Nice but doesn't last
Tried out my sample of this yesterday, and in general it's a really nice fragrance. Nothing out of the ordinary, a very safe and fresh citrus. Opening reminds me slightly of Montblanc Legend Spirit. However, not even two hours into this I couldn't smell it on my skin at all. Even holding my wrist right up to my nose there was nothing. Nice basic citrus fragrance but for me absolutely no longevity.

Essential Layering
My mum got me this the year it came out in 2005 and my friends and i all loved it. I was so disappointed when i got to my last spray of the bottle.

It has lovely floral green notes and i have not smelled anything else quite like it tbh. If there is something similar or a clone i would love to try it because what lets this scent down is that even though in the description from Lacoste which tells us about their technology of long lasting release, this is far from true. It really doesn't last long or project well at all. I really wish they would make a stronger version of this because i think it would do well.

There is an Essential Sport but i don't know how similar or if they are at all. I remember a reviewer saying they were not alike so I didn’t buy it.

Either way if you are willing to overspray then this is great for summer!

Now as for layering. If you own Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Eau Intense or Versace Man Eau Fraiche this is a wonderful choice for a few different combinations . You can go ahead and spray all three on your skin at the same time and end up with what was a poor performance being something very strong.

You can do this in a few different ways. If you are not in to strong fragrances just go with the Versace Man Eau Fraîche Eau de Toilette then spray Essential on top. No need to wait for either to settle, spray away one after the other.

If like me you do like it strong then start with the Light Blue pour Homme Eau Intense first, Versace Man Eau Fraîche Eau de Toilette 2nd and then Essential on top with a good few extra sprays and instead of the strong marine scent some people don’t like about Light Blue Eau Intense there is no need to worry, because with this layering it is actually pushed aside by the smell of Essential.

A lot of people feel this way when they first get Light Blue Eau Intense and go looking for something to layer it with and in doing so realise it is one of the best scents for layering with other fresh fragrances. So you could miss out Versace Man Eau Fraîche Eau de Toilette and just spray Essential on top of Light Blue Eau Intense to give the edge off. Just remember to give Essential a few extra sprays.

Personally I really enjoy Essential on its own so I am happy to wear it either by itself by over spraying or with one of the layering combinations mentioned above.

I think this would be great for going to the gym which I am planning on doing this year and since the local gym is a small one I think there are times when weaker fragrances have a place in my collection. For my local gym I think Essential on its own or layered with Versace Man Eau Fraîche Eau de Toilette which is another pretty weak fragrance will be a great choice. As for the days where I want strong projection I will be going for the triple strength combination. I also have Aqua De Gio on order which I have heard is a great layering fragrance so those of you who own it could give that a try. I would love to hear your results either here in the replies or on the forum where there is a topic about people’s favourite layering. I hope to hear from you either way.

The one thing that I miss from the original is the metal cap on the bottle. I don’t mind the packaging change but the metal cap being swapped for a plastic one is a letdown imo. Other than that I actually love the crocodile on the back of the bottle. It actually looks really cool. It would look even better if they brought back the metal cap but I don’t think we will see that happening any time soon. This was maybe a well known fragrance in 2005 but I don’t see many people taking about it now in 2023 but if you are looking for something nice for the gym give it a go. Same if you’re looking for something to layer Light Blue Eau intense. This may save that fragrance for you if you find the marine scent too strong.

The one that got me started into the fragrance world
Before I get started, I want to mention a few things:

1. I have 6 months of experience with the fragrance world by the time I'm writing this review
2. I don't have the best nose for picking individual notes and I have a hard time picking notes that I’m not that familiar with
3. The bottle that I have it's pretty old. What I'm about to write is my experience with this old bottle, so please take this review with a big grain of salt
4. I will do a redux in the future with a new one fresh out of the box.

Context

This is the fragrance that was also given to me by my older sister. She gave me this one, a few from Instituto Espanol and a bootleg of JPG Le Male Le Parfum This is the fragrance that I started back 6 months ago to regularly wear. I will have the full story in the next review.

