Sweet, spicy eau
It's still not the season for this kind of perfume (it has been snowing today), but I defied the climate and decided to give this a spin after a long while...

I got my sample from LuckyScent, and decanters are pretty much the only way to go for samples it seems since PdN do not have a sampling program of their own. That’s the kind of thing that just makes me sad with smaller, less known brands and houses, because while most people in Western countries can get a sniff of Shalimar or any one of the latest designer frags in pretty much any department store this side of the Ural, the niche houses need other ways to make their products known. Having a sampling program is one of the more efficient ones.

Anyway. What is NOT saddening is the scent itself. In l’Eau à la Folie, the citric top notes give off a more green and bright rather than citric impression, and before the perfume has really had time to open up I did wonder if it’s yet another citrusy-herbal take on the cologne structure. As the topmost top notes dissipate, it becomes apparent that it is not. The perfume takes on a fuller, more aromatic and herbal character and sweetens up a little with slightly honeyed (but not cloying!) touch while retaining some of its opening tartness. It is pretty linear from that on, and snuggles closer to the skin as time goes by (it was pretty much gone from my skin after 6 hours), but it is still a worthwhile perfume.

I am not sure if this is full-bottle worthy for me at this time, but it is one of the more enjoyable new perfumes I’ve tried recently and it's surprising how the fruity, berry notes come together and give off a more aromatic and herbal air rather than fruit and berry. Do put it on your to try list! It is absolutely delightful and has undone some of the trauma I’ve suffered through sniffing too many so-called eaux that resemble bug spray more than any living thing. If I tried assigning gender to this one, I’d fail miserably. So yeah. Try it!

on the green meadow
Among the scents that waft over from my childhood, the fragrance of fresh laundry dried in the air and sun still lingers.
Laundry that dances joyfully in the wind and over which the iron glides more like a feather than a weight.

This scent, which even lingers in the closet for some time, is called childhood - childhood summer!
My grandmother's clotheslines were stretched between sturdy posts beneath the large fruit trees.
Especially during the fruit tree blossom, the delicate, long-missed scent of awakening life wafted over to the laundry; from the almost always wild meadow arose a robust aroma of weeds and meadow flowers, often trampled by bare feet, making it particularly intense.

With this Northern German impression, "L'Eau à la Folie" does not wait: instead, this fragrance composition evokes a wide, undulating hilly landscape with large, untouched meadows, through which a small stream dances cheerfully, surrounded by light woods with plenty of herbaceous undergrowth.
How well these meadows would be suited for old-fashioned laundry bleaching.

Patricia de Nicolai opens this entertaining summer fragrance quite traditionally with fruity freshness.
Related to the Guerlain dynasty on her mother's side, perfume is both a favorite and a concern for her.
Her long experience has also taught her: "A perfume that everyone likes is uninteresting."
"L'Eau à la Folie" is certainly not uninteresting: the light-footed sprightliness of lime, mandarin, mango, and surprisingly peach skin immediately invites a smile. (Advertising would now say: "Joy is coming!")
It is delightful that Ms. de Nicolai here forgoes the already "overused" bergamot; thank you, as it would only dampen this lightness of being (that is my feeling).
A generous dose of jasmine - now the time of the glorious white flowers with their five petals, framing the golden-yellow shining face, begins again - stops the perhaps initially emerging impression of a "sporty or unisex scent."
This sensual-feminine bloom adds esprit, already bringing a thought of refinement into play.
Juniper berry, dark and spicy, plays with cardamom and pink pepper in a fragrance league; these somewhat robust companions skillfully flatter the "fine lady" jasmine.
With the fruity aromas of the entrance, my senses already signal: summer, joy, lightness, and perhaps a little more than fun, "a little flirtation"?
To this impression, musk contributes, not sparingly, but still not breaking the light summer fragrance frame, along with the woody spice of cedar and castoreum.
"L'Eau à la Folie" thus transforms from a girl with braids, joyfully skipping barefoot and with a flowing skirt through the meadows, picking flowers, into a woman.
A woman with charm and a sensually cheerful aura. She too laughs as she walks through the grass - sandals in hand, surrounded by her flowing hair and the wide skirt of her summer dress.
Her happy laughter faintly resembles the ringing of bells: this fragrance woman brings happiness!

