Razz-Apple/Oud?
*March 9, 2025*
So I received my 50ml bottle of Alhambra Oud and upon the first few sprays made me realize how people are getting a raspberry vibe. Also, my daughter tested and she agreed that it smells like raspberries to her. Now I’m starting to believe this….maybe like a raspberry-apple blend.

It’s worth mentioning that this may be the poor man’s version of The Moon, which is one of my signature scents. Comparing them side by side, you will notice the vast difference in complexity, ingredients, strength and performance, but also notice the slight similarities IF you peel back some of the layers from The Moon. I know it’s a stretch, but Alhambra Oud is like the first few notes to build The Moon and decided to stop there and add apple plus cypriol from Promise Parfum.

Alhambra Oud is nowhere close to being multifaceted as The Moon, but if you are looking for a simplistic fruit/oud version of The Moon and a less medicinal version of Promise, this may be worthwhile.
————————————————————-Alhambra Oud | Ramón Monegal" has some similarities to Promise Parfum. Both have green apple and cypriol, but the difference lie within the amount of cypriol involved and Assam oud.

Promise Parfum has no oud and the cypriol is turned up to ten. I find it too medicinal.

Alhambra Oud has a gorgeous oud that mingles very well with the apple accord while the cypriol is at a level two. It isn’t nose piercing or sharp like the former.

Definitely will be a wearing this as much as I can.

Pleasant fruity oud
A pleasant, easy to wear fruity oud with modest performance.

The oud is slightly sour, almost yeast-like, non-animalic. The tangy apple is not the sweet sour green apple of Promise but rather like dehydrated red apple chips. Mixes wonderfully with the rose and orange blossom. Very well blended. Otherwise, kind of boring. Seems to be missing something to set it apart or pique my interest.

I get about 6” projection in the first hour settling into 3-4” thereafter. Lasts quite awhile in that range. Not as good as my Bortnikoff’s, for instance, which most are rated as moderate (~7.5/10).

It’s very good, but it’s not super great and can’t compete in the Bortnikoff and Areej le Doré space, or even Frederic Malle’s middle eastern line although those can get ridiculously expensive.

I’d be happy to add it to the collection on a steeply discounted price but it’s just not quite worth the asking price, IMO. And I’m not sure I’d ever choose to wear it over the aforementioned brands. I’d spray Promise before this every time, even though it doesn’t have oud, but I love castoreum and the castoreum note juxtaposed with that fresh, spicy, sweet, sour green apple is simply amazing. And I can’t imagine anyone familiar with Bortnikoff and AlD being very impressed with this.

For me and my collection and where I’m at, this is a pass. There’s better out there at this price point. YMMV! Cheers!

Could of been great, but good for what it is.
This on its own is a good scent. My problem is that I tested Flamenco Extrait de Parfum first and I found these scents flankers of each other. Alhambra oud starts out with what smells like real oud, accompanied by leather, smoke, and raspberry (no apple), and some ambroxian in the background. After about 3-4 hours the oud is gone and you are left with what smells like the base of flamenco extrait and traces of oud. At this point, the leather is starting to trail off along with the smoke from the birch and the ambroxian starts to become more prominent. The base turns into a fruity (raspberry) scent. It's nice for what it is but I find Flamenco extrait a lot more interesting and better performing. If I had not tried Flamenco extrait I would have a full bottle of this but Im sticking with Flamenco extrait.

The Limits of Euro-Oud
Hey everyone,

I openly and honestly admit: I am an Oud lover! That’s why I dedicate my first review after such a long period of silent reading and sampling to one of Ramon’s challenging fragrances, the Alhambra Oud.

