Stinky spa
This smells like one of those “healing” clay pore masks made out of volcanic ash and tea tree oil. Specifically, the kind that make you feel like your skin is peeling off your face like a slice of ham when you wash it off with warm water.

This also smells like someone brushed their teeth really well (tongue and all!), ate all the expensive creams and skin rejuvenation masks in a rich-people spa, and then breathed right in your face. I credit that to the musk in the base.

You can argue that this is unisex or that it redefines masculinity or femininity, but really it just smells like some bitter aromatic herb poultice that you would dab on your wrist to help you calm down before bed so you don’t get a sleep paralysis attack. It smells like the kind of rich people who go on spiritual journeys and write poetry while their parents are wanted for their role in destabilizing Latin American countries. My point is, this is devoid of gender and sexuality entirely. This will just make you smell like a fancy paste.

In conclusion, this is an okay perfume, but an even better home fragrance. Thank you for your time.

ex-equestrian
I actually ordered a sampler over a year ago, but despite its resume being perfect on paper, it wasn’t a perfect fit. RRM is more stereotypically cologne-y than I typically like. The (what I can only assume is) ivy is the dominant note. Imagine Irish Spring soap, only minus the soap. Despite being named after a horse, there’s nothing animalic. He’s clean, green, dark, dewy. The memory of fields and forests and saddle leather, but without the dirt under the nails. A cologne for horse boys who don't like to get muddy. (Dressage boys?)

Mental Snapshot: Hunter green velvet walls, polished mahogany. Billiard tables, oil paintings of champion Thoroughbreds. Investment bankers in foxhunting jackets.

tl;dr: for ex-equestrians

A babbling brook
Ivy is underrated note and it’s featured well here with galbanum and wet leaves. The opening is a fresh green stream, some faint crocuses of early spring that starts to sing and….disappears into light pencil shavings (the wood here has a hint of graphite, perhaps the “rock” alluded to in the name).

And then it’s over in an hour.

If it was bolder and made more of a statement before all hints of foliage vanished I could forgive it more. But it’s frustratingly just a “nice” ivy scent that has no idea what to do before it gives up altogether.

American Pie
I would have thought this perfume was a women's perfume from the 70s. At the beginning, it even has the concentrated floral opulence of even older perfumes. I can't identify narcissus, I would have guessed something waxy like tuberose or gardenia, but here we have a heavy, unspecific mixture of white flowers, albeit free of any indolence. But it quickly becomes more playful, more natural and more individual thanks to the addition of more bitter, green notes, citrus and resins (I also sense incense).

As the fragrance progresses, it initially appears spicier. I can clearly smell white pepper. This is really something new in this environment! After a few hours, it becomes more powdery and creamy - musk and sandalwood. Such an amber-musk-sandalwood drydown is certainly not original, but the patchouli in the amber (at least that's my guess) brings back the 70s associations.

Apart from the fact that the fragrance is beautiful on a cursory sniff, it is always interesting and lively on closer analysis. There is a little surprise every now and then: for example, the bergamot makes itself known to me again after a few hours, and the transition to the drydown takes place two steps forward, one step back for a while.

The sillage is - after the initial explosion - pleasant: you can clearly smell it, but it is not intrusive. The longevity is normal. The remains of the fragrance can be detected on the skin for quite a long time, but after about 5 hours I only smell powdered wood.

So: a tart, peppery floral cream on powdery, resinous and woody amber. A harmonious progression, classic appeal, but not retro. A real discovery! Thank you Rebecca!

It's almost funny that Rock River Melody is not even marketed as unisex, but directly as a men's fragrance. That only reveals bad things about the current state of women's perfumery ;-)

Oh yes, the headline: I associate this song from 1971 with nostalgia and freedom, boho and flower power. It is a musical farewell letter to a time full of dreams, rebellion and love. That's why I think it goes well with the perfume.

Rather than a rock river melody, this is a brook that hums a little, unable to find a tune, and exits abruptly.
