Greeeeeeeeeeen. Green.
Remember Brut? Skin Bracer? Aqua Velva? - All green. All with a similar vintage fresh green vibe. In fact, if you look at most of the 80s freshies for men, many of them tend to share the same notes - lemon and clary sage in the top, basil or pine in the mid, oakmoss or vetiver in the base....you get the picture.

I used to wear Adidas Sport (aka Adidas Sport Field) in my youth and the overall feel of Lacoste is very similar. You get a very sharp blast of limey citrus up top, with a greenness in the background from the basil, geranium, oakmoss and vetiver. It's almost piney, but not quite. I don't really get any other florals, but as the scent wears on, the edges start to round off and you can tell that the greenness is held in place by a light sweetness, amber and cedar. There are no "aquatic notes" like in contemporary freshies, just a dense, and initially sharp blast of green. But I guess that's to be expected, being named after a famous tennis player. And yeah, it does sort of remind me of a dry, mossy tennis ball, or maybe a desert golf course - you know, as long as you're wearing a pristine white polo shirt and keepin' it casual - that's key.

To be perfectly candid, I actually bought this by mistake. My intention was to purchase Lacoste POUR HOMME, but I didn't know much about fragrances back then, and.....well.....you know. So you can imagine my surprise when I first sprayed it. I was like - "Whoa!" THAT'S not how I remember it." and, "hmmmm, I immediately feel older." Yeah, it smells dated - but CERTAINLY not bad. I enjoyed it so much that I took the entire bottle with me on vacation to Mexico and used up like 20% of the juice in 2 weeks. And in the middle of the jungle, in 100% humidity, this stuff is a green BEAST. It's definitely the sweet notes in the base that keep it going. I'll never forget climbing those pyramids thanks to this scent.

But yeah, when I got back, the memories were so strong that I had to pass the bottle on to my father - and it suits him perfectly. Because believe me, if you smelled this in a locker room, you'd expect someone over 40 to walk out of the showers. I wouldn't think twice if it were called Polo Green Eau Fraiche or something. Because boy is it ever - fresh. And green.

Finest fresh-green-spicy 80s-style fragrance
Unfortunately, this old-school Lacoste fragrance is hardly to be found in Germany's perfumeries anymore, which can still proudly showcase what "sporty" meant during the peak careers of David Hasselhoff and Tom Selleck.

In this respect, Schmörkes' objection regarding the concept of sport is justified, although one must consider that 35 years ago, "sporty" did not mean lounging on wellness mats and meticulously epilating oneself as a man. Keyword Hasselhoff: Chest hair had to peek out of the shirt, and a man did not want to smell like an androgynous room spray like "Ocean" after exercising (as is the case today).

Therefore, one can be grateful that this olfactory gem wonderfully reminds us of the faded cultural perceptions of sports and still makes a flawless impression stylistically.

In Paris, where I just tested it, it can be found everywhere at normal prices (48 €/50 ml), and the fragrance delights with a truly well-balanced mix of fresh, green, and spicy elements.

Alongside the invigorating lime and citrus notes, a finely spicy, mid-level green tone of basil and galbanum soon joins in. Sage contributes fine, slightly edgy spicy ideas, complexed by underlying floral nuances of clove, jasmine, and geranium.

Amber notes provide a soft and smooth base, which overall remains anchored in a green-mossy-grassy spectrum, while being quite accessible and rounded, and refreshingly maintains a pleasantly sweet-sour framework, thus staying sporty in the 80s sense.

The Freshness Bomb...
... and indeed the best sport fragrance ever, alongside "Boss Sport," created at a time when "sport" was not yet synonymous with a synthetic citrus overkill.

No other fragrance of mine gives me this feeling of freshness upon application (especially as an aftershave). Endless menthol in the top note (even though it is not listed in the fragrance pyramid). This then subtly recedes over time, gradually making way for warmer and herbaceous accords.

Not only suitable for sports, but also for more elegant occasions, with epic longevity, without being intrusive. I like to repeat myself: for me, many of the best fragrances of all time were composed from the beginning to the end of the 80s, of which unfortunately only a few have survived. However, this one is still available if you search the vastness of the web a bit.

Sport fragrance? What are you smoking...?
Lacoste - a brand that has always been synonymous with polo shirts and tennis bags in my life, can now settle as an old-school scent on my wrist. The crocodile is lounging...

This fragrance is once again a nice example of how different perceptions and impressions can be.
I associate it with everything, but not with sports.
Maybe I can still connect it to a player takeover for a contract signing; it is too spicy for me to harmonize with pure sports.

The old Lacoste is a really nice character, spicy with a fresh start; fortunately, this mentioned mint note doesn't last long for me, replaced by a green spice that surely carries the show home.

After 20 minutes, I am firmly convinced that I am wearing a robust, stylish spicy fragrance with a hint of old-school powderiness, suitable for shirts and suits, and that remains the case even over the considerable duration.

In terms of intensity, we are again a family here: Not overwhelming, Lacoste holds back nicely but never forgets that it wants to be noticed.

So, in conclusion, it is often the case here as well:
The actual target group of the supposedly stylish ignores the truly beautiful and worthy fragrances in favor of the advertised brands and the status they supposedly bring, and buys something from Boss again, as it is recognized in the friend circle.

I, on the other hand, even though I am not the target group, enjoy wrapping myself in the old Lacoste and buy nothing from Boss. :o), admired in my friend circle.

The decision, as always, is up to you....

Sure, even without style...

Icy Green
The brain can remember scents remarkably well. I haven't smelled this one in ages, but the moment I see the bottle, I start to shiver. Lacoste (original) had the charm of a menthol-soaked ice block, a top choice for summer. The fact that I bought it multiple times back then either speaks for Lacoste or suggests that summers were hotter back then. I even still had the original bottle without a sprayer and was completely appalled when they screwed that bulky vaporizer on top.

I like to repeat the description from above: Top note: citrus fruits, heart note: spicy notes, base note: sandalwood. It doesn't get much straighter than that. And the best part: This EdT comes from a time when sweeteners hadn't been invented yet :)

Green, mossy, sport frag of its day. Not very dated but not modern either. It is not special but more interesting than any new release

Textbook green fragrance: fizzy opening, smooth dry down, ideal for those who don't enjoy bitter, dirty or harsh green scents.

The citrus-lavender original from Lacoste that everyone should have smelled, preferably back in 1984 when it first hit the market. Awesome!

In the vintage version, unbeatable. Freshness, citrus, greens & herbs were dominant. Polo collar up and off we went. Timeless.

Those who wanted to be stylish back then wore Lacoste polo shirts with the matching Lacoste fragrance. It fits the era.
