As expected, Habanita Light.
Which is not a criticism at all! I love Habanita, but man, she's hard to pull off sometimes. Really requires a particular set and setting.

La Cologne, though, is airy and more floral. Perfect for warm-weather days. Lots of ylang here, and not so much of the mastic/peppery incense of the OG. Instead, primarily a puffy fluffy amber-vanillic powder. Semi-sweet and not cloying. I can wear this to work with no qualms.

This is much more akin to Chanel Eau Premiere than Habanita L'esprit. To me, L'esprit is a very rose forward flanker. While it is also powdery, L'esprit has loads more screetchy white musk. Not ugly, just not pretty. As plain as a pikestaff. La Cologne has much more pizazz!

Also, can we just take a moment for this bottle?! It's stunning in person.

Virginal? Not for a long time!
Last year, a fragrance icon turned 100! Congratulations Habanita and sincere thanks to Molinard! And even though the Federal President held back on wishes for the 100th anniversary of a perfume, this is the right place for a little belated birthday greeting!

Throughout the century of fragrance, Habanita has changed from time to time. The perfume has received different bottles, which were predominantly based on a design of bathing Naiads or Nymphs, inspired by the design of René Lalique. One of the most beautiful bottles of this kind dates back to 2012 and features a continuous, raised frieze of naked women bathing on a pure black bottle. With this new, dreamy, and provocative bottle came a very successful revision of the perfume scent. In 2013, Habanita L'esprit was released in white, and in 2016 Habanita La Cologne in a clear, transparent glass bottle, as well as in 2021 for the centenary birthday, the red Habanita Anniversary Edition. Habanita is "a hit" in every variant and not a "girl's perfume." Surely, it lost its virginity the day it was released in 1921 as a cigarette scent, but definitely by 1924 when it was allowed to be called perfume. This is mainly due to the outstanding and seductive smell of the perfume, which is often said to have an aphrodisiac effect, as well as the magnificent, erotically designed bottles, visible, tangible, palpable, exciting!

Seeing Habanita La Cologne as a Cologne, as the name suggests, goes a bit in the wrong direction, because its strength and endurance are on par with a perfume and expansive. Only in direct comparison with the EdP does this designation make a well-meaning sense. Both scents are clearly sisters in character and are very similar in their smell. The inner values give the older one in the black dress a characteristically aromatic scent, which for me is wonderfully spicy-floral, sinful-vanilla, dark-lustful, liqueur-like-smoky, sweet-balsamic, and woody-leathery, simply irresistibly attractive. The younger La Cologne does not skimp on this either in its transparent and provocative appearance. However, it seduces much more subtly, with significantly more finesse, and starts its conquests a bit fresher and brighter. I perceive La Cologne more as an irresistible offer than a storming in the style of the Eau de Parfum, which can score so powerfully.

Alongside the initially mild freshness, Habanita La Cologne surprises with a tolerable but pronounced oriental note and does not display the often perceived "go for it temperament" of the perfume. It is perhaps noteworthy that vanilla is absent from the fragrance note spectrum of the Cologne. It is not really missing, because after the zesty and bold first hours, the vetiver-oakmoss-cedar-amber base perfectly rounds off the scent with a silky-warm powderiness. Nevertheless, the Cologne in top, heart, and base notes essentially always reminds of the black original, but comes across as somewhat lighter, finer, and more agile without losing intensity and aromaticity.

Perhaps another similar example. This comparison applies analogously and with the same result to the juxtaposition of the perfume Shalimar against Shalimar Cologne, of course with a slightly different scent character. And in both cases, I personally prefer the Cologne just a little bit more, but the differences in ratings around 9.5 are rather small!

The bottles of all variants of Habanita are a feast for the eyes. It is simply a joy to look at these little bottles, to see, feel, and experience the grandeur of the frieze on all four sides, how the elevated curves caress the fingertips. The bottles encourage the viewer to take them in hand, to examine them closely, to try them, and to enjoy them. They are a focal point in any collection, and while the colored bottles additionally advertise with their provocative color, the transparent glass bottle of Habanita La Cologne, despite and because of its transparency, exudes a rather mysterious aura and represents for me the charming playfulness of this 100-year love affair best!

