c-suite sweet-tooth
If Santal 33 is the downtown extrovert, Himitsu is the uptown introvert. Wistful, worldly, just back from a writer’s residency abroad. And while you may balk at the comparison to S33, I think both fragrances cultivate that clear, bone-blond woods scent I associate with luxury furniture stores and Arch Digest-worthy artists’ lofts. I swear they pump something cousin to Himitsu into the W Hotel.

However, compared to S33, there’s more chapters to this elixir. This is an all-season pleaser, both nocturnal and diurnal. You could go straight from board meetings to violet hour cocktails with this blend. In Himitsu, refined, earthen notes like leather and suede are offset by candied violets and sassafras cola. If there’s any evocation of Japan, I’m also getting white peach gummies, like the gumdrops from Kasugai. It’s a Hermes satchel magpie-d full of sweets. Maybe that’s the secret to Himitsu.

Mental Snapshot: You’re nestled in the buttery leather of a first-class recliner on the shinkansen, orchid stormclouds blotting the dusk. You’re travelling on business. And the business is a complete and total lack of responsibilities. You’re dewy with world’s finest sheet mask (it’s a secret). You’re nursing a packet of gummy lychee. You’re the most celebrated poet of the century, but none will crack your pseudonym.

Tl;dr: c-suite sweet-tooth

are you friends with wildflowers and bluebirds?
Himitsu from Regime des Fleurs is a scent that I immediately loved and felt like it understood me, but it oddly and immediately called to mind a scent I don’t care for and which I can’t relate to…and yet on some level, they smell strangely similar. That scent I’m thinking of is Daim Blond from Serge Lutens, and its cool floral iris, expensive suede handbag, and apricot sunbeam vibes are the embodiment of someone who has it super together, they’re on a career track and probably going to make partner, they do yoga and host book clubs. I imagine they probably live in the city and they thrive in that energy and the atmosphere. I feel like Himitsu is the country mouse version of that person and they grew up with the exact opposite temperment. They live in a secluded little cottage at the edge of some remote hamlet,  and their only friends are like 25 varieties of wildflower and maybe one bluebird and they own an actual, honest-to-patchwork, ruffled Holly Hobby bonnet which they wear unironically.  They probably own a grainy recording of the Royal Ballet’s Tales of Beatrix Potter.   They smell of dew-dappled violets at dawn, lacy cotton curtains drying in a chilly October breeze, and soft leather boots that have never clicked or clacked on concrete;  they only know the quiet creeping moss and curling fern of woodland paths.

Violets, balsam, and heliotrope....
A tight cluster of bitter dark green leaves, overlaid by delicate but full-bodied violets.... This is what I wanted Oriza Legrand's Violettes du Czar to be.

The balsam and violet combination in this feels inspired by OL, exaggerating the medicinal and addictive quality of violets. Where this loses me is the heavy slug of heliotrope in the first hour.

Heliotrope is often the first and last thing I smell in anything... I don't know if I believe in "skin chemistry" but if I did, I'd say heliotrope is exacerbated on mine. I used to love it but now it's too sweet, gluggy, sickly, heavy etc. I don't like most ambers anymore, either.... The heliotrope quickly smothers the violets for me but does eventually recede.

The suede is very subtle, if you're not into leathers. It tames the powderiness somewhat, but I wonder if it amps up the heliotrope...

It's a shame as I love Himitsu from the 2nd hour onwards. I've been wearing this on cold autumn days and I can't get enough. Maybe I'll try Violettes du Czar again.

the bubblegum pop of fragrances
This is a very sweet, juicy violet that honestly reminds me of Bath and Body Works sprays -- gorgeous, but a very bold, slightly artificial fruity-floral. To me (my own subjective experience), there's something like a red currant note in there that makes the violet quite tangy. Lily of the valley is faint but helps play up the floral in the violet.

After like 2.5 hours, the suede kicks in, and the perfume starts to take on a depth that tones down the sweetness and juiciness. To be honest, I think the fragrance is at its most interesting and enjoyable when the suede starts to overpower the violet (approximately three hours in). It's still sweet and tart, but it feels more upscale and elevated. Unfortunately, this does not last long enough to justify dropping $275 on this.

To be honest, I think this fragrance is a bit puerile. Like BBW, I don't think it does anything interesting for the most part, but it still smells really nice. A very sparkly, bubbly fragrance. Maybe sometimes, a nice fruity-floral is good for the soul.

Parma Violets
Soft and dry. Sugary. Something I’d gravitate towards at bedtime but it's so clean and sweet I'd wear it during the day too. There’s something faintly artificial smelling about it (parma violets spring to mind) but it doesn’t bother me. Kind of like being given a really good hug by someone you feel ambivalent towards. The more I wear it the more I love it.

The memory of visiting a department store in the mall with my mother -- leather handbags and candy sweetness from the food court wafting in.

Florals and suede are most prominent to me, not very sweet at all. Something in it leans metallic dirty or body odor, maybe the saffron.

It’s giving Choward’s violet candy - sweet floral, a little soapy, fresh and gentle. Dry down is suede-y leather.

Floral, powdery creamy musk, a tiny hint of wild leather note, just enough for me to handle, green notes: soft and delicate.

Violet wrapped in fine soft leather. Initially slightly powdery, it becomes subtly spicy over time. Very refined, but fades quickly.

Pretty and subtle. Violets from green to sweet-powdery, a hint of heliotrope sweetness and a touch of leather. Unfortunately quite elusive.
