a sticky, gilded Versailles meets Jersey Shore dumpster fire of a fragrance (and I like it)
I will first note that I don't care for the original Shalimar (or at least the Shalimar I have smelled, which I am aware is not the original-original.) So I would just prefer to think of Millésime Iris as its own thing. At first sniff, this is a real bombastic towering vanilla powdered wig spectacle of a Sofia Coppola Marie Antoinette confection, but there’s something kind of tacky and trashy about it too, like it’s all that “ Let them eat cake” audacious opulence filmed through a mob-wife leopard print suede purse Instagram filter of a reality tv show, thick with manufactured drama and the desperate thirst. It’s a sort of sticky, gilded Versailles meets Jersey Shore dumpster fire of a fragrance. And believe it or not, initially, when I was testing it…I didn’t hate it. Later in the evening, I smelled a smoky vanilla floral phantom masterclass of luxury and beauty wafting from my sweater cuff, and I nearly swooned. DEAR GOD WHAT IS SO INTOXICATING, I thought. Surprise! It was that tabloid headline trending hashtag of a vanilla from earlier in the day! Millésime Iris, you contain multitudes, and I am here for all of them.

Shali DNA plus Prada Candy, and a bit of iris sprinkled on top
I didn’t expect for it to arrive so soon! The US website said “online preview”, so I assumed I was placing a pre-order on Wednesday. But today, on Saturday, it showed up on my doorstep!

I had a chance to wear it for a day. It has Shali DNA with a bunch of caramel and a bit of iris mixed in. The iris is pronounced in the top notes but with time, caramel takes its place. It’s a mix of Shalimar and Prada Candy to my nose. I also own Parfum Initial, but that one is more acidic and fresher. Millesime Iris is warmer and closer to the classic.

Very beautiful, but not my style.
To be honest, I’m not and never was the biggest fan of the Shalimar line (don’t come for me). They’re all a bit too vintage, and not in the best way. I tend to like vintage florals, not really sweet ambers and animalics. They end up smelling very dirty on my skin and the Shalimars are no exception. However, Millesime Iris is a gorgeous take on the original Shalimar with orris root as the lead actress (or so I thought)…

Although the orris is prominent, the caramel note in this is pretty intense and sitting right next to the caramel, is vanilla. Together, they make the scent sweeter than expected, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but could be annoying for someone who is looking for an iris bomb with this. It’s floral gourmand that leans slightly more gourmand. Although, I love the bright bergamot in the opening. Millesime Iris is a well composed scent that pays homage to the original in a very classy and gentle way.

While I think the fragrance is absolutely gorgeous, I don’t think the scent itself is for me/fits my aesthetic (I’m not crazy about powdery frags) and I don’t know how much I’m actually going to reach for it. The longevity and sillage are moderate.

Like one of "Goldberg Variations"
Wenn somebody here judged "Shalimar Milléssime Iris" as an unsuccessful attempt of "Shalimar" I thought immediately: Oh, not at all, that is a variation over Shalimar. And in my mind, my inner ears I heard the "Goldberg Variations" (J. S. Bach, BWV 988), in my inner eye I watchet the movies with Glenn Gould, playing the "Goldberg Variations" playing piano in his peculiar kind of moving, humming sometimes the melody, touching the keys short, staccato or longer while listening every fading tone.
While I'm writing this I listen from YouTube the 20 variations of the "Goldberg Variations", it's so touching and a good inspiration...
Almost every perfume has a course, has various phases .
If a perfume or a serie e.g. "Jardins of..." is, created in different variations over the first successful edition, it is possible that it is not only a plain copy but an interesting new variation over the idea or theme. Like the Jardin-Serie of Jean-Claude Elléna for instance.
So I perceive the different "Shalimars" which are always have the "bordun" or "ostinato", something more or less typically persevering over the the prototype of Shalimar.
Of course not every variations might be loved or liked by everyone. A lot might be disappointed.
That is not at all a sacrilege!
We should be responsible and keeping calm while judging.
"Shalimar Milléssime Iris" ist sweet, no doubts. But I perceive at first a brief time orris-violette and smoky vanilla,
Then for my opinion there must be something enchanting-mysterious I cannot identify. That is my impression and feeling during a long time.
After a while "Shalimar Milléssime Iris" is increasing and sweeter almost a gourmand, yet a little bit pungent. But still there is the smoky vanilla which tames it. It's still Shalimar but sweeter.
Following then "Shalimar Milléssime Iris" slowly starts fading away. I perceive a more and more dainty musky rose-scent, and flowery soft orris with a faint poudry whiff. And there is staying still like a now silent but still presently "Guerlinade" with vanilla. The Guerlinade then ist no longer percolating but a slowly "decrescending fundamental" tone".
And for me there is again the miracle sensation I cannot describe.
The longevity on my skin sustains 14 hours.
I have one note I miss anyhow; the wonderful bergamot, which is unusual in every "Shalimar" I had under my nose and which I own. That is my reason for rating only 8 points.
"Shalimar Milléssime Iris" ist not an easy to seizing nor to describing scent.
But though I love it. I am excited of the next Shalimar-Variation.

SIMPLE VANILLA... MEH!
This is a great, simple vanillic iris fragrance. It showcases the rooty, leathery, bitter, crystalline iris with vegetal undertones. I also detect something oily and buttery, like a sesame seed smell.

It is slightly powdery, and the Shalimar DNA is muted. The citrus notes are prominent in the opening. The drydown is just musky, watery vanilla. The fragrance is not gourmand / edible; it's clean and sweet.

Performance is not amazing, maybe it needs to macerate and mature.

I'm somewhat disappointed. I guess I expected more. Millesime Tonka was fantastic; it could rival the vintage extraits that I adore.

It's very wearable, an everyday type of scent. Not special enough for the limited edition hype and the price.

Not my favorite Shalimar flanker.

Bummer! I love Shalimar and iris/orris notes. This scent is underwhelming, for me...

This wears like a caring hug on your skin!
Such a creamy Guerlain vanilla with floral hints. One of the best versions of Shalimar imo

Blind buy with no regrets - delicious, light vanilla iris well rounded out by the caramel and Shalimar core. Not too powdery or sweet.

The first few seconds reveal Guerlain's familiar soft vanilla, which then blends with powdery, leathery iris. Present, but not overpowering.

Not so much left from Shalimar but delicious caramel vanilla. Iris only in the opening. Cozy and sweet, not unique but the great quality.

A "cute" version of Shalimar that I find to be more wearable than the original.

Gorgeous! It's like a cross between Shalimar Cologne & Lancome Iris Dragees. The Orris butter absolutely does shine and I love it to pieces.

Iris dominant Guerlainade with the silky vanilla base - with hits of gourmand but not overly sweet, an easy start for Shalimar collection
