When I spotted the news about this new fragrance a few weeks ago, I could hardly believe it: Another scent twin of a very well-known niche fragrance, this time affordable for everyone at the drugstore around the corner. Its predecessor divides the community for various reasons like hardly any other perfume, and I would count myself among its loyal lovers and truly appreciate it. But even though I like to invest a bit more money in perfume, I certainly don’t complain when there are alternatives that give my wallet a little break. So it was clear to me: I had to test Belle Icone.

Said and done. Even before there were any entries here on Parfümo, or it was listed on the official Caline website, I found it and excitedly sprayed it directly onto my wrist. My eyes grew wider. "Yes, this is the BR540 DNA. But there’s more!" I thought to myself. Since you can’t really form a proper judgment with a hearty sprayer in the perfume department, the fragrance quickly flew into the shopping basket and was extensively tested at home.

The familiar woody-sweet synthetic immediately rises to the nose, but with a twist that clearly distinguishes it from BR540. It is a bit cooler, more crystalline, almost even a little "ethereal" in the outdated sense, so very clear and not always easy to grasp. Similar to its predecessor, there are moments when I become a bit olfactorily blind, but then it comes back to my nose after breaks and simply smells beautiful. In my opinion, the perfume does not undergo drastic developments, but especially towards the base note, it becomes a bit more balsamic and warmer than before. It leans more towards a feminine direction, without losing the unisex character that this fragrance group inherently possesses, in my opinion. I don’t smell any strawberry, or any fruit at all, but there is definitely more in here than the fragrance pyramid suggests.

What was initially supposed to be a small test has now developed into a realization that many may not want to hear, but I find this perfume better than all other scent twins, and even better than the original itself. After just a few weeks, I have used up half of the bottle - The perfume is in constant use. I love love love this scent and really can’t imagine being without it.

Does Belle Icone reinvent the wheel? No. Those who don’t like BR540 and its ilk probably (!) won’t like this either. If you don’t like saffron and synthetic notes, you’re in the wrong place. But for everyone else? Just give it a try. In the end, you don’t even have to take out a loan for a bottle.

BR540 for the Price of a Döner

My girlfriend (who isn't really into perfumes) the other day at Rossmann: "by the way, there's supposed to be a new scent that smells like one of those expensive things".. okay.. I'm curious.. and when I saw the bottle, it was immediately clear what "the expensive thing" was supposed to be.. red label with golden writing.. it can only be another dupe of BR540.. but for just under 6€.. what could it possibly do.. sprayed it on and I almost fell over.. it smells just like the BR but without that unpleasant dentist office vibe at the beginning..
Well, what could I do.. I bought it for my girlfriend right away.. of course only for her..... I didn't want it at all...... ;)
As already mentioned, the Belle Icone is really very similar to the original! just without the initial side effect as if I were at a dental prophylaxis appointment.
I don't want to say much more about the individual notes.. it's just as sweet as the original but somehow almost more pleasant.. definitely a blind buy for anyone who likes BR540!
I don't know how they manage to offer a glass bottle (okay, it's not really high quality), along with packaging and 60 ml of content for 5.99€, that smells so outrageously good.
Longevity and sillage are also quite good for the price.. of course, you can't expect it to last as long as the almost 40 times more expensive original.. but who cares.. I'll just spray a few more times :) so... my girlfriend, of course..

When searching for soap and shampoo, I always have to walk past the fragrance shelves. It could be that a scent is calling out to me and wants to come to me. I don't care whether it's a budget item or a high-priced product. We need to become friends, and that's important to me.

At DM, I found a newcomer in the budget shelf. Tester available, but no product. Since I have always had good experiences with Câline, I took a closer look at the bottle. Ups... the flacon clearly indicates which direction the scent is going. Dark red label with gold, that's a hint at BR. So, another dupe on the shelves. Great. There are already 1001 of those. However, I have my difficulties with the original. I'm also not willing to spend so much money on a scent that I don't really warm up to.

Testing doesn't hurt, so I can join the conversation and tear the scent apart. It didn't matter that I couldn't buy it. I generously sprayed a hefty amount on my wrist. If I'm going to test it, I wanted to do it right. ;)

The beginning made me gasp. Yuck... it smelled just like at my dentist's. No thanks. I actually like the woman personally. Whoa... suddenly strawberries appeared. Delicious, I like those. Too early to celebrate, as a rubber smell joined in. Memories of a rubber factory in my city from the 70s came to mind. I was already tearing it apart in my head on the way to the cash register. But what a transformation the scent had undergone by then. The synthetic and rubber tire scent was gone. Sweet like strawberries, slightly fruity, then creamy and floral-spicy all of a sudden.

