Hinoki - The forest with a difference
Hinoki...what is that anyway?
This was the first question on my mind when I first laid eyes on this fragrance during an exchange offer.
I found the name and bottle immediately appealing, and a glance at the fragrance pyramid did not diminish my interest in this previously unknown fragrance.
Only the Georgywood I looked at with a somewhat skeptical eye, but I decided to make an exchange and welcomed the bottle a few days later.
But what is Hinoki?
This is a Japanese precious wood, which is obtained from the false cypress.
This cypress is one of the five sacred trees of Japan.
This list presumably stems from the fact that the wood for the temples and shrines of Japanese culture was mostly obtained from these five trees.
However, there are sometimes differing opinions as to which 5 trees belong exactly to this list.
Anyway, as I said, I like the name, the bottle and also the following sentence, which is part of the fragrance description. Quoted below:
"Cigarette smoke inhaled while we make love, somewhere in the Hinoki forest."
My nose doesn't quite fit this kind of description, but for me it is still an outstandingly beautiful fragrance that I will definitely keep.
I don't detect cigarette smoke, or anything smoky at all.
I get a green, fresh and slightly woody fragrance here.
The green branches show a very fine side here. It is not uncommon for the needle-obsessed wood towers to have this woody note, but often paired with distinctly sweet components. It is precisely for this reason that some fragrances in this category have already moved out again.
Hinoki-Shower is exactly to my taste. Because this woody, green pine is combined here with a potent and clearly perceptible fresh note.
Yes, it is a little synthetic at times, but it is never distracting or overpowering.
The camphor probably also plays a not insignificant role here.
Even if you don't get its classic spiciness here, it certainly provides that freshness kick.
Vetiver and moss form a perfectly coordinated base for this.
Tobacco plays almost no role for me here.
All in all, a wonderfully refreshing, woody, slightly synthetic green scent with moderate staying power and a soft silage.
The spray is very pleasant, it nebulizes exceptionally finely in my view and perhaps symbolizes a little the calm, fine and rather reserved culture of Japan.
Hinoki? You are mine!