The Scent (Accords and Notes)

This is a fruity, fresh and green fragrance. From the spray to the drydown the blackcurrant, for me, it persists for the entire duration of wear. Maybe it’s blackcurrant with tangerine, I’m not that sure. At the start I’m picking the tomato leaves but just a bit and in the drydown only the rose and from the base notes the sandalwood and the patchouli. So, what I’m getting from the whole scent profile is a solid fun fruity scent profile that doesn't lose its core.

The Projection

Because this is an older bottle for me it’s just at an intimate level, but I’m sure that a new one would have a moderate sillage and projection.

The Longevity

It's about 2 hours from my experience, and this one it’s indifferent to the heat. I tested it in high and low and my results are the same.

The Bottle

The one that I have is a 125 ml, which it’s a pretty chunky one. It’s pretty heavy and uncomfortable, even if I try to have a grip from the bulk, still I have problems with that. Luckily there are falcons for 40 and 75 ml, so that it could be more easy to pick up and spray. The atomizer it’s a bit cheap but it sprays decently.

The Perfumer

The nose behind this fragrance is Laurent Bruyère. He was an french perfumer, self thought and who was working for Mane and IFF, and also had Dominique Ropion as a mentor. He made fragrances for Tierry Mugler and Cacharel, but sadly passed away in 2008.

Conclusions

This is a fun fruity fresh fragrance that is part of Lauren’s legacy and one of his results from his own skills and experience. I think that this fragrance is solid but my old bottle it’s not in a good condition, so for now I’ll have to also rate the projection and longevity. With all of that it's a decent fragrance. But in the future I will do a redux.

Thank you so much for reading my review. This is one that I regularly used in my last semester in my college and I had a decent experience with it. I will share the other ones in the future. I’m really excited to talk about the niche ones that I have. Next, I will write about Ivolution by Institudo Espanol, a company that makes beauty products, including fragrances and little information it’s available in general.

Smells worse than that
I got this fragrance a few years ago for Christmas and used it regularly and at any time of the year. At that time my interest in fragrances was not as strong as it is now. I didn't worry about fragrances, the right season or anything. I would probably also have been someone who, if he had bought perfume himself, would have been taken in by the usual head note blenders and would have plunged my savings into them - you were still a student. That's why I always found it quite comfortable when my grandparents gave me a fragrance for Christmas or my birthday, and this fragrance from Lacoste has shown me that such a gift process does not always have to be a total flop. It really doesn't have the most exciting fragrance, an outstanding durability and it doesn't smell extraordinary either.

The beginning is very invigorating and bright. The bergamot cannot be smelled. Particularly with the top note, it is more than just complicated, at least in this case, to smell out the individual components. As already mentioned, I notice the bergamot, but at the same time I notice that there are other components in the game which are mentioned in the product description, but which I would not have blindly sniffed. Let's agree that we have a start dominated by the bergamot, which is already green. This prelude lasts only a few minutes, because now comes the rose, a component of the heart note, which is supposed to be accompanied by black pepper. However, I do not perceive this in any way. But the bergamot still jumps around between the rose and all the other green stuff that makes up the top note
As quickly as the top note was supplemented or overtaken by the heart note, as quickly the components of the base note are added. Now the fragrance is actually starting to unfold all its green. The fragrance becomes light - really light - creamy. The woody notes now contrast with the bergamot, while the rose was already unspectacularly saying goodbye. This fragrance image is created - attention - within just fifteen minutes and decorates the wrist for about four hours. The Sillage is here quite small, why one does not really have to exercise caution with the dosage.

Conclusion: The fragrance is nothing spectacular, but also nothing with which one can really do a lot wrong. As someone who had little experience in perfumery at the time, I could have been much worse off with the fragrance gift. This product from Lacoste is really not a real flop, and I find it much more pleasant and wearable than the currently often sweet and sticky fragrance landscape alà Paco Rabane and Co., which is overloaded with an excessive amount of vanilla and tonka bean. (this side blow had to be simple).

A fragrance that is definitely worthy for summer. It has a different and fresh-green aura. Not suitable for blind buying but worth a try!
