It would smell like this in India...
I have never been to India either, but looking at the factories that pump all their waste into the waters, the mountains of garbage in the cities, and the enormous pollution in this country, where even the locals can hardly breathe freely in some places because the air is so contaminated, I really wouldn't want to smell a fragrance that captures olfactory images of this country.
Of course, The Maj is supposed to show only the romantic sides; to intertwine traditional Indian attars, to create beautiful images. At the opening, I immediately thought "OH, I'm at Lush." That's exactly how it smells in a Lush store. The many scents, the soaps, creams, etc... everything organic... somehow there's a typical smell in those shops. It's somewhat herbaceous and fresh, but also quite hippie-like. More like the modern vegan hippie. Then a grand sandalwood note comes in, and now it smells more like some esoteric shops or small stores that do piercings, sell all kinds of stoner accessories, and always have incense sticks burning. Nag Champa yellow comes to mind, which I have enjoyed smelling in such a context.
The Maj does it better, thanks mainly to the noble sandalwood note. The sandalwood here feels incredibly authentic, soft, and elegant. The Maj definitely has one of the most prominent and beautiful sandalwood notes I have ever smelled in a fragrance.
However, I find that it doesn't really smell expensive overall, because I associate it more with small, alternative little shops rather than the big wide world. It's a pleasant smell, it also smells somewhat exotic, but if I smelled it on someone, I would rather assume it was some nice fragrance oil from such a shop; but not a scent for which you have to shell out 250 dollars for 60ml.