Scent:
We are dealing here with a very distinctive (just barely) Euro-Oud that opens the fragrance and defines it until the late end (more on that below). It is the undisputed star of the scent. Right after spraying, the wood is accompanied by a zesty, rather green apple, which, however, does not smell young or sharp. Mr. Monegal prevents that with the mature Oud. In the next two to four hours, the apple gradually transforms into a rose. This step does not simply transition from 0 to 1; rather, something exciting and very skillful happens here for me. During the metamorphosis from the Rosaceae fruit to a flower, the Alhambra Oud goes through many, many facets. Always underpinned by a truly authentic Oud that is not too medically clean, but NEVER (!) animalistic. (I once read that Ramon Monegal distills his essential oils himself. My respect at this point.) Once the transformation is complete, a softer, less intense version of the perfume remains on the skin until the end. Ambroxan and birch gently embrace, intertwine, and carry the star Oud until the end, without demanding too much attention themselves. An olfactory journey passes far beyond the borders of the fortress in southern Spain.

Longevity:
Long! It accompanies you from the morning spray (or whenever) until bedtime. It is probably very independent of skin type.

Sillage:
The crux of the fragrance is that it truly (truly) performs in a room-filling manner. Good: you get a lot for your money. Bad: so do others. So be careful and think beforehand about what you plan to do with it. I would rather not take this scent on a train ride or a flight, as it is very potent. Three, at most four sprays are more than enough, and you find yourself in an oriental cloud. Even though I wear scents only for myself and for no one else, this is an act of consideration. :)

Bottle:
As expected from RM, very solid. The atomizer is certainly not at Roja level, but - honestly - does it have to be? I particularly like the hinged cap, a nice idea.

Who is this for and how is it received?
In my opinion, it is not a good scent to get to know Oud. It demands attention with its intensity; it wants to be worn and perceived consciously. I can imagine that for someone who is not yet familiar with the note, the reflex may tend to wash it off more quickly. Therefore, I would recommend it to those who want to dive deeper into the world of agarwood after a few more palatable fragrances. (I can only warmly recommend this :D) For those who want to risk their first encounters with the topic of Oud, I would definitely refer them to fragrances by Jodi Fernandez (such as Infusion Velours Eau de Parfum or "London | Widian / AJ Arabia"). The man knows how to incorporate the wood in an understandable and palatable way like no other. Also, a good entry point in the Monegal house is Agar Musk.
I perceive the scent as rather masculine, but surely anyone with a certain present attitude can wear it. I do not want to impose age restrictions. It is definitely a statement scent and not a dated one, even though it is not an oriental "stinker". The counterpart may be overwhelmed without a trained nose. I enjoy wearing the scent for myself, and my girlfriend also really likes it when I wear it.
My secret tip: Apply it for yourself on a fresh early summer Sunday morning, lie down on the terrace, and let the sun and this scent warm you up slowly.

To bring the title back into focus. For me, divisions into European and oriental Oud fragrances are more vague orientations than hard boundaries. In my eyes (or my nose, oh well whatever nevermind...) the Alhambra Oud can certainly challenge big names like Nefs in the advanced Oud segment, but feel free to form your own impression.

Enjoy the next while and see you soon...

Not for Beginners
Smells absolutely heavenly but definitely not suitable for beginners.
It opens a bit "funky" with a splash of apple. It develops into a beautiful oud scent. Oud truly takes center stage. Behind it are white flowers and in the drydown, smoky birch.

At this price, it is quite possible that real oud has been used, but who knows...

Recommended for oud lovers; beginners should probably buy a sample first.

FBW. The fruit and oud are excellent together. Possibly the poor man’s version of The Moon. Simple…

A plucky, sour apple-centric rose oud with decent projection and eternal longevity. Surprisingly light and wearable throughout the year.

Nice contrasting play with smoky, leathery oud and crisp, sparkly green apple. Reminds me little of FM Promise, but way more easier to wear

I'm not a fan of the tangy apple in the opening. However, the drydown is very pleasant with the smooth oud, white flowers and a smoky birch.

Yeasty dough, dried red apple chips. Unspiced, unsweetened. Bland. An unfinished recipe. Modest performance.

Oud in perfection. Multifaceted and shifting like a chameleon, it starts dark, then brightens with fruit & flowers. Very special.

A zesty apple at the start and floral notes make the strong rose-oud DNA feel bright and light, with birch joining in the drydown.
