sweet musky oud
I find Micallef's creations similar to those of Parfumerie Generale, in the sense that they are generally pleasing and come with a dose of sweetness, with a few exceptions. Which make them easy to wear, difficult to displease or be negative about, but also I find it difficult to warrant the price tag when it's just not special enough. A friend gave me a personalized perfume from Cyprus that contains a sweet light musk and oud. Aoud Gourmet is basically that, in pleasant proportions- sweetness, musk and oud. I do like Aoud Gourmet, it lasts long enough (about 8 hours), it's not a mega loud scent nor is it a skin scent, would do well in company. However I find it a struggle to part with the required funds for it no matter how beautiful the scent and bottle are. It's just not special enough and for 2014, I've vowed to only add bottles that have that extra special touch.

Micallef and Oud
Micallef fragrances were the first niche scents I got to know. And although I have since discovered and fallen in love with a whole range of others, certain Micallefs still remain at the top of my wish list.

Aoud Gourmet is among them, as is Hiver from the Seasons line. Although according to the pyramid there is no Oud in it, for me this is the most beautiful Oud fragrance I have encountered so far. Various Montales that I have had the chance to try turned out to be completely not my style; they are too harsh and too bitter for me, in contrast to Micallef's understanding of Oud.

Micallef's Oud fragrances are all more on the gourmand side than anything else. And Aoud Gourmet is the prime example of this.

The scent is very soft, creamy, gourmand from the very beginning, and still quite sweet in the top notes. However, this sweetness fades quite quickly, and it is rather the soft, sweet scent of beeswax, to which the other fragrance components have been skillfully added to achieve that Oud effect that completely captivates me.

It is completely impossible for me to pick out individual notes. Aoud Gourmet is the perfect fragrance for this time of year for both men and women. Soft, warm, cozy, sweet but not overly so, slightly bitter but only a tiny bit, creamy, and just incredibly cuddly.

After several hours, a soft wood note lingers, which carries the scent for quite a long time. Aoud Gourmet is not a powerhouse, but it has a fairly decent sillage that spreads the fragrance throughout the surroundings of the wearer, even gently and softly throughout the entire room.

The longevity is - in contrast to Rose Aoud - quite good, and I always look forward to wearing it until my sweet little mini is used up.

I would definitely not wear Aoud Gourmet at work; not everyone likes such gourmand fragrances or scents with this Oud touch. I love them, and Aoud Gourmet will eventually (someday) find its way into my collection.

The Aoud Pig
Louce has embarked on the tiny mission of turning me into an Aoud fan. It's not working yet, but I'm happy to volunteer to act as a sort of "Aoud pig" (in the sense of a truffle pig or a sniffer dog): I find the tiniest bit of Aoud in EVERY fragrance, no matter how many gourmand ingredients, flowers, or other distracting notes are poured over it. I can smell Aoud from 100 km away, in the smallest dose, immediately and unmistakably, brutally (I can do this with fresh coriander too - the tip of a leaf in 10 liters of soup, and I can still taste it). I'm amazed that I react SO vehemently compared to other noses. The fact that Turandot has to find the common denominator between White Aoud and Aoud Gourmet drives me almost to madness.

Because even in Aoud Gourmet, I smell only, only, only Aoud. Of course, I also smell all the other fine delicious ingredients that make this perfume sweet, spicy, honeyed, woody, and soft. But the oil from the agarwood lies above everything, is between everything, is the basis of everything - in short: it is omnipresent and all-powerful. It's a bit like a character in one of my favorite crime novels "Death on the Nile" says when comparing his ex with the new love by his side: "It was like the moon after sunrise. You don't notice it's still in the sky." The Aoud pushes everything else into the background in my nose, and there the other ingredients almost cease to exist. And if you, like me, are not a fan of Aoud, the gourmet version is unfortunately not an alternative either.

