Fragonard again? Yes, there are indeed some treasures...
Many Fragonards from recent years are somehow "you get what you pay for." Not really good, not really bad, you’ve smelled it all before, often too sticky-fruity-sweet for my taste. Or the longevity is just terrible, pardon, je m'excuse: pauvre.
Nevertheless, every now and then there are a few treasures to discover. "Encens Feve Tonka" is one of them for me. I wear it when I feel like a bold, dark-spicy hit, because this is not a subtle fragrance. Sillage: It's there, perhaps not quite so that everything within a 20-meter radius that isn’t already dead would just fall over, but enough that I wouldn’t want to wear it to the office.
At the beginning: Mountains of bergamot, a wonderful perfumed moderated freshness, the clove is almost present from the start, mandarin adds a citrus-fruity accent and the pepper a nice sharpness. It's fresh and really a bit woody, yes, and I might even suspect lavender. In any case, it’s a Tatatataaaaaa opening that doesn’t need to hide.
Then it becomes a bit softer and maybe - just maybe - a tiny bit more bitter, the bergamot disappears quite quickly, the pepper unfortunately as well, but the clove has made itself comfortable now, it doesn’t want to leave anytime soon. The fragrance also darkens a little, no, it doesn’t become pitch black, but the finely balanced freshness of the opening is gone. And the rose and jasmine? They are there and yet not, because there is something floral, but far in the background. Overall, it’s simply a spicy heart note that also becomes increasingly smoky, the incense and the cozy roundness of the tonka bean reveal themselves relatively quickly, without the heart note giving way immediately. There’s also a delicate powderiness somehow, in short: it’s rounded and pleasant and darkly colorful and will never be too sweet for me, even though there’s also vanilla in the slightly woody base.
For me, it’s clearly a fragrance for both women and men, with an amusing little contradiction: On men, I would describe it as a solid, not directly old-fashioned, but rather more traditional scent. On women, the juice smells in these times when you can’t avoid "La vie est belle" or "Opium noir" anywhere, at any time of day, almost visionary.
