Can it get more British than this?
Even the word. Dandy. It evokes an image of this well-dressed man who wears a suit every day. Even on his days off. Even when taking a hike in the woods. With his leather shoes and his blazer. Does this perfume fit that man? I’m not sure because I’m the exact opposite and I love how fresh and fruity The Dandy is.

There’s a note of whiskey listed. I don’t know much about spirits but doing some research I’d say that it’s more of a brandy. Brandy is more fruit-forward and that’s exactly what The Dandy is. But The Dandy containing brandy.. that sounds weird right?

Anyway! The Dandy is a beautiful soury fruity cocktail that dries down ever so slightly into the beautiful woody base. Does it project? Not really. Doesn’t last not too long either. Say a couple of hours max, turns into a skinscent after that and stays that way right through the day.

Fleeting fancy, fine and…
Spray this on! Go on! All the pulse points, and a few extra areas too, let the aroma infuse the air around you.

Go on! Spray yourself with Penhaligon’s The Dandy, transport yourself to the Jazz Age.

Good gravy this could be a great scent, I would recommend it to the type of person who wants to give off an air of sophistication. With a dash of ennui

The brief for this scent must of been, a fancifully dressed aesthete, replete in a beautiful suit dazzling shirt adorned with carefully selected accessories.

And it hit the brief to the note. I can just imagine plump raspberries floating in a deep amber pool of rum? Whiskey? Whatever is all held inside an old barrel characteristically battered, beaten and old, but still robust.

I can almost hear the big band striking up, the feet moving to the dance floor and champagne corks popping….

Almost, almost, almost…all of that imagery, all of those notes. Gone by the time you’ve read this, that impression a fleeing moment in time, almost fantastically insultingly fleeting

Like a pixie fart.

Narcissus and nobody
'A dandy...' Baudelaire once wrote in his diaries '...must direct all his efforts towards being sublime without ceasing' The legendary George 'Beau' Brummell, who is still considered the archetype of the dandy today, broke with the norms of his time in an unprecedented way. He did this by rejecting the usual style borrowed from French court ceremonial on the one hand and, at the same time, by taking his personal vanities and fashionable whims to narcissistic excesses that have survived to this day, such as having the fingers and thumbs of his gloves made by different tailors. Like Beau Brummell, many Dandies were British and moved in the highest aristocratic circles. So who could be more suitable to create a perfume named Dandy than the House of Penhaligon's?

Perhaps it is expectation management.
Maybe this is where the mistake begins.
Maybe it's me.

How do I imagine a fragrance called The Dandy? Solid in essence, but still riotous. Classic, but a little provocative. Pointedly masculine and yet androgynous. Gardenia - the dandy's attribute par excellence - with leather, for example. If necessary - if the accord were not so over - rose with oud. Hyacinth with peat, violet on a fougère base - anything is possible and everything is wonderful! Instead - and the disappointment is dripping between the lines as I write them - Penhaligon's opted for the supposedly lightest, most contemporary and therefore not at all timeless answer. The fragrance they named Dandy is the essence of the early 2020s - top-heavy, synthetic and interchangeable. Not provocatively foul-smelling - not even that! - but a contourless fashion fragrance that will be forgotten in a few years.

Conclusion: citric sweetness meets man cave meets synthetics. An everlasting fragrance that is designed to please and not really exciting. And that's precisely why it's so disappointing.

The Dandy
The fragrance starts fresh and citrusy, with a strong raspberry that makes it fruity at the same time. 30 minutes later, the freshness has faded and the woody and slightly sweet tones take over (oak, patchouli and whisky are dominant). No substitute for Kilian's Angels Share!!! But for itself a successful fragrance very tasty.
Addendum: The fragrance is not modern and is classic and simply elegant in character, as the bottle suggests.

The search for a new Boozy fragrance...
... has led me to The Dandy.

First of all, I really like Penhaligon's as a house. Some fragrances are already in the collection and others have the potential to be. How about The Dandy ?!

The prelude, phew... The Dandy starts off very earthy, dusty, almost musty. I only detect a hint of whiskey in combination with wood. The Dandy resembles the smell of a stage (Swabian for attic ;)) from my parents' house.

So in short, a very austere, mature and unfashionable start. The boozy note omnipresent, but rather enigmatic.

As it progresses, a slight/decent sweetness of raspberry comes through, which makes the overall impression much more pleasant and rounded. I don't notice too much of the synthetic notes, but they generally don't bother me in other fragrances either.

To summarize, The Dandy is a good release on the subject of boozy fragrances. Personally, I find it extremely difficult to deal with the oversweet, sometimes extremely hyped boozy fragrances of the modern era. The Dandy is not like that, but I also feel it lacks that certain something, which is why it won't be a collection candidate.

The search for THE new Boozy fragrance continues.

Sharp and fruity at the top, a great woody drydown. Masculinity in a bottle.

I wanted to like this one. But it's too soft, too harmless. Strange, but reminds me of watery Lord of Misrule. The cedarwood maybe.