As a Habanita fan, it was an honor for me to congratulate and to present another variant of these masterpieces here. You deserve heartfelt thanks for your diligent reading!

A Hidden Treasure
I wonder why there isn't a comment on this fragrance yet. I acquired it about a year ago, I don't even remember what prompted me to buy it, and it was just sitting in my closet. Then I dug it out to send a decant. The next morning, I walked into the kitchen (where I always decant over the sink) and thought, wow, what smells so great in here? That morning, I had an appointment with the beautician for eyelash tinting, and she asked: what a lovely perfume you’re wearing! Maybe O de Lancome? I replied: not wearing any at all. I arrived there freshly showered, hair freshly washed, with no trace of fragrance. The only remnants were from Habanita Cologne.
Such a fragrance intensity, sillage, and longevity I find spectacular, and this scent could become my signature fragrance.

Great Scent Aura
So I had to spend some time with this fragrance.

Because: at first, I didn't know if I liked it or not. The opening is VERY - to put it mildly, INTRUSIVE. And by that, I mean it invades the nose, spreads out there, and makes it impossible to smell anything else for a while.

Bergamot and lemon have a pull that leaves me breathless. This doesn't change very quickly; only after about 1 hour do the heart notes emerge, but they remain briefly to merge into an oakmossy-citrusy-vetiver-ambery symbiosis that I actually like quite a lot.

And then, right at the end, but really RIGHT at the end, this smoky vanilla note comes in, really strange, it actually smells a bit like Shalimar, a very unusual scent progression, but certainly not uninteresting. I find it really quite extraordinary.

After a while, however, I notice that the scent does contain something that bothers me just a little. It might be the nutmeg note after all, because I really like everything else.
Anyway, I will give it another try some other day. One is not always in the same mood. Maybe later I will like EVERYTHING.

Many thanks to Ponticus, who inspired me to want to own this scent, and I do not regret the purchase.

P.S. - You can hit me (or haha, not really, I'm not directly reachable), but after sleeping on it, I think the scent resembles HABIT ROUGE - uh somehow, right?!

A great thing.. but without boasting.
Anyone who knows the original Habanita in the black bottle, or even has it at home, knows that this beautiful, long-lasting, and very projecting perfume is quite a "big deal," almost boastfully extending its scent claws to give you a good dose. And you find it good to super good when clove, vetiver, vanilla, and who knows what other wonderful ingredients duel.
The scent says: "Here I am, and I will stay for a long time" and comfortably settles almost self-satisfied on your neck, décolletage, or wrist.
The "Habanita La Cologne" does this too, in essence. However, its "facial expression" is somewhat different. It is not as strict to the wearer and nose, does not look quite so assertive, and is almost mild about its existence, while "Mama Habanita" fully displays the matriarch as a kind of "Donna Matrona," her daughter is proud but does not always want to have the last word.
With its nutmeg and clove spiciness, it is a bit quieter than Mama, and the woods and flowers in the heart carry not a signal red but rather a warm red flag ahead of them.
With cedar and amber in the base alongside oak moss and vetiver, it feels a bit "finer," although in the abundance of aromas, it reminds one of its "big Mama."
I appreciate both; the "Fat Black" is more suited for the colder season, while the slightly thinner white is for warm days. That’s when the oak moss and vetiver really come into their own....

It's like a sponge cake topped with lemon. Powdery but not too heavy. A strong aldehyde that vivify all shades. Somewhat butch grandma type.

The classic as a cologne?
Yes!
And really well done!
Citrusy woody notes combined with green spicy nuances are well balanced.

Great combination of Habanita's erotic timbre and the clear melody of a cologne. For me, it belongs in the "Black Colognes" category.

For me, the most beautiful version of the classic. Less dense, but a bit more oriental in its presence. It has a Shalimar vibe - H+S lush.