While I was packing my purchases, the scent unfolded much of its charm, and I went back into the store. A paper tissue generously sprayed with the scent was stored in a plastic bag because I wanted to have that fragrance. If not as a flacon immediately, then at least until it is back in stock.

But the scent showed its full potential later. Smoky notes were added. Not burnt and not unpleasant, but like a campfire. Suddenly, the scent reminded me of my uncle, who introduced me to the world of fragrances a long time ago. Not that I want to smell like my uncle, but the smoky note makes the scent unisex.

Longevity for the price of 6 euros is 4 hours and 6 hours on the skin. You can't complain about that.

The resemblance to BR is there, but Icone is an independent scent that has its own charm and has the potential to become an icon. At least for me. Soon I will have it, as my daughter is randomly ordering something at DM today.

Câline and the Rescue of the Cotton Candy Seller

A little BR540 critique at the beginning:
Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum is one of those scents that my body inevitably reacts to with a wrinkled nose. Musty vibes from a splash of barbecue sauce in synthetic cough syrup, somewhere in a hospital operating room, where a cotton candy seller from the fair has gotten lost. Interesting, but by no means great. Most dupes are just poorly made and only intensify my aversion to the scent. In my opinion, there are people for whom the scent truly fits, and with whom it harmonizes perfectly with their overall image, becoming a delight. But those are very, very few, and yet half the world sprays it on, and not exactly hesitantly, which further leads to the loss of any "magic." (Regardless of my opinion, of course, everyone should spray what they like - tastes differ, and that's a good thing).

Now to the scent:
So there I was a few months ago in my favorite drugstore. A new scent from Câline? I could already guess what it was from the label, but I was still curious and sprayed it on my wrist.

Contrary to my expectations - no flight instinct.

Fascinating... it is extremely close to the original, yet the small nuances are somehow better balanced... it smells almost more high-quality to me. A scent deviation?

I keep sniffing my wrist. I still wouldn’t really wear "Belle Icône | Câline," it’s too close to the original. And yet it makes the small details feel better to me. The cotton candy seller is no longer lost in the operating room. This time he is selling his cotton candy at the fair outdoors, in front of an operating room, along with candied strawberries, whose sugar crust looks so beautifully shiny. The medical notes are a bit less intense and constricting, the woody and spicy notes are no longer so synthetic and don’t remind me of barbecue sauce, but ensure that it’s not just a pure fairground scent. It is softer and rounder, a bit sweeter, but with a nicer sweetness than the original. And yet it is unmistakably BR540, strikingly similar.

Again and again, a cloud of the scent wafts into my nose, even hours later. And somehow I like it. Even the next day, it is still perceptible on my skin. A €6 scent. Simply amazing. I went to the drugstore a few more times in the following weeks, and each time I couldn’t help but apply another spray and marvel. I decided to buy it after all; somehow it had charmed me... just to wear a spray at home every now and then, a scent for €6, why not.

Too late, it was already sold out everywhere, the hype had begun.

In the meantime, it has also found a place with me. For the money, it’s simply a blast. The bottle is pretty to look at, but correspondingly cheaply made, the spray heads can unfortunately, as is often the case in this price segment, be faulty at times with Câline. Nevertheless - I give my good rating DESPITE my aversion to the original, and although I still believe that the scent does not suit everyone, nor does this dupe, and that it can quickly reach a "too much of a good thing" point. Simply because it is an incredibly well-done clone, especially for the price. I absolutely cannot confirm the reviews that mention poor longevity and sillage - perhaps there was a faulty batch in between? I have sprayed it easily 10 times from different testers, and each time the longevity was 6-8 hours with good sillage, even close to the skin until the next day, with only 1-2 sprays. It definitely doesn’t suit me, and will at most be sprayed on my wrist at home - but then enjoyed.

Does there need to be another BR clone? Yes!

Today I happened to look for whether Caline - after I was particularly excited about the le Male dupe - has new dupes that I can test; and lo and behold: another BR dupe. I already have a BR dupe from an Arab brand, but this dupe was significantly more expensive, allowing me to compare the two. I immediately ran to DM and found it :)
At first glance, the BR DNA is immediately noticeable in Belle Icone. Some fragrances are now truly able to copy the DNA almost 100 percent. This scent comes close, although the strawberry note is a bit stronger than in the original and in my Arab dupe, making the fragrance actually appear a bit more feminine. (This is how it is marketed.) However, the longevity and sillage are neither as strong as the original nor as the slightly weaker Arab fragrances. Still, I am again shocked that Caline manages to offer such an expensive scent at such a low price. WOW!
