Coarse Sand, Rough Wood
Interesting coincidence: a few days ago, I encountered a not-so-young couple, where he created a meter-long sillage with a scent that struck me as fresh-spicy, but also rough, scratchy, synthetic, and rather cheap. I had wondered what fragrance that could be, whether it is available in regular perfumeries or drugstores or in supermarkets, and how one could willingly douse oneself with it or how his companion could tolerate it.
Yesterday, I was recommended a sample from my collection in the Parfumo Assistant for an autumn morning and, unbiased, I applied it right away.
In doing so, I immediately had this flashback to the aforementioned encounter. I can’t imagine that he was wearing Sandalwood by Truefitt & Hill, but the similarity is astonishing.
However, I was more surprised by the fact that I can’t associate any sandalwood with it. The entire pyramid can actually be thrown out the window. I only perceive a diffuse mixture of fresh-spicy-bitter nuances with synthetic support. Both under the name Sandalwood and under the label Truefitt & Hill, the oldest barbershop in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records, I had imagined a more traditional cologne with a classic expression. Above all, of higher quality.
Only at the very end in the drydown does "Sandalwood" become a bit softer and sweeter. And the path to that point was not easy, and I don’t see the destination as a reward, but rather as a minimal upward correction in the scoring. Sometimes I feel that I might be too generous, but here I find it really difficult.
At least "Sandalwood" wasn’t so dramatic that I had to wash it off, but I also had zero motivation to reapply it.
