Candy necklace
Initially I thought here we go again. Candy necklace/candyfloss opening. (Is that the baccarat rouge thing people keep talking about?) But pretty soon it twists and turns into a more sour candy, then into a box of pencilshavings. Aha! And that’s got me hooked.
Boy am I a sucker for pencil shavings. I don’t know why, I just love it. I must agree that the scent is still a bit weird. That’s usually the case with Quentin Bisch’s creations I’ve noticed. Weird, yet sublime, but hard to pull off at a casual meeting or anything like that. It keeps yoyo-ing between this sour note, the wood and then delicious sweet amber again.

Wholly Unique Amber Experience
Sheesh, how to start this review…
I’ll admit Crivelli makes extraits that make me go “huh, what is this??”, curious objects put forth amidst the sea of Sauvage Eau de Toilette and Le Mâle Elixir – a mysterious monolithic ambre presence in the middle of a dark jungle, one that’s a worthy trek for those that crave adventure.
From open to close this scent, like Patchouli Magnetik, morphs and changes at a glacial pace. Patience is key with these extraits.
The ChromatiQue Jungle —

The First Steps:
Davana, a note I find quite meditative if I’m being honest. Its green herbal aroma greets me upon first spray, slightly tea like, alongside a very resinous and slightly oily note presents itself in the first 5-10m on my skin. I find the sillage of spicy herbaceous aromas, quite enveloping for around the first 30 minutes and some (though most) may find it headache inducing especially if more than two small sprays is applied.
Further into the start of this journey, an interesting turn – a stark contrast of spicy and fruity notes collide amidst the Akigalawood and amber accord as it radiates from my skin. Already this amber is unique in its own right, the contrast of fruitiness to spicy resinous facets is shocking at first. It’s a little cold and a tad metallic lending from the pepper. But keep treading, the journey has yet to come to an end.

In the Heart of the Jungle (T +6hrs):
Deep in the heart of the chromatic jungle an ancient fire roars. Incense warmed by crackling Amberwood, benzoin droplets pool by the base of the fire emitting its warm ambery tone. The smell of vanilla wafting in the air amidst tendrils of smoke and resins.
The spiciness has fallen off some, there’s now a pronounced ambery aroma mixed with a hefty dose of Akigalawood, and it’s warm and slightly sweet with a balanced unisex feel.

The Steps out from the Tree Line (T +12hrs):
All that remains of this journey, is the sweet aroma of vanilla and incense, amber continuing to pulse from my skin. I can smell the woody aroma of the jungle behind me, however it’s a fading glimpse. I’ve been shown an array of dazzling colors and aromas, like flecks of chromatic roygbiv paint dashed onto a canvas, this scent offers an amber experience unlike any other I’ve smelled. This trek will remain to be worth while.
Afterthoughts:
Is this worth $295/50ml MSRP? Perhaps. Given that very little goes a long way with Crivelli extraits, it could be worth saving your money. Crivelli of course is a very “love it or hate it” house, so, your opinion on perceived worth may differ. This scent is well worth a sample however, especially if you like spicy resinous profiles!

Endless Alkigalawood!
it starts off like a more subdued Purpose, full of the eternal and much-abused Akigalawood patented by Givaudan, which disgusts me and makes me nauseous! It may be an innovative molecule, but in the last 5 years it has been abused to the limit by Bisch together with other Givaudan perfumers. It is far too metallic and dissonant, in addition to the technical and olfactory qualities it offers.
Coming back, the perfume evolves beautifully, it goes into a kind of Caftan from YSL, about as full-bodied but a bit more synthetic in approach.
I like that they still used olibanum resinoid and myrrh and benzoin. A predictable interpretation of amber, which ultimately remains a common amber!
It doesn't have much of a story, but it aligns with the bombastic assortment of the house!
For me it is not with love, it is a little above average.

A different enough take on an Amber
I was lucky enough to hear from Thibaud himself (who also speaks Portuguese, and 6 other languages ) a wonderful explanation and journey through his creation process and inspiration behind each Maison Crivelli scent.

To me, one of the most interesting collections out there in recent times.
And Ambre ChromatiQue is no exception!

What a beautiful Amber this is. In fact, one of the best I’ve tried so far!

This is a warm, radiant and powerful amber.
It manages to be soft and cozy yet bold and present.

Opens up very spicy and dry with pink pepper and a lot of incense, which almost has a vegetal touch almost leaning towards Labdanum. A wonderful incense it is.

The drydown is much softer in texture. Almost feels like your skin on steroids.

This has a boozy Rum-like nuance from the Davana and peachy impression from Osmanthus.

The base is ultra smooth with Bourbon Vanilla - which almost has in this an olive facet (I know, I know) - and the amber accords playing the major role.

I had the pleasure to experience the isolated raw materials by themselves with Thibaud, and you can really tell has it all and then some.

Oh and as for the performance: this has to be scrubbed off a couple times - I can still smell it almost 24h later now.

If a church were edible!
This Crivelli masterpiece runs along my salivary glands straight into my heart.

Powerful, yet delicately tempered. It resonates in harmonious unity, like a Bach prelude. Intelligent, European, but not old-fashioned.

Springlike amber — glowing golden, with all good things still ahead. Spruce tips, vanilla, incense. Unexpected, yet the only possible combination.

Santa, I hope you can hear me — I’ve been a very good boy ;)

Opening with a pronounced davana, pink pepper and frankincense. Resinous drydown with benzoin, a sweet vanilla and a peachy osmanthus.

Starts off a bit soury-creamy? Whiffs of sweetness (is that amber?)playing ping-pong with the nicest pencilshavings ever. Lasts an eternity.

Creamy, peachy osmanthus and green, spicy devana settle into a mildly smoky, sweet resinous base. Elegant, uplifting, it's textbook Quentin.

very mature amber imo, not like grand soir. Pretty spicy and interesting, smells old in my opinion tho.

One of the most unique amber of my collection. It lasts 12h on skin and you really smell it during 12h. So rich and smart.

Blend of amber-warm spicy notes w/ moderate sweet facets & some floral tones. Winter-fall, very loud for first ~4h, masculine profile imo.

Ambre Chromatique is interestingly unique Don't just spray paper, as it can be very sharp; it was a markedly different experience on skin.

Very subtle take on Amber genre by Quentin Bisch. Was expecting bold amber fragrance but the end product feels sketchy.
