Dark nostalgia
Just when I thought patchouli scents couldn’t surprise me that much anymore... now this is a peculiar, interesting and fascinating one. It opens with a musky, dusty, grayish mood, a pleasant sort of mint-balmy touch and a base which comprises nutty-spicy notes of tonka, then (I guess) vetiver, benzoin, and leather. I must say I disagree a bit with other reviews: I barely get the patchouli note initially, which in my opinion is quite well concealed among the abovementioned notes, to the point I had to “look” for it. What I get overall is a really intriguing, sophisticated, kind of decadent and fairly complex mixture that evokes to my imagination modest, dusty abandoned rooms, mostly for a really peculiar note or accord that makes me think of bitter leaves and grass grasping the walls and growing out from cracks on concrete soil. This note, which may likely be carnation, is really sharp, bitter, sour, dark-greenish, slightly salty-metallic, and gives a really vibrant, fascinating and memorable gloomy touch to the scent. Overall as I said Patchouli Bohème smells for a while more tending towards greenish-camphorous-woody territories of tonka, leather, woody balm, musk, with just a “raw shade” of patchouli; which however emerges soon, bringing the fragrance to a more conventional patchouli-centered blend, still with a peculiar and charming feel of chypre-sque nostalgia – pretty much like in Intrigant Patchouli by Parfumerie Générale, that in my opinion plays more or less the same “chords” around patchouli. Not saying they’re identical or much similar though, as Bohème is decidedly more tobacco-leathery, and also more balmy-nutty. The drydown is perfectly great as well: utterly refined, dark, with the leather note slowly morphing into an everlasting kind of “roasted” feel (like in Cuir by Mona di Orio, no surprise the nose is the same). Basically the first work by LM Parfums I find decent and interesting – and one of the few good ones by Mona di Orio. Nice!

Waxy, smutty 'baby powder' patchouli with a geranium leaf sharpness
Immediately, this recalls the smeary aroma of the ladies’ communal changing room where my mother would bring me into as a little child to wait while she tried on clothes. The closed air swollen with the collective unsnapping of bras and unpeeling of pantyhose, the yeasty aroma of cooped-up underboob and flesh rolls suddenly released from their whalebone prisons, and the clouds of deodorizing talcum powders moistened by the day’s wear and tear.

At the center of all this is a balmy-greasy accord like clay or playdough spiked with the rosy-minty spikes of geranium leaf. There is an ungodly amount of tonka bean in this, its slightly roasted almond butter facet roughed up by an oily patchouli masquerading as a black leather jacket. Thanks to the strong role played by the tolu balsam, the texture of the perfume oscillates between sticky (turgid, airless, and ‘brown’) but and dusty (baby powder spliced with glints of metal). Tolu balsam is similar to benzoin (woody, vanillic, spicy) but deeper, waxier, and more medicinal, with a pronounced leathery or tobacco like effect. In Patchouly Bohème, it is as essential as the patchouli. This is a scent that catches me off guard every time I wear it, because I never anticipate the way its soft, balmy, nutty-powdery skin is just a front – a wee baby Shalimar – hiding this massively earthy, roasted leather. It is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Bohemian Rhapsody
Tom Ford Noir was sadly discontinued and I have been on the hunt for a patchouli in the realm of that acquaintance. This comes very close and I think I may enjoy it more. Patchouly Boheme is a dry and moderately resinous patchouli with powdery tendencies. I do miss the pepper and opoponax in Noir, but Laurent Mazzone makes up for that with the use of tobacco and tolu balsam. Tonka solos without vanilla here, so there isn't a tug of war between patchouli and underlying sweetness. The patchouli is allowed to breathe and be prominent. There is a flawless balance and that makes this very gratifying.

La Bohème on the Oil Rig
If I were a man, I would be a secret agent, a pickpocket, or a poker player. Maybe even a foreign legionnaire, a Wall Street broker, or a lonesome cowboy. Or even a machinist on an oil rig, somewhere out at sea. I would be tinkering with machines in the engine room, with an oil-stained cloth in my back pocket, rugged boots, a bare torso, packed with an awful lot of muscles. And I would most likely smell like Patchouli Bohème.

The opening of Patchouli Bohème is nasty, fierce, and oily. Slimy, pitch-black, dark, wicked, and mean. The scent crawls over my skin, settles into my pores, envelops and glues the fine hairs on my arm, living like a microscopic alien spider on me, clinging tight. What is it that immediately creates this oily, slimy, and pitch-black impression, this amorphous and viscous quality? Geranium leaves and woods? But please, soaked in tar. And with finely chopped screws, motor oil, frog legs, and spit added. I can only explain this explosively dark, oily top note by saying that the geranium leaves and woods, subtly smoky and sweetly accentuated, create a slightly camphoraceous scent impression in my nose that feels viscous, metallic, and very dark. I suspect that individual notes are already peeking through here, which will become more prominent later in the fragrance's development: the smoky, bitter tobacco and the sweetness of the resinous tolu balsam or tonka bean. The top note of Patchouli Bohème is absolutely fascinating in any case, and it immediately sparks the imagination: The guy on the oil rig, Brad Pitt in his first Levi's ad, the auto mechanic who absolutely should not talk but keep tinkering… This rather long-lasting top note is definitely sexed-up, as is the whole fragrance.

