As a cherry + Black Opium hater, I’m loving this one!
What a pleasant surprise this flanker of Black Opium has been to me! To preface, I’m an avid cherry hater (only because it usually smells very medicinal to/on me) and I don’t love coffee notes in my fragrance. BO is a fragrance that I’ve always found to be too sweet, cloying, and kind of annoying. So when I heard this flanker was coming out, I totally disregarded it. However, I got a surprise sample of it and immediately fell in love after just one wear. This Over Red flanker has done something for me that none of the other flankers have and I’m pretty excited about it.

The BO DNA is there at about 95%, but the added cherry just fits perfectly in with the vanilla-coffee-white floral staple that BO is. The “green” flanker felt a bit weird (wasn’t a fan of fig mixed with those notes), the Le Parfum was cute but just had more vanilla, but this one has uncovered a new appreciation for cherry notes for me. The cherry isn’t overpowering, but it’s not the most prominent note in the composition either. It sits perfectly atop the OG DNA and provides a gentle syrupy bite to an already sweet scent. I also feel like it helps to darken the coffee note a bit without making it louder and does give the scent a “red” aura. It’s so sexy, delicious, and fun, but also very wearable and kind of “grown-up” feeling.

Performance-wise, it’s comparable to all the other BOs, so moderate to good longevity with a fairly good projection. I think it’s best for cool weather wear, but the pop of cherry gives it a cheekiness that could make it appropriate for spring and summer nights as well. To me, this is the best and most well thought out Black Opium flanker, and I’m happy to have given it a chance.

sticky coffee cherry tart
dark, sticky and not at all cloying like other cherry fragrances. the coffee is prominent but not overpowering. this is not a coffee fragrance. the sweet, creamy cherry is the star of the show. completely gorgeous and the only good Opium flanker. if you could own only one cherry fragrance, let it be this one.

A cherry powder bomb!
Opium Over Red is a lovely, inviting and unique scent. I don’t think I’ve ever smelt anything quite like this. I get the mandarin in the beginning which I didn’t enjoy but it does disappear. I don’t smell any coffee, tea or jasmine at all, at least that I can identify, This to me is like a creamy vanilla pudding that has a little strawberry and cherry puree mixed through it, with some powdery, pink marshmallows sprinkled on top. In fact I think a more accurate description of this scent would be if you were to take a bag of Barrett “Flumps” (the pink and white twisty marshmallows) burst it open and stick your head in it. To me that’s near enough this exact smell. The scent bubble this creates is very comforting and relaxing, like a big fluffy cloud. This could easily be worn all year round in cool temperatures.

While I enjoy the scent, I just can’t wear it as it’s just too much for me. I like powdery scents but this is powder overload and a little nauseating sadly. I chose Simona Andreoli’s Vicebomb over this which is similar but a much easier wear, for me anyway.

A Bold Venture into YSL Black Opium Over Red
This marks my debut into the Black Opium collection, having previously only delved into the classical Opium by YSL. The allure of the Black Opium Over Red caught my attention, prompting a blind buy driven by its promise of a cherry-centric fragrance without the common tonka beans or almond notes. And girl, am I delighted with my decision!

The fragrance opens with an intense burst, asserting its identity as a bold cherry-infused perfume. Picture cherries enveloped in cream with a subtle smoky undertone – it's a unique olfactory experience. While distinct from Tom Ford's Lost Cherry, it shares a certain intriguing similarity. I've noticed parallels with cherry scents from Banana Republic and Kayali too.

What sets Black Opium Over Red apart is the inclusion of black tea and coffee notes, adding a zesty and bitter edge that I find quite appealing. The result is a concoction that exudes sophistication and uniqueness. It's a fragrance that commands attention and makes a statement.

If you enjoy cherry-centric perfumes with a twist, this could be your next go-to. I encourage you to try it and share your thoughts in the comments. I'm eager to hear fellow fragrance enthusiasts' reviews and experiences with this captivating addition to the Black Opium line. Cheers to exploring new olfactory horizons!

Just a cherry on top?
As a big Black Opium fan and apologist, I have tried all the flankers. And I have to admit that some of them are pretty uncreative and way too close to the original. But this is a good one! Recognizably Black Opium, but with enough differences to justify owning both.

It's basically the sweetened coffee from the original with a richer vanilla base that makes it similar to the Le Parfum flanker (which is also great). Besides that, there is a generous dose of juicy cherry and jasmine. While the original has a more general floral accord, this one has a more defined jasmine note that comes across as sweet, creamy and even a bit bubblegum-ish. It lends a new textural aspect to the scent, which in my opinion is just as important as the addition of cherry.

This is a playful scent that would be perfect for evening and nighttime wear. It's very sweet and girly, but smoother and more rounded than the original EDP. Maybe because the cool pear note is missing and got replaced by warmer, creamier notes.
It's also a great take on cherry for gourmand lovers who are tired of the myriads of Lost Cherry clones.

In my opinion the whole is more than the sum of its parts here. One could think that Over Red is just Black Opium or Blacl Opium Le Parfum with a little cherry on top and the same effect could be achieved with layering, but I don't think you'd get the same result. I actually tried it with a sample of Le Parfum and Lost Cherry, and while also very nice, it's different.
I might add this to my collection.

Where is the cherry?? All I’m getting is a muddled artificial vanilla. Drydown is similar to Black Opium Le Parfum.

The cherry faded too quickly down to a generic vanilla. Go for any other black opium.

The drydown smells like a fruity dark chocolate for me.

My perfect Black Opium! Smoother than the original and Le Parfum, as it lacks the spice. Addictive vanilla cherry latte drydown.

One of my fave designer scents. It has notes I normally don’t go for but they all work beautifully together. Wish the coffee was stronger

Cherry tootsie roll pop drying down to OG Black Opium. Still on my skin after 10 hours. Love this.

I just really wish the initial spritz of cherry would stick around more in this. After it dries the coffee scent really comes out.

Deliciously sweet cherries and coffee that smells divine on my skin. It's so rich and mature, but not overpowering at all.
