Dutch Perfection
Whoever wanders through Germany's dreary city centers cannot escape Rituals. With immense market and marketing power, these eye-catching glossy stores from the Netherlands now seem to be everywhere, especially where you least want them. Exemplarily perfect choreography: perfect lighting, lots of perfect wood, perfect store scent, perfect interior design, perfect color coordination, perfect marketing concepts. If you ask me, it's all just too oppressively perfect. I should know, as I conducted numerous test purchases there for an agency last year in stores in and around Düsseldorf, and I feel like I know their whole gimmick inside out. But the concept of shiny pseudo-ethno kitsch (Asian touch, bamboo, stones, trickling water basins) works, even if it sometimes comes across as rather contrived and silly (especially for the male target audience), to the point where even the saleswoman on site had to chuckle at the slight absurdity of the target group marketing. Well.

Okay, I do tend to nitpick more than necessary - but I must admit that I don't find Rituals unsympathetic, because what would be the exact opposite? A run-of-the-mill perfumery XYZ, whose highest feelings are the usual designer offerings? No, I'd rather have Rituals as a change, whose scents are often decent, even if mostly not outstanding. At least the bottles look magnificent with their wooden caps, and the once again color-coordinated presentation certainly leaves no shabby impression.

A randomly discovered standout is "Serendipity for Men," which is currently being sold for just 9 euros in a small travel size. Even in the store (this time casually without sneaky test purchase ambitions), my eyes lit up: something is happening here, here and now in the perfectly styled store, the fish is biting the hook. Lots of interesting spicy notes, incredibly dense. Plus, there's incense in the supporting foundation, albeit interpreted in a very modern way. Although it leaves a rather heavy, almost Arabic impression, I would wear it effortlessly in the sultry evening heat. Open fluttering shirt, on the sand dunes of the paradise beach at the Düsseldorf Rhine bend. Grilling, Aperol spritz, sweat notes. It also leaves a somewhat synthetic-woody impression, probably Ambroxan, but very subtle. Its longevity is above average, and the progression is rather nonlinear: something is happening on the skin! Yes, it neither feels cheap nor playful, rather for the serious 40-plus crowd. As a blind gift, it's definitely suitable.

"Serendipity for Men" is the classic example that even average providers can occasionally reel in pretty things. This is probably the most exciting aspect for any cheapie hunter. Thank you, Rituals.

The Power of Rituals
The ritual "Serendipity" is a limited edition, the scent of which I first experienced a few days ago at my sister's place. It comes in the form of a body cream.
The fragrance immediately piqued my curiosity, which led me to pay attention to this ritual.

In the meantime, I own the perfume and am a big fan of it.
From my perspective, Rituals has really hit the mark with this one.

The scent actually starts with a very harmonious almond note, before some earthy-woody components join in a very subtle manner.
It is enveloped by a rather potent and dominant chypre cloud, which is not explicitly definable, at least not for me and my nose.

The fragrance feels very coherent, a green-harmonious chypre that is also quite elegant in parts.
Consequently, it is very suitable for me in the evening, but it will also find its use in business. Except for the height of summer, I find the scent versatile.

I am almost certain that if this fragrance were sold by a popular niche house, it would find some admirers. As it stands, it will naturally have little chance among the sometimes consistently niche-oriented fragrance romantics - what a shame!

By the way, this scent has an initially very strong sillage. For the first two hours, it radiates very potently, before becoming a bit quieter and more reasonable, which does not mean it lacks endurance.

Serendipity has completely convinced me!

Seduction on the Second Sniff
Well, once again a scent from the category first neyy then heyy...
To be honest, I could hardly perceive the fragrance in the store (apparently the staff has recently started spraying it under small vials...I really can't smell anything). So I sprayed a sample on my wrist and tried again.

Puhhh, I have no idea what this is supposed to be but I don't find it good...or maybe I do? What does it smell like again? I just can't place it...oh wait, yes, I can...needlewood. After a few minutes, the initial 'shock' faded and what remained was a dominant scent of fir. Okay, now I understood why it is the winter edition. It smells like a Christmas tree. In a penetrating but still not unpleasant way. It's actually not really my type, but it smells so wonderfully like the ointment my doctor once prescribed to me...no seriously, it also smells like fir and I love it. So I ended up packing at least the travel size, since the scent is supposed to be gone from the store soon and I also don't know when I will really use it next. Probably at Christmas.