"L'Eau à la Folie" is, to my delight, clear and initially even a bit "biting": perhaps it is the pink pepper that hits my allergy-plagued nose.
But that quickly subsides: this fragrance water becomes beautiful, really beautiful!
A bright, warm day under a blue summer sky with happily dancing sheep clouds, a large ice cream sundae in a café garden, or a refined cocktail during the proverbial "Blue Hour" - all of this can be "L'Eau à la Folie".
Beauty is known to be in the eye of the beholder!
Let us simply view this enchanting summer fragrance with the eyes of a lover: We see a shimmering, graceful fragrance creature that dances lightly and a bit mischievously through the day. But we also notice that this "summer woman" is not lacking in depth; the base notes already stand for that.

Years ago, I fell in love with this lively fragrance creature; the first sample came in a fragrance package from Greece: as a "stowaway," I didn't even see it among all the packaging. That would have been a great pity!
For since then, we have danced through a cheerful summer day time and again, "L'Eau à la Folie" accompanying us for several hours: radiant, smiling, chattering - simply spreading good cheer.
Summer-light yet not frivolous, fruity and a little bit tempting - these feelings are locked in the classically elegant bottle: Let them out into the air, and they will rejoice with joy!

Lemon Soda, please!
The first rays of the early summer sun caress the garden. Moisture hangs in the air, the scent of leaves and blossoms awakening under the dew drops.
Slowly, I begin my morning round through this little green realm. My first attention goes to the lemon balm bush. Bright green, sparkling fresh in scent, it stretches its leaves towards me; I can't help but pluck one and crush it between my fingers. The lemon becomes intense, as if I had just pressed one into sparkling soda by hand. A coolness spreads, but it doesn't come from the lemon.
The little peppermint bush catches my eye next. Rich dark green, boldly veined leaves, jaggedly edged, it also offers me a leaf. Immediately, the anticipated coolness intensifies, wrapping around my lemony hands; I automatically breathe in and feel free for the expected warmth of this day.
The scent of the leaves is underpinned, a layer of fresh fruits pushes to the forefront, a very bright melody. White flowers, yes, but it’s not just the jasmine bush blooming on this summer morning. A hint of freesia from next door? I can't quite place it, and this floral note remains consistently lemony and minty.
After a few minutes with this wonderful scent mix, I am ready for breakfast and head back into the house. I chop up some fruits. There's a mango, orange segments, maybe a bit of apple, which enhances the freshness. My nose tingles as if I had inhaled the bubbles of that minty lemon soda from earlier. No matter. It will still be hot enough today.

Clear....
L'Eau à la Folie, a summer
Over hill and dale, my shoes in hand
warm wind in my face over meadows, I want to go home.
Blooming the bushes, herbs so fine,
my gaze in the sun drives me on.
You feel the heartbeat in your throat on the way
it won't take long, I'm almost there.
I already see the water, the sea glistens in the light,
citrus trees by the wall, the spray is high.
Finally cooler, the breeze, I’ll jump right in..
here from the wall, finally home :D:D:D
A wonderful cologne, not conventional, I would rather say an Eau de Toilette
with the longevity of a cologne.
Citrusy, limey, minty, the beginning is a beautifully fizzy experience, a shudder
of the nostrils…a sneeze, a smile, oh life is beautiful.
No neroli in sight :) ))
In the middle, a mix of mango and white flowers, the freshness
completely fades here, it becomes soft, floral, and very tropical, heliotropic
fruit salad, mango-papaya on jasmine…a quirky and very skillful blend!
Once again, the scent transforms, showing in the base a wonderful mossy coolness,
moist, slightly sweet, very clear, and very elegant.
I would cheekily label it as “Cologne -Chypre” ;-) A bit like Caipirinha too.
I must say, I am more than thrilled with Folie.
The Nicolai fragrances are characterized in most cases by a great density
and very good longevity. For a cologne, at a price of 86 euros for
100ml, you have a very special, quirky summer scent that
stands out clearly from other colognes.
The scent development happens quickly, the heart note lasts about 2 hours.
The whole walk lasts 3 hours :) diligent re-spraying is encouraged!
I sense a slight resemblance to Acqua Viva by Profumum Roma.
But Viva lasts the whole summer day.
Absolutely unisex and not sexy…my 12-year-old son is also totally into the scent :D
Well, maybe a bit sexy too ;)….

Gently effervescent lime and tangy, unsweetened mango skin. Fusty animalics over creamy jasmine are the drydown's highlight.

Lively spicy freshness - a gentle breeze playing in the grass and swirling the scents around.
A base that packs a punch.

A summery fresh scent, layered with interesting spice. Overall good, but the sillage and longevity are lacking.

very fruity opening with sweet mango, under the fruity dome it becomes very clear-ethereal through juniper, gentle jasmine kisses...