It also quickly becomes clear that the scent is a real statement. Patchouli Bohème is a clear word and a strong statement. This is not something you smell and wear every day. So who is this Laurent Mazzone, who creates such unusual and dark fragrances and collaborates with perfumer greats like Mona di Orio, Richard Ibanez, Jerome Epinette, or Olivia Giacobetti? Not much is known about him, except that he once worked in fashion and initially made scented candles before turning to perfume, although he has always been fascinated by scents. His website presents itself in a dark, gloomy black and red but also flash-animated and somewhat sparklingly playful manner, and the black bottles of his perfume line feature a simple, rather understated design. There isn't much more to learn about him, except perhaps that his fragrances are meant to represent a similar statement outwardly as fashion and accessories. A fragrance accessory to emphasize the extraordinary, the individual, the dark side of every personality.

Balsamic, slowly pulling and resinous, with a slight metallic twist, a smoky component, and a leathery, earthy warmth, Patchouli Bohème develops further. This unusual mélange has a civet-like quality, depending on whether the warm, leathery-earthy depth or the resinous-smoky sweetness is in the foreground, sometimes reminding one of Jicky, sometimes of Shalimar, and yes, also of Ciste 18 from Le Labo. After all the nasal fluttering and eyelash batting of the rather testosterone-heavy top note, Patchouli Bohème also clearly becomes unisex here. It gets sweeter, even more resinous, warmer, earthier. And it becomes bohemian, elegant. The guy from the oil rig suddenly wears a stylish suit, albeit still with a three-day beard, and at his side is a mysterious, dark-haired woman. Together, they are both unusual, and each draws attention. An exciting fragrance for an unusual night, the special moment, intimacy, and extroversion at the same time.

Patchouli Bohème is relatively unusual for a designated patchouli scent, as the patchouli for me is not immediately recognizable as the main player for quite a long stretch of the fragrance. Surprising for a perfume that even references its main component in its name, which then only represents a well-integrated secondary aspect in the actual scent impression. And even in the further development, while the patchouli is clearly recognizable, it is so closely intertwined with the resin, the slightly vanillic sweetness of the tonka bean, and the warmth of leather that Patchouli Bohème is anything but another patchouli bomb. Patchouli Bohème is rather a very well-lasting, clearly present unisex fragrance that, despite the somewhat challenging top note, follows a very harmonious scent progression and develops a sensual depth that is not often found. A great perfume, not necessarily for every day, but for special, somewhat extraordinary days and nights.

So I don’t have to be a man to tinker with machines in the engine room of an oil rig. With Patchouli Bohème, I can do that as a woman, even in an evening gown…

The Dose Makes the Poison
Besides my love for incense, I am also quickly captivated by patchouli.
However, my collecting passion is not awakened as quickly here as it is with the incense.

But after my first test of Patchouli Bohème, it was clear to me: I need to have this.

I have always had a penchant for expressive fragrances and I don't shy away from wearing them to work. Of course, I pay attention to the right dosage, because we all know, the dose makes the poison.

Anyone with a dislike for smoky, sweet, and earthy notes will not really connect with this creation, and patchouli purists will also not find much to enjoy here.

Patchouli Bohème starts with a very unusual head note that slightly resembles plastic. In contrast to Onlinehexchen, I find this opening very exciting and successful. A smoky undertone adds to the intrigue.

The head note lasts quite a long time before the fragrance gradually gains depth and sweetness.

The heart is dominated by patchouli, but the earthiness is softened mainly by the tobacco and leather.

The base note skillfully adds to the heart accord. Patchouli Bohème becomes even softer, more balsamic, and, in my opinion, a bit more chocolatey, yet without drifting into gourmand territory.

It will probably not surprise anyone when I say that both longevity and intensity are excellent. PB lasts on me easily for 24 hours, and even after a shower, the scent is still noticeable.

Anyone looking for an unusual patchouli fragrance should definitely give this creation a try; it could be worth it.

This feels boozy and sultry but acts with character and style. A dark, rich fragrance that is much more than the sum of its parts.

Starts out benzoin-like spiky; smoky leather and patch in the heart are quite good; rough-sweet tonka in the base makes it more pleasing.

You blissfully drown in an oil-chocolate lake. There are worse ways to die. Regular patchouli was yesterday. Very extreme scent. Great!

From the cellar to the kitchen. Musty, mineral, metallic, wood, stone & cool green. Then balsamic-amber: Crème brûlée. It's something.

Tumbling through the upholstery display. Yes, patch too. But only briefly. Then plastic wrap. In the background, turpentine. A candidate for washing.

The scents of the upholstery department in the furniture store and sweet plastic notes are stuck in my airways. This fragrance exhausts me quickly.

Not everyone's darling, but I find it a very bold and thus successful temptation. Smoked leather meets vanilla-patchouli.
