Dutch Perfection
Whoever wanders through Germany's dreary city centers cannot escape Rituals. With immense market and marketing power, these eye-catching glossy stores from the Netherlands now seem to be everywhere, especially where you least want them. Exemplarily perfect choreography: perfect lighting, lots of perfect wood, perfect store scent, perfect interior design, perfect color coordination, perfect marketing concepts. If you ask me, it's all just too oppressively perfect. I should know, as I conducted numerous test purchases there for an agency last year in stores in and around Düsseldorf, and I feel like I know their whole gimmick inside out. But the concept of shiny pseudo-ethno kitsch (Asian touch, bamboo, stones, trickling water basins) works, even if it sometimes comes across as rather contrived and silly (especially for the male target audience), to the point where even the saleswoman on site had to chuckle at the slight absurdity of the target group marketing. Well.
Okay, I do tend to nitpick more than necessary - but I must admit that I don't find Rituals unsympathetic, because what would be the exact opposite? A run-of-the-mill perfumery XYZ, whose highest feelings are the usual designer offerings? No, I'd rather have Rituals as a change, whose scents are often decent, even if mostly not outstanding. At least the bottles look magnificent with their wooden caps, and the once again color-coordinated presentation certainly leaves no shabby impression.
A randomly discovered standout is "Serendipity for Men," which is currently being sold for just 9 euros in a small travel size. Even in the store (this time casually without sneaky test purchase ambitions), my eyes lit up: something is happening here, here and now in the perfectly styled store, the fish is biting the hook. Lots of interesting spicy notes, incredibly dense. Plus, there's incense in the supporting foundation, albeit interpreted in a very modern way. Although it leaves a rather heavy, almost Arabic impression, I would wear it effortlessly in the sultry evening heat. Open fluttering shirt, on the sand dunes of the paradise beach at the Düsseldorf Rhine bend. Grilling, Aperol spritz, sweat notes. It also leaves a somewhat synthetic-woody impression, probably Ambroxan, but very subtle. Its longevity is above average, and the progression is rather nonlinear: something is happening on the skin! Yes, it neither feels cheap nor playful, rather for the serious 40-plus crowd. As a blind gift, it's definitely suitable.
"Serendipity for Men" is the classic example that even average providers can occasionally reel in pretty things. This is probably the most exciting aspect for any cheapie hunter. Thank you, Rituals.
