The Weight of Flowers, Pink by Association
In his own words, Mr Ensar sets the record straight immediately: there’s no such thing as “pink oud”. The pink in Pink Papua is an abstraction. A floral aura that makes the oud feel pink by association, absolutely not by colour. The trick is that, despite the airy concept, this wears with the weight of flowers: thick petals, relatively creamy density, and that narcotic richness that I can attribute to lotus (considering the very limited experience I have with this ingredient).
As previously mentioned in my brief statement here on Parfumo, I can detect 3 distinct stages in Pink Papua:
- Stage 1: an airy, camphorated oud breeze holding up an initially bitter floral bouquet. The bitterness is key, as it stops the whole composition from becoming “pretty,” and keeps it more botanical than bouquet.
- Stage 2: the composition thickens. The lotus turns creamier and more tactile, while the oud shifts from “fresh” to a more incensy backbone. Ensar describes a deliberate oud fusion (Borneo + Indian) designed to match the floral profile... and you can smell that intent in the mid.
- Stage 3: the landing is where the ylang-ylang earns its keep. Still intertwined with the aforementioned oud combination, a golden (not yellow) floral warmth props-up and rounds the drydown's edges.
Looking at the performance of Pink Papua, I tend to agree with those who are describing it as semi-eternal. This is not a hyperbole, it's based on my experience: this "pink abstraction" will last 20h+ on skin. The scent will radiate for the first 5-6 hours. It will recede after that, but it will still be perceptible as a notch above skin scent until the next day.
This was my first Ensar Oud experience, and given the price tag the expectations were not modest. Thankfully, Pink Papua earns it: a clearly structured composition, genuinely unusual materials (for me), and a clever oud architecture that supports (rather than smothers) the florals. The result is a truly genderless floral: airy at the top, weighty in the petals, and glowing through the ylang in the end.
