You will be missed
While I love the original Black Opium for the powerful, sexy, yet approachable vanilla-jasmine-coffee bomb that it is (those are three of my favorite notes, after all, so of course I love it), it never felt like "me." Illicit Green does. It's still powerful and sexy, but it's also bright and a little bit playful and fun. The fig-pear combo is so juicy, fresh, and sweet. I was so sad to see this discontinued, and right after I ran out of my last bottle! It was one of the last designer perfumes I had in my collection. I'll keep trying the newer additions to the line as they come out but I doubt anything will ever beat this for me.

Pulpy and creamy fig
Illicit Green starts out lighter and cleaner, in my opinion, versus the original Black Opium EDP. With that, the opening has always felt pretty messy, especially compared to this.

Here, I get the green mandarin note, some of the pear. But, what really comes through from the jump is the fig/fig leaf. This opens greenish, somewhat fruity, with plenty of the coffee note already peaking through.

Really, the pear and mandarin are adding a sparkling brightness to the mix and some sweetness. However, those two note are never particularly massive on my skin.

I dig its freshness and its less heavy and cloying than many of the others in this Saint Laurent series.

As we move along, the fruitiness that is there will tone down. You will get more of the vanilla and coffee that the original has. For me, the coffee is the stronger of the two throughout.

That, with: fig, jasmine, orange blossom and some patchouli.

The final dry down is a light coffee aroma, with the vanilla, and what’s left of that fig and jasmine note. Kind of sweet, soft, with a bit of a powdery feel to it all.

Illicit Green
Fig, coffee, jasmine, vanilla. Very green and almost sour in the initial spray, which then settles down into the regular black opium DNA. It’s perhaps slightly fruitier/fresher than the original, but not by a lot. It’s very smooth and creamy, but also quite deep and dense, so not a scent I’d reach for in summer. Absolutely perfect for winter, though. The fig is luscious.

Disappointing
Initial spray is pure greens and citrus, enough to give you a headache. Then dries down to a spicy, zesty mixture, and finally fades into a warm, woody patchouli.

I don't know how this is marketed as a sweet gourmand perfume, as I am getting no sweetness from this. It's just very...green. Definitely prefer the original Black Opium.

Mindful in the Café
My collector's heart has been eager since the first sight of this new offshoot of Black Opium: would I want to let one of those brightly green-windowed bottles into my collection?
BO is not my fragrance direction, on the other hand, I love green bottles, and the prospect of a version of this bestseller in "my" color awakens desire. Moreover, I am just starting to tolerate vanilla scents, to engage with them.
Sunday morning wellness after too hot a bath. Sprayed 2x from the manufacturer sample onto my décolletage. It almost knocks me over and fascinates me at the same time.
Sweet, so sweet that it clings to the nose with a fruity, jam-like maltol quality.
Heavy, heavy due to the vanilla in the base, dense, hits hard, for the evening, for cold, winter, outdoors, and young people.
But also fascinating. Again and again, my nose catches the more bitter coffee aromas. I love drinking coffee. Always black, only with sugar in espresso.
The image of a pastry shop visit comes to mind. On my plate, a large piece of cake with a cup of coffee. At least three layers of light buttercream and a fruity jam layer. Rarely enjoyed a feast. In mouth and nose, the aromas unite yet remain distinct.
The buttercream dominates both the scent of the lavish bouquet before me and the jam layer. I can't identify what else the cream has been flavored with, but it tastes fine, not cheap.
Good thing I ordered at least a small pot instead of the usual 150ml cup of coffee. Free refills would be great.
After the first overindulgent bites, I enjoy the cake in many small forkfuls gradually. Always mindfully setting it down and sipping the coffee. Delicious.
In this way, I later perceive the flowers in the room better. A feeling of well-being sets in. Mmh, a sensual, long-lasting enjoyment. How nice that the fine aromas still linger in my nose for many hours after the initial cake orgy.

The short test is enough; I am already looking for occasions where I would feel so well perfumed.
I think of all the pandemic-related canceled or rarely visited social outdoor events in the cold season: fair, stadium, Christmas shopping. Christmas market. Cabbage tour.
I could easily justify a sweet 30ml bottle to myself.

Coffee, green orange, & fig; green but not so much illicit as Christmasy. GORGEOUS Christmasy. Both new & nostalgic, formal & welcoming.

Coffee and fig dominate this fragrance and gives it a coffee shop vibe. Effectively the original Black Opium, without the strong florals.

Lighter, fresher than the original and really delicious, this flanker is a hit to me! The only downside is its poor longevity.

The "funnest" of the line. Uplifting, fruity, eternal on my skin. My favorite of all the Black Opiums. Unfortunately discontinued.

Hipster coffee shop vibes...one of those cafes with lots of plants, and vegan/gluten-free options.

Powerful and sexy, but also bright and playful and fun. The fig-pear combo is so juicy, fresh, and sweet.
