamy to powdery, clean and comforting floral heart. Perhaps the almond and tonka add to the creaminess, but they never take center stage.
There is a warm, ambery base, too, but I find this much less vanillic and balsamic than the original and most other Shalimar flankers. It's a powdery leather version that leans fresher and cleaner than most Shalimars.

A very classic, elegant scent that is different enough from the rest of the line to purchase it if you already have some of them and absolutely worth a try if you can't wear the original for some reason.

It's not quite fitting for me personally, but I like it a lot. I just don't see why Guerlain marketed as a tonka fragrance, as tonka is rather subdued here. Or maybe I just perceive it differently, even though I usually have no problems detecting tonka or almond notes. I do not find this similar to Tonka Imperiale or Dior Fève Délicieuse at all, those are much sweeter.

Kammanommagucken - Hasta la vista, Shalimar !
A perfume is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get. Then there was an offer I couldn't refuse. And since only a fool does foolish things, I had no watermelon to carry and didn't want to call home, I shopped here, even though my name isn't Lohse! You want to hear the truth? You can surely handle the truth? That's my plan, mighty powerful!

It's not about how long you wait, but about who you wait for. So I stayed patient and passed the time until the arrival of the bottle. I only had one drink, vodka martini, shaken, not stirred. I had no déjà-vus, I specifically asked in the kitchen. While doing so, I looked into your eyes, little one. At some point, possibly never, I will ask you to do me a small favor. Until then, don't say anything against masturbation. It's sex with someone you really like.

The perfume is here. The name is Shalimar, Tonka Shalimar. Not mind-wiped, I was the king of the world. Hasta la vista, Shalimar! Yippie-Ya-Yay, Tonka madness! May the night be with you.

Shortly after the first spray, the fresh-fruity bergamot immediately fights, but in vain, for its survival, as the bitter almond takes over the direction. Marzipan-like, powdery, and slightly bitter, the brief sprightliness comes to an end, and the little flowers have no chance to unfold in the foreground. Suddenly it goes pop and pop and faster and faster pop. The main character, there can only be one, appears on the scent stage. And since we're already in the cinema, the image fits. Like popcorn, the tonka beans burst in the blend of the fragrance, first one by one and then more and more at the same time, spreading their wonderful, aromatic potential in the perfume. Powerful, warm, dark, and with a hint of smoke, the scent caresses the soul. As a reward for the brain, there’s also bitter dark chocolate, and as a warning, the eerie allure of engaging in something dangerous, because the perception of a bitter, dull-spicy base note remains subtly present, making the toxicity of the, of course, non-existent tonka coumarin and the almondy cyanide apparent. Shalimar Millésime Tonka is already, before the finale begins, a mysterious, enveloping, and enchanting caresser with rich, creamy tonka aroma.

With the lush, spicy vanilla, which as a topping makes the scent of our popped tonka beans even more attractive and seductive, the namesake Shalimar makes a comeback. The fascinating interplay of both notes brings even more depth, warmth, and coziness, as well as a very moderate, harmonious sweetness, accompanied by dense but gentle, smoky nuances. I believe this is the beginning of a wonderful friendship.

Shalimar Millésime Tonka is an opulent, aromatic tonka bean scent and despite its name similarity with Shalimar, it is an independent perfume. Thanks to the distinct masculine facets in this self-sufficient composition, both men and women enjoy the wearing role. Floating on the vanilla tonka cloud is easily noticeable at arm's length, never unpleasant, and has the power for a whole workday, or, even better, for a long, passionate evening, true to the motto, you can't just fumble around, you have to preheat the oven before you put the turkey in. Well, what one does for love.

How's the competition doing? Cough - we have a problem. Guerlain? Throws the purchases to the ground. Well, well, well, cry softly Chanel. I am dissatisfied with the overall situation! Everything that has a beginning has an end! I want exactly what she had!

If you were waiting for the right moment - that was it. I still recommend buying and remember, stores are not nice to people, stores are only nice to credit cards. And to be popular, you have to be nice; every day. To be hated, you don't have to do anything at all. Oh, and if we don't see each other again, good day, good evening, and good night!

Thank you!

The Royal Bean
It is said that L'heure bleue was the preferred scent of your recently deceased Majesty, the Queen of England, but Shalimar is fondly referred to as "The Queen of Perfumes." I can understand why, as it ranks high in the favor of buyers worldwide and is often placed on the same level of popularity as Chanel No. 5, which also almost flies off the shelves minute by minute. However, the two are quite different, not only in appearance, despite being only a few years apart in age. What Chanel No. 5 lacks is dozens of flankers. No. 5 has also changed its appearance only slightly since its inception, while Shalimar has undergone many transformations. Speaking of flankers: Last year saw a reissue of the quite successful 3-part series of Shalimar variations, which at the time were grouped under the name "Ode à la Vanille," but this time they were marketed from the outset as a limited annual fragrance. In 2021, Shalimar Millesime Vanilla Plantifolia briefly saw the light of day; it hit like a bomb and rightly flew off the shelves. Now I have tested the Shalimar Millesime version 2022, which celebrates the tonka bean, and which I, as an old tonka fan, naturally want to like even more:
Indeed, it is a very strong version of Shalimar, and for 50 ml of EdP, you only pay between 107 and 118 euros, which is quite a bargain for this quality, and it will also fly off the shelves, perhaps even more than last year's limited edition, which featured vanilla as the standout note. Vanilla is still present, but it is more mature. The scent begins with an almost tar-like tonka note, darker than that in Tonka Imperiale. I find it borders on smoky-leathery, after a while even not far from my favorite smoke, Fumerie Turque by Serge Lutens (vintage!), with almond undertones and a crisp sweetness found in Guerlain's wedding fragrances, which are much more expensive. But - don’t forget! - it is still a Shalimar. It takes a while to smell the familiar base. It has an Ode a la Vanille touch here, which I must admit I always found more pleasant than standard Shali. Add a bit of Tonka Imperiale (minus the amaretto note) and a bit of incense, and there you have the new potential bestseller.
Longevity and sillage are, of course, good.
Fine stuff.

The original DNA is present but very discreet. This version is drier, an almondy tonka bean and powdery iris, wrapped in a soft vanilla.

My favourite flanker tested so far. I smell bitter almond more than tonka, but that only makes it better. Great combi with the Shali DNA.

I was hoping for a smoother Tonka forward shalimar but it’s not. Quite strong and rough and redundant if you own shalimar.
