Rose and leather in harmony
Oud Stallion isn't groundbreaking. If you've experimented with leather fragrances, you've smelled this many times before. Floral and fruity notes are used to bring liveliness to the leathery and woody ones. I have to give Thibaud Crivelli and Jordi Fernández some credit though, as I consider this to be the most elegant take on the DNA.

Don't be fooled by the first 10-15 minutes where the leather might come off as animalic. The perfume quickly opens up its beautiful heart of tart pink rose, uplifting jasmine and cherry sweetness with almondy nuances from tonka bean and benzaldehyde. The sweet contrast to leather and oud is further supported by cinnamon undertones.

Similarly to Oud Cadenza, Jordi utilizes a mixture of spices and aroma chemicals with fresh, citrusy and pinene qualities. As such, leather and oud accords are easily digestible, almost like an appetizer. While they provide masculine character, the initial scent profile leans sweet and is very wearable.

After 30 minutes, I'm mostly picking up leather, cherry and rose with a touch of woodiness that ties everything together. The warm and sweet facets become even more pronounced once coumarin and vanillin start showing up, along with chocolaty earthiness of patchouli. This is grounded by a dry cedarwood accord, akin to Cadenza.

Performance is similar to other Crivelli extraits. 32% oil concentration offers 10-12 hours of longevity with awesome projection. This isn't a perfume for a cowboy, more so for a lawyer or a politician. Oud Stallion has some darkness to it, but a guy who wears it doesn't handle livestock or break horses. A tuxedo is more of his speed.

Maybe if I was a cowboy
Oud Stallion, relative to the previous release Oud Maracujá, opens more animalic, more aggressive, and it feels like more barnyardy. Just like with Maracuja, there's no actual oud in the scent pyramid - they're using wood & patchouli to offer up that vibe. The main thing you can notice incorporated into the profile is an accord that I can best describe as "oily", like the hydrocarbon vibes you smell in Cuirs or "Join The Club - Don | XerJoff".

Up-close, the blend is a little bit balanced out - there is a pretty notable blend of saffron and cardamom, with the saffron offering mild rubbery tones the same way it does in scents like "The Secret Collection - Scirocco | Moresque". Drydown tones might also evoke comparisons to scents like Blessed Baraka. The rose is invisible for the first ~10 minutes, becomes minimal after that - I wouldn't say the rose is a driving force in this scent by any means.

I think the biggest letdown of this scent comes from the fact that the leather & cedar (fake oud) tones completely overwhelm the scent, and the sweet spices can only do so much to bail it out. That's kind-of where I got the title of this review - the core vibe of the scent is like a leather saddle you put on your horse in the Texas oil country.

Sillage is better than Maracuja's by a point. I came back to revise the review as the scent really did die off just as quick as Maracuja, to the point where I'd say this is weaker in the 10 hour range. Overall, it's a solid release if you want something uber masculine to make a statement with - I'm just not the target demographic.

Pastry chef on a wild horse
I remember sniffing this for the first time in the boutique. A vivid image of a horse popped into my head as I closed my eyes. “I’m in for a ride!” is what I thought, I wasn’t used to these kinds of animalic smells.

Couple of months later I decided to buy the discovery set on which this review is based. Now having worn it a couple of times I found it time for a review.

First spray. The stuff is full of heavy materials like wood, nutmeg and leather. And something volatile, medicinal, which I now associate with oud somehow. It’s immediately apparent that it doesn’t need many sprays. It jumps right at your throat. Like riding a crazy horse on a rodeo, the first hour and a half I’m struggling. But then the horse is tamed a bit. I’m getting whiffs of stuff that belong in a kitchen, nutmeg (or cinnamon even?), chocolate, roasted tonka (I’m getting coconut vibes). But that wild horse is still raging in your kitchen while you’re snacking those cakes.

It’s a great adventure but constantly calling your attention. I’m quite sensitive to smells so that drains my battery fast. It’s strong, pungent, tough and right in your face.

Long story short, I love the smell of this but it’s not versatile enough for my taste. I won’t buy a bottle as I don’t see myself wearing it much.

Also zusammengefasst:

-ein absoluter Statement Duft
- dunkel, tief und mysteriös
- extrem sexy
- Komplimentegetter
- universell einsetzbar

Testet den Duft selber, macht euch ein Bild von Ihm und hört nicht auf meine oder andere Rezensionen. Jeder empfindet Düfte unterschiedlich und dass macht es halt auch eben so besonders.

Oud Stallion; a trip back to the 80s

I am a self-professed ‘style cop-out’ I don’t and never have dressed or been close to ‘fashionable’ I can’t claim to have been at the forefront of any stylistic zeitgeist. I’m not a follower neither.

So when people talk about ‘what’s going to be the new thing in fragrances?’ I keep my mouth shut as I know whatever I say. It will be the complete volte-face of my position , so when I say what I’m about to say…I will no doubt be 100% wrong.

That’s just my disclaimer.

I know you know that trends and such like are cyclical when I was a yute in the 90s the 70s were in vogue (for a period) it’s a common thing that for a while the prevailing generation will get some influence from the styles of 20 years ago ( for example in the 70s UK before the big punk movement there was a trend towards Teddy Boy fashions from the 50s). Now I suspect there’s a trend towards the start of the 21st century style and fashion, but I could be wrong.

I think the trend in Fragrances will be similar to fashion and other parts of culture, but I think there’s a trend to go further back, almost 40 years back; and back to those ‘Powerhouses’ of the early 80s.

And that brings me to Maison Crivelli’s Oud Stallion. I wore this a few days ago and at first I really wasn’t that impressed. A bit disappointed really. Not with the way it smelt but with something I usually don’t care about and seldom mention. I then stepped outside and the projection just off my skin, and I started to really take it in; a fog of leather, cardamom and nutmeg is lovely and warm as it wraps around you. I kept on sniffing my chest. This alongside the other releases from Maison Crivelli Oud Cadenza and Maracujá gives the more masculine leaning impression. That with the name kings of harks back to that early 80s style powerhouse fragrance. This fragrance appears to be more ‘me’; that’s not to say I wouldn’t wear unisex or feminine leaning fragrances I do and will; but my preference is toward the more hyper masculine fragrances. I feel no issues with people having a preference similar to mine, as there’s never anything wrong with a preference more for the ‘extremes’. Leaving the sociopolitical diatribe behind I think this heralds the trend toward a move toward those 80s powerhouses as I think there’s a rejection of this super clean blue shower gel thing we have now. I have a theory as to why we’ve ended up where we are with those scents (and a vague theory as to why we might be moving backwards and not positively to those 80s scents). I might explore that further, somewhere, but Oud Stallion is my favourite from the brand so far and I think I need to wear it much sooner and more often to really appreciate it.

People this is just my opinion; we need to remember that just because a venue of influencers have a platform and an opinion it doesn’t mean they are right. Neither am I or you, but opinions should be heard challenged (strongly when they’re ‘-ist’) but not taken as fact.

Non-animalic suede leather with a slight “oudy” background. Some sweetness from the tonka. Good performance. Very very boring.

A seemingly normal oud-rose with metric tonnes of safraleine added on top. Rubbery, a little peachy, and clean. Fernández makes magic again.

Leather/oud accords with a hydrocarbon vibe, aided by the sweet spices (saffron/cardamom) and mild rose. Uber masculine, fall-winter.

Boring. Fernandez creates mostly molecular scents. Stallion is herbal-spicy but forgettable. Oud 7 or Leather Oud crush it easily.