As a beginner fragrance, to get a feel for the Aoud theme, Aoud Gourmet is a good choice; the delicious aspects sweeten the strict Aoud note. It's like bitter medicine that is easier to swallow when drizzled on a piece of sugar cube. And if the Aoud scent works and resonates, this is a nice treat choice. As Apicius aptly noted: extreme, but not experimental.

Unfortunately, dear Lu, I'm still not there yet ;-)

Pipe Tobacco!
Aoud Gourmet? Interesting, because I already find the fragrance Aoud Man quite gourmand with its honey note. But with Aoud Gourmet, Micallef takes it a step further. This scent reminds me immensely of honey-sweet pipe tobacco. Not tobacco smoke, but the smell of juicy tobacco flakes that hits you when you open the pack. However, it is the scent of fruity perfumed tobacco varieties. In particular, I smell Mirabelle!

This oud perfume is opulent, very sweet, but also fruity. It is very far from the dark-floral style of Montale ouds. As a counterbalance to the sweet fruit, something quite sinister has been used - the artificial note of cashmere wood. This brings a black, charred, liquorice-like woodiness into perfumes. Actually, it’s an ingredient I dislike, but here it works very well. In a way, it’s the Black Cavendish component in the otherwise bright Virginia blend.

Aoud Gourmet is in some ways an enhancement of the already opulent Aoud Man. Due to the sweet fruit, it is just about unisex suitable - for the pipe-smoking lady. This is one of the few gourmand perfumes that I like, but it requires a bit of courage and a sense of eccentricity from the wearer. It is an extreme scent, but not an experimental one. I think it’s good.

Another new Aoud experience for me
Thanks to Louce, a new chapter of getting to know Aoud and especially learning to distinguish it is now at hand.

Of course, it is tempting to read your comments, sniff the fragrance, and say: Yes, that’s how it is. But I will try to set aside what you have already written and let my own images emerge.

My first experience with the topic was White Oudh by Montale, which I would describe as light, velvety, and dry.

Aoud Gourmet presents itself completely differently at first, and I had to try to rediscover the special note that is supposed to be common to both. For me, the scent begins finely spicy and medicinal, but the impression quickly transforms into something softer, more caressing. Yes, I can also compare it to tobacco; however, on my skin, the scent does not become honey-sweet but rather smooth, like soft black leather with a hint of smokiness. Not rocker leather, but something like my old leather jacket with a shawl collar and tie belt, which I still enjoy wearing, even if it’s no longer in fashion.

I can also identify a fruity note, but for me, this fruit is not yellow, not mirabelle, but a dark, aromatic, velvety plum. Completely devoid of any fruit acidity, nothing that makes your mouth water, but rather experienced as creamy. There’s also a hint of licorice that flashes up, but thankfully not that black, strictly sweet stuff from the candy aisle, but the root drug from licorice that I used to nibble on instead of chewing gum during my apprenticeship.

I associate scents, for whatever reason, often not just with colors but with music. And while White Oudh reminds me of bright Bach trumpets, I hear the velvety dark tones of a saxophone with Aoud Gourmet. Directly a bit melancholic, like I recently heard in a hotel bar.

I am very curious about what the chapter of Aoud, Oudh, or whatever else it has to offer will still reveal to me.

Honey passionately kisses spices. They eventually end up in a bed of amber, woods, and musk. It's pure sensual passion.

Very sweet first-generation Aoudh scent, it didn't stay with me long, the honey pot. I don't like either component.

Here you get marzipan-like honey sweetness on the nose + musk & cozy amber. The sweetness is kept in check by clove, woods, and patchouli.

Even for gourmets: You can't decant the scent, here an unbalanced composition of honey & marzipan, nutmeg-cedar-musk!

Oud, Oud, Oud...then a hint of honey, marzipan + oud. The Aoud in the name is no joke, and gourmet doesn’t necessarily mean gourmand, right? ;-)

""Clove in Honey" would be the better name for AG. The gourmand opening soon becomes spiced. The other ingredients are just supporting roles.

A very soft, beautiful honey scent. Nicely spiced. Not too overpowering. Patchouli isn't too earthy, transitions into a great wood.
