A Seductive Frankincense Perfume
"Olibanum" is another name for frankincense, and Keiko Mecheri OLIBAN is a seductive frankincense perfume. Not that there was any need to go out on a fact-finding mission to be able to report that incense is by far the central note of OLIBAN...

Tobacco and rose mingle playfully with the deep amber smokiness, but this perfume is mostly about incense embellished. Upon application, I thought that this was going to be one of a handful of pretty good incense compositions (two of which I already own). However, OLIBAN becomes deeper and more ambery as it dries down, offering a much more sensual and addictive elixir in the end.

Oriental lovers should definitely give OLIBAN a big sniff! This is my favorite so far of the Keiko Mecheri collection, the perfumes of which I'm finding use notes of extremely high quality. It is also quite clear that this house (unlike some unnamed niche houses...) takes sillage and longevity seriously--as well they should! I heartily recommend OLIBAN to men and women alike for wintertime wear.

Where has the smoke gone?
Oliban was a blind purchase that I made based on the fragrance notes listed. It seemed to fit in well with my preference. Or so I thought. However, my nose discovered that this was not the case.

Where do I start? With the bottle. It is a real feast for the eyes, with its elegant dark, almost black brown color and edges that are reminiscent of the crystalline structure of a precious stone. Of course, the bottle is not cut, but pressed glass. After all, it should remain affordable. However, this does not diminish the overall impression of beauty.
With great anticipation and the beautiful bottle in my hand, I was expecting a smoky, perhaps a little sweet, but also woody incense fragrance. After all, the perfume is called Oliban. Tobacco and rosewood are in the fragrance description, along with tonka and amber. Sounds good, doesn't it? One spray and wow ... utter disappointment. What is that?

Soapy rose blends unpleasantly with a hint of far too fresh white incense. That's it. I'm shaking. This can't be true. Where has the smoke gone?
Incidentally, I can't detect any remarkable fragrance progression either. At first, I have soapy rose mixed with fresh white incense. Incidentally, this is the slightly citrusy note that blends into the rose soap. Tobacco? Not a trace. Anything sweet? Not here. As the fragrance progresses, the rose recedes and only the soap remains.

This fragrance leaves me at a loss. The beautiful bottle doesn't help either. Is it my skin or my nose? I have no idea. In any case, I need to recover from this unpleasant fragrance experience and treat my nose to a dose of Bois d'Ascèse or Cardinal.