Greetings from your Christmas tree.

Dutch Soap Shop or Haute Parfumerie?
Well, I have finally arrived at some Rituals scents. After several visits to the always quite intensely scented shops, I couldn't help but finally sniff a few of the fragrances and see what awaits me here. My expectations were at least not extremely high.
I don't know how you feel about it, but I always have a queasy feeling with inexpensive or cheap-smelling fragrances, usually coming with the expectation that there won't be anything exciting to find. Especially considering how it all affects me. One must say, Rituals does deal with scent experiences, regardless of the form. However, when I perceive the main products as body care and room fragrances in the store, I inevitably get the feeling that this is done half-heartedly and not with actual passion.

Well then, after testing three fragrances, I decided to purchase the travel spray of the limited Serendipity for Men, and that was only after one spray. The previous opinions here on Parfumo sounded quite exciting, and the women's scent had already made a good impression. However, the men's scent was supposed to go in a completely different direction, as I found the women's scent to be very wearable for summer, especially due to the white floral base note.

As others have already mentioned, the scent at the start is very reminiscent of the Guerlain L'Homme Ideal line. The delicate sweetness from creamy almond comes through nicely, and there are already signs of a good fragrance and a more sophisticated scent composition. Unfortunately, the almond note fades a bit too quickly in my opinion. Sweet, warm earthy tones then develop, somewhat reminiscent of oak moss and patchouli. An interesting accord that can seem somewhat dull due to a certain spiciness, yet gradually fits into the picture. This accord lasts well for about two hours and releases its aromas. Once it starts to fade a bit, more woody notes and spice come through, underscored by minimal sweetness. Since many fragrances use woody notes as a base to extend longevity, the base might seem familiar to some.

The longevity is quite good for the price, although only to a limited extent for oneself, but others around you can smell the fragrance for at least five to six hours. I wouldn't wear the scent in winter as promoted by the saleswomen, as the notes are suppressed too quickly by the cold temperatures, but rather in spring and autumn. The sillage could be a bit better; it radiates well in the first two hours, but then quickly diminishes.

After testing now four Rituals fragrances, I can say that I have been quite positively surprised by how good the scents I sprayed smelled. Nevertheless, most of them don't break new ground and rank more in the area of better mediocrity.

An Oriental Beginner's Fragrance
A big thank you to my best friend Agron for the sample of Serendipity for Men :-) This is a really well-made fragrance that can be tested by "beginners" who are still quite inexperienced with oriental scents. The longevity is solid at about 6 hours, and the sillage is in the medium range.

The top note starts quite powdery and green with spicy hints of cardamom. Almond milk provides creamy nuances. The heart note has a fine smoky scent of incense, myrrh, and opoponax. The base offers woody and balsamic nuances of sandalwood. Here, pine resin and a Christmas-like, cinnamon, as well as sweet aroma, also resonate.

My best friend said he likes this as an "everyday fragrance." I think he is quite right; it is indeed quite pleasant and not as heavy as the fragrance notes might suggest.

Reminds me of scents from the 80s. Woody, spicy, green earthy, with a subtle sweetness. Needs to be tested again.

Initially strong and spicy, then green and almondy, woody and relatively unsweet, cashmeran-like. Not particularly bitter, but quite soft and pleasant.

Great blend of incense and fragrance sticks with a rounding vanilla. Nothing exciting, but a perfect starter oriental. Top!

A little surprise: incense, dry woody with distinct summery heat-earth notes. Well composed, dense, with a hint of oriental.

Fateful affair of Rammstein Black Intense and Guerlain L'Homme Ideal

Definitely a clone of Guerlain L'Homme Idéal L'Intense and not made any worse! Spicy, sweet, earthy, and a bit smoky. Chapeau!

A variation of L'Homme Ideal. Soft almond at the start, transitioning into an earthy accord. A bit of chypre, more earth - interesting!

It really does remind me of the Ideal line from Guerlain. A very spicy and beautiful scent for fall and winter. Performance is rather average.
