just wood
It’s giving wood. A forest gorge of just-felled, sap-stippled giants, somewhere between cedar and pine. Natural, raw. Fortunately, it’s not a Christmas candle spruce. I think the undercurrent of resin and amber is to thank for that. It also smells luxe. More “cozy lodge in the Rockies” than “construction section of Home Depot,” but still. Wood. To be fair, Falling Trees does it well. It does what it says on the tin.

Mental Snapshot: Freshly-lumbered timber, antique flannel, mountain mist. You're nuzzling the neck of the Brawny Man.

Tl;dr: wood

I really tried not to buy it
I thought the RDF sample card was a good value, esp with the coupon, but the price point of the full size is obstructive. I didn't like any of the others, not even a little, but I could not get enough Falling Trees. I will say, not a small bottle. Its delicious. I used the sample up and I couldn't do without it. I broke down and put it on credit. ? I think that burns my yearly perfume budget.

I just could not get it out of my head.

Smoky tree sap and pine needles
Myrrh and frankincense are often associated with religious rituals or buildings, given its prevalence in those settings. It feels remarkable that, without compromising the notes' distinctive characters, "Falling Trees" manages to nudge them in a different direction. Juniper and black pepper accentuate frankincense's piney and slightly spicy facets, while the additional warm resinous notes tame its smokiness. There's also a mossy quality to it, like a coniferous forest right after gentle rainfall.

It's dark, intriguing, and smells wonderfully natural.

On my skin, the fragrance's performance is passable. After six and a half hours, I can smell the scent within five or so centimeters of the spot on which I applied it.

Also, a quick note: they might've have changed the design of the bottle. As far as I can tell, it now matches the look of newer releases like, e.g., Nitesurf Neroli. I preferred the previous look a little bit, but I find the newer one also quite nice.

Syrupy
The initial spray is lovely, with hints of soil and beautiful pissy frankincense. But then the off-putting resinous sweetness emerges. It is not an airy sweetness built from purple florals (as in my love, CdG Zagorsk, another woody incense), but a sticky, almost candy-vanilla, like in Stora Skuggan's Pine. The overall effect is too-sweet syrup with tantalizing hints of meditative beauty.

Tree Meditation
The fire has long since gone out. The place where it burned is shrouded in peaceful early morning mist. The silence is almost audible. Autumn is already in the air, but the moss on the ground is still warm. Deep dark green it clings to the earth during the day, while tiny dew drops dance on it in the morning. The old oak offers a dry embrace. Under its caring arms, you find protection and comfort.
Juniper-smoky voices whisper gentle reassurances.
Herb-sweet resins bathe the fading scenery in a soft brown hue.
___________________________________________

Falling Trees opens with a cool, dry dance of juniper and incense, quiet and meditative. Just as softly, other resins, tree moss, and oak aromas join in, with a hint of sweetness from benzoin. But really just a hint. I mostly experience the scent as floating-smoky-woody, rather herbaceous, with an almost linear progression. For me, it is the first smoky fragrance with a slightly burnt note that comes across so delicately, as if only a faint memory of a campfire lingers in the air - or perhaps in the hair. Somewhere in the periphery. The image of an old, calm, and cozy protective forest comes to mind. Not gloomy, rather gray-golden.

On an American retailer's website, there is a reference to a quote by Peter Wohlleben, a forester and author who has long been engaged with the secrets and wonders of the forest and advocates for ecologically and economically sustainable forestry. Since I am not familiar with the exact text, I allow myself to quote an excerpt from a book description:

“Amazing things happen in the forest: Trees that communicate with each other. Trees that lovingly care for and nurture their offspring, as well as old and sick neighbors. Trees that have sensations, feelings, a memory.” (The Hidden Life of Trees, Peter Wohlleben)

Falling Trees is like an invitation to partake in this. A random 10 for me.

With heartfelt thanks to Vinyldates.

Big Meh. Soft slightly pissy generic resinous wood. Inoffensive. Unexceptional. Unisex.

Through light spicy smoke, the oak leaves sail down weightlessly,
softly resinous, soulful,
nestled cool & warm in soft moss.
