Unapologetically Opulent
Pafory Advent Calendar 2025 – Day 21

First impression: unapologetically opulent. Thick, syrupy, and heavy from the outset. Saffron - usually a marker of luxury - feels dense here, almost too much, and the orange barely manages to cut through all that sweetness.

As it develops, the heart lightens slightly. Florals begin to emerge, along with a gentle, restrained spiciness that tries to restore some balance. It smooths out, but never quite shakes that rich, plush character.

The drydown settles into sweet musky vanilla and woods, anchored by the resinous depth of labdanum. Polished, warm, and undeniably luxurious - but still firmly on the heavy side.

For me, it’s simply too sweet. It lacks the sharp edge or contrast I tend to look for. Definitely a cold-weather, evening scent - just not one I personally connect with. Sometimes a scent should frame you, not dominate you.

Sensual saffron creamsicle
The orange of the opening is both juicy and candy-like, it reminds me quite a lot of the satsuma scent from the body shop. It’s blended really nicely with a leathery saffron that’s neither heavy nor synthetic. The carrot and coriander seeds both add to the leathery feeling and brings a nice savoury element to balance the sweet orange. There’s a touch of florals and light vanilla. The florals feel a bit candied without going full department store mode. The solar note just brings a glowing warmth, it doesn’t lean beachy at all. This phase of the fragrance has to be my favourite use of fruity notes that I’ve smelled so far. I don’t normally go for a fruity perfume, but this isn’t super synthetic or overly sweet at all and there’s enough other things going on to add some really nice nuance. It reminds me of a creamsicle, but very natural and with some more mature components added in.

After about an hour or two, the juiciness has gone and the orange fades into the background with a warm amber sweetness. There’s still a mild vegetal leather quality, subtle musk, and the main player now is a slightly stronger vanilla note that is very smooth and slightly buttery. I get a very minimal amount of patchouli, but it’s there. This is where it remains for the remainder of the wear, warm comforting musky vanilla kissed by candied florals with a hint of leather and woods and a whisper of a citrusy amber. Pleasant, but I don’t love it how I loved the opening.

Blind Testing Liquide
I was given this as a nice little 7.5ml sample from Harvey Nichols a while back and only tried it this morning. I didn't know anything about it. Samples are the best kind of blind mystery testing. I get a real kick out of doing that.

So I tried it and it plastered a huge, huge too-early-Friday morning smile across my crinkled, tired features. Liquide is shockingly good.

If I had to sum it up, I'd say it is a saffron-centric fragrance that is quite clever because the saffron is in the top notes, the heart and the base, but has different effects in each stage. The yellowy top notes are saffron freshened with a lovely sweet mandarin accord that teases you with the impression of honey that isn't actually there. The heart is saffron and spices playing on the slight sourness of the saffron. The base is wood, enhanced with some patchouli and given more richness with some ambroxan and some labdanum. The ambroxan here is very well done indeed as it plays on the minerally edge of the saffron a bit and blurs the lines of definition.

It is as if they've taken the three things you associate with the saffron accord: sweetness, slight sourness and almost ambery richness, and used the other accords to diffuse each characteristic to homogenise the whole thing. As we expect from Liquides Imaginaires, the blending is superlative and there is nary a one rough edge or shouty accord that juts above the rest. This is an extremely accomplished study of saffron as a perfumery accord.

Like amber, saffron is a note I have struggled to get on board with in the past. I like the smell but find it quite one-dimensional and rich in a way that drowns out other accords. I enjoyed Zafferano by Acqua di Parma which I bought about a year ago, but was disappointed in how linear it was and how short-lived it was on my skin. I think Liquide is the fragrance I wanted Zafferano to be.

The drydown is epic and splendid in the way Arabic sunsets are. There is a much greater floral and citrus presence in Liquide than in Zafferano and it holds hands with the saffron in a way you might do with someone you love during an Arabic sunset. It shines. It glows. The floral notes are actually sweeter than the mandarin in this and the real master stroke is the orange blossom that ties it all together. The cardamom and carrot seed in the heart just deepens the orange blossom so that it isn't drowned out by the saffron. This is a genuinely brilliantly balanced bit of perfumery. Fragrantica cites this as strongly feminine leaning and I don't think that is true to my mind: this is fully unisex and as wearable as anything to boot, although it goes a little more feminine as it dries down. Regardless, it is right up my street as fragrances go and I'll be buying a full bottle of this the first chance I get. Longevity is 5-6 hours projection but I think if you are wanting a projection monster to fill rooms then this isn't the one. This is the sort of fragrance you wear when you want a confident, refined and incredibly attractive skin scent that projects enough but not too much. It does that extremely well. More beauty than beast, I would say.

But who are you, really?
Attractive, radiant, yet mysterious, with a darker shadowed side.

Saffron can be irritatingly hash and “hairy,” as it often is. But here it is quite masterfully woven into a powerful whole.

Jasmine and vanilla provide a bright glow, like a halo around the sun.

Musk gives a polished softness and sensuality.

For me, there are few edges here, little character. The presence is pleasant, even intoxicating… but who are you, really?

Don't be misled by the first impression
You can hardly avoid the Liquid Gold these days. For this reason, I decided to test this fragrance and went to my trusted perfumery.
At first, I found the scent on the blotter outstanding. Rather sweet, floral, with a hint of sour fruitiness. I was so overwhelmed by the uniqueness of this fragrance that I had to buy it.
So, I decided to purchase it and wanted to wear it the next day. However, the sharp, zesty top note kept making me sneeze. I could thus understand the parallel with the scent to One Million. That fragrance also always makes me wrinkle my nose. For a week, I didn’t dare to wear this scent extensively - which in hindsight was a mistake.
I decided to take the risk and sprayed a good 8 spritzes along my neck. The top note is still a bit of an acquired taste: slightly piercing, very sharp, and floral for me.
However, the development of this fragrance leaves me speechless. It evolves into a sweet scent that almost leans towards a gourmand note. In my opinion, this smell is comparable to cookie dough. Yet, it never loses its floral note. I’m not a fan of floral fragrances at all - this scent has taught me otherwise.
Additionally, the fragrance appears creamy, similar to a sunscreen (whose smell I actually also detest) with an orange note.
It seems that the fragrance has everything I dislike and yet turns out to be my new favorite in my collection.
I only understand the association with a hospital in the first few minutes of the scent. After that, it is as pleasing as very few fragrances I know.
The longevity also impresses me. I have to re-spray it in the evening if the night is going to be long. However, that’s the case for almost every fragrance for me.
The bottle is an absolute 10/10 for me. It visually integrates into any collection, in my opinion.
I have been wearing this scent almost continuously for 2 weeks in everyday life as well as in the evenings when going out. It is just so versatile and unique.
I have rarely smelled something so complex.
Test it! For many, it will be worth it.

A beautiful and ethereal opening, like a fluffy sunkissed cloud. Dries to an abstract radiant warmth on the skin, golden, like the bottle.

Sweet-spicy-creamy-floral: prominent saffron, creamy white musk, vanilla & floral tones. On-skin, I'd say it's adjacent to Blonde Amber.
