When Odysseus Sailed Through the Seas
When I spray Periplo on my skin, I am mentally transported far back to antiquity. It is incredibly warm, and the rocky cliffs along the coasts of Italy appear before my mind's eye. The sea is blue and calm, and a few ships can be seen in the distance. The Greek gods are still worshipped. It smells of herbs and citrus fruits, and the sea air carries the scents away... it may also be because I bought this very bottle in Italy on a warm day during my vacation... but perhaps this fragrance tells exactly that story. At least until midday...

Has she shaved, is she cold?
I enjoy wearing some men's fragrances; I have no issues wearing them. For example, I really like Grey Flannel, Aramis 900, Verde, Devin, Rosissimo, and Pour Monsieur, and I'm glad they are in my collection. But sometimes I sniff a men's fragrance and think: Oh, oh, THIS is explicitly a men's fragrance, you won't wear that. I don't know exactly why that is. It doesn't necessarily have to do with the harsh, cool, or non-floral scents. Usually, it's fragrances that I associate with aftershave, for whatever reason. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate the scent; I probably have concerns that the people around me might think I just shaved.

The same goes for Periplo; sprayed it on, sniffed it: men's fragrance, not for you, although I only perceive the aftershave note at the beginning. Periplo opens with a lightly citrusy sharpness, a bit of ginger I think, but that's not in there. Moderately fresh, many kitchen herbs, but not green, more brown like wood, non-floral, a lot of thyme, maybe something like camphor? Those are my notes from the first test. The second test goes the same way. Periplo is an herbal scent like Assenzio, but they have nothing in common. Assenzio develops warm, green, and aromatic-spicy, while Periplo remains rather woody, spiced with a lot of thyme, reminiscent of a balsamic herbal balm, helpful for rheumatism or colds. Not unpleasant or piercing, but do I want to smell like that? Are you cold or do you have a sore back? Those would be the questions and concerns of my fellow humans; no, that doesn't have to be.

The sillage is moderate, the longevity is in the middle range, the bottle is - like many L’Erbolarios - simple and handy, but the cap is hard to remove. Periplo is not tied to any season; I find it wearable year-round and more suitable for men. Mr. Pluto wants to test it too; maybe Periplo will smell completely different on him. Not a bad scent, but quite one-dimensional and not for me.

spicy - warm and fresh at the same time
the first association when I tested this scent was "old spice"
(I used to love that on someone a long time ago..). I find it spicy-warm and fresh at the same time. Strange that it should only be bay leaf and thyme...
but I can't really pick out anything specific.
(...I would love to have the nose of, for example, eternity...)
I find it quite unisex, so it's also suitable for women who
like it a bit herbal and spicy, it doesn't smell like aftershave!

Herb-citrusy air, delicate nuances of French brandy, thyme/juniper focus, plausibly coastal without drifting into aquatic…

Green Mediterranean herbs on dry wood, airy & fresh. A modern classic. More valuable than the drugstore price suggests. Fine!

Warm, spicy, fresh - not an "old man scent" and no "aftershave" feeling, but a unique creation, really delightful!

Smells mainly like the shaving foam of the same name. I detect something woody - pine? Quite okay for barbershop lovers.

After a fresh, clear opening, it turns salty and sultry. I can't help but think of the clean sweat of a well-groomed lady. Well.
