Pungent ointment
Sharp, biting opening, a medicine-like smell, slightly reminiscent of some juniper-tar based ointment prescribed against rheumatism. I can't agree with Apicus on this one: hate it! Can neither detect any vanilla-warmth or pleasant woody ingredients in Boisé Vanillé which - like many scents I don't fancy - lasts for hours. A total bummer for me. This is a fragrance which would really put me off, if someone wore it in my presence. But I'm lucky, I've never smelled it on anybody before, just sampled it today. Sniffing my way around samples is always a fascinating experience - and I conclude that Montale is a house behind which I have to put a very big question mark. One more perfume from their range which I cannot stand. Good to know.

Montale's Femme Fatale
Boisé Vanillé is one of the rare fragrances that nobody should die before having smelled it. It is very much off the beaten track with its surprisingly different handling of vanilla. Whenever this note is being found in the pyramid, we are quick to call the fragrance an oriental. However, despite vanilla, Boisé Vanillé is very much the style of a a dark chypre!

The fragrance has a fruity opening which salutes us with a rather strange contrast to the vanilla note. It is a little bit the kind of dried fruits style although with lemon and bergamot, the known scent notes do not reveal much. Fruitiness is top notes only in here, and it dies away quickly into a solid but very, very dark kind of vanilla and patchouli accord without lots of further development.

This vanilla is far from being broad or sweetish. No custard! It has has herbal aspects, and a wonderful deep and dark transparency or iridescence which is the core of its very unique style. Besides that, it might have some reminiscence to certain ambery perfumes.

Enough said, Boisé Vanillé is one of those where the list of scent notes does not reveal the essential. It is listed as a ladies fragrance on Parfumo, but if so, then it is one of the very few that I wear. I think it can also be worn by men and some women: no girlies, no blondes – rather for self confident ladies with a darker complexion who are proud of their live experience. It is definitely old-fashioned, and if you want to make use of a clichée, you may very well link it to the concept of the femme fatale.

While being not the best choice for everybody, it should have a gorgeous effect on those who fit to it. The brand Montale is best known for their ouds, and to be honest, many of their other perfumes are not that interesting. Boisé Vanillé, however, is one of the few exceptions. It is a true gem and highly recommendable. Test it if you can find it!

Hidden Gem
Blind tests are sometimes so exciting and I always like to do them, even though I'm often wrong about the result. This was also the case with Montale Boisé Vanille. A fragrance that I would never have considered testing. Montale is simply not my brand. I've tried a few and was mostly put off by the roaring, loud chemicals and the fact that it lasts for hours and the sillage lasts all the way to Düsseldorf. And that's a bit of the beautiful Albtrauf here in Baden-Württemberg.

Boisé Vanille, one of the older Montales, also has this kind of sillage. However, this one smells very nice. And since I only applied one droplet to test it, it works for me. I wouldn't spray this fragrance if I wanted to wear it properly, though. This is one for dabbing. For the parts of the body where the blood pulsates. It's a sensual fragrance with a beautiful balsamic. At first sniff, it seems to me like a classic vintage perfume from the fifties or sixties. Even older, because of me. This spicy top note makes me think very briefly of classics such as Opium or Must de Cartier. But the fragrance quickly reveals its heart. A full, rich amber introduces the heart note. The perfume becomes sweeter, more sensual but never drifts in a gourmand direction. This classicism, which is inherent to the fragrance, remains throughout. Later in the base, it becomes spicier with patchouli. I also detect labdanum and something animalic, probably musk. I also cannot rule out civet, which is very subtle.

Well, I was completely wrong in my initial assumption that I had a vintage classic under my nose. I would have guessed many things. A Lagerfeld, an Armani, a Nische for all I care, but then perhaps something older from Nicolai, Maître Parfumeur et Gantier or maybe Villoresi. In its amber phase, it certainly has traits of Amre Tibet by MPeG. But Montale? No, I would never have guessed this brand. All the better the surprise. And proof that we should never completely dismiss a brand if the first test fragrances are not at all to our liking. After all, there are a few candidates in the portfolio of my favorite houses that would not get a particularly good rating from me.

This Montale does, even if it's not my type of fragrance at all. If you love classics and amber and like a little more sillage, this is definitely the right scent for you.

Many thanks to Ergoproxy for the testing opportunity.
