Summer scents with ambergris?

Summer scents with ambergris? 0

I'm obsessed with ambers and animalic ouds. These tend not to be summertime fragrances. What should I try for the hot weather this year?

So far I'm thinking Sex and The Sea.

Anyone have any other recommendations? I love ambergris and prefer feminine-leaning scents. I haven't tried much in the way of aquatics.

@Chrysoptera have you tried Sailing Day ? Has a prominent ambergris note (to me), but also feels like the ocean!

If you like ambergris, look into Anonim's three fragrances: Black Ambergris , Silver Ambergris , and Golden Ambergris. Silver Ambergris works well in summer. Sarah Baker's Atlante may also be to your liking.

Thanks for the recommendations! I ordered the Anonim ambergris sample set as well as a decant of Atlante!

Thank you! Sailing Day looks really intriguing, although aldehydes are hit or miss with me. I haven't been able to track down a sample so far though.

Are you sure it is only the ambergis you love? Eau des Merveilles Bleue gives off the same vibes as scents you like maybe, but without ambergris. It also has that 'warm towel on the beach' kind of vibe or is reminiscent of things like sailing, the sea and it is definitely for summer. You may also like REM from Reminiscence (won't come up after typing #, but is in the database).

Definitely not sure!

I have always been very picky when it comes to fragrance. I luckily had two good ones that I loved, Chopard Casmir and Chanel Coco, and most of the fragrances I've sampled have been in that amber realm. I've branched out into animalic scents as well as natural ouds, and I've had a lot of success finding new scents to enjoy.

I know I like ambergris, which smells like sea to me, but I'm not sure if I like aquatics per se. I think the only one I've tried was Squid which I like, but it's not something I'd wear.

It's hard for me to know what florals I'd like. I know for sure I like rose water and sweet rose, as well as frangipani. I don't think I'd like most gourmands but I do like a fruity note as long as it's not too sweet or synthetic. Chypres are hot or miss so far. Sometimes they feel too masculine.

Well this turned out to be a long reply! I will see if I can get samples of the fragrances you suggested. I'm excited to try Hermes.

Thanks, @Ringtale!

Ambre Suprême

@Silverrr This looks amazing. Are the aldehydes very strong? I'm not having any luck finding a decant. I'm tempted to blind buy.

well, i don't like aldehydes at all.

In this one i can't smell them, or at least they're not very dominant; it's more like a clean scent, little mineral, hint of floral. I really love the brand and they use a big percentage of natural ingredient, as you can see i have both vanille havane and the oil extract of vanille havane. Don't know if they are distributed in US

They are distributed in the US and samples are available. Their fragrances also make occasional appearances at discounters here.

@Chrysoptera I hear you - aldehydes are hit or miss for me too.
I see you're in the US; based on that, for sampling options -

If you live near a Sephora:
- They carry Sailing Day , so you can test in store.
- Just select the closest Sephora location to see if they have any size in stock.
(I selected a random one for the screenshot, in Las Vegas)
- If they do, then you can use the tester bottle for free.

If you don't live near a Sephora:
- Ebay seems to have a number of samples for decent prices.

@Gourmandgrl thank you so much!!

Yes to what @Smirky said!

@Chrysoptera here are just a few retailer examples (click to expand - shows prices for samples/decants of Ambre Suprême ), from a brief Google search:

Lucky Scent sells samples and full bottles of many of them and also sells their 13 fragrance sample set.

Thanks so much, @Gourmandgrl and @Smirky! I hadn't tried Lucky Scent before. I ordered the sample set.

Enjoy them. I really like silver ambergris.Ambergris. Another fragrance I enjoy that has an ambergris accord is IV-IV White Whale. I didn't include it in my first post because of the description of the fragrances you like. Think Moby Dick and the Pequod. Not ambergris, to my knowledge, but you may want to sample The Mariner's Rhyme. It's a beautiful fragrance that may fit your tastes.

@JSO60 Thanks! I've heard good things about IV-IV White Whale. I love Francesca Bianchi but The Mariner's Rhyme is one of hers I haven't tried yet.

I know I like ambergris, which smells like sea to me, but I'm not sure if I like aquatics per se. I think the only one I've tried was Squid which I like, but it's not something I'd wear.

So going off this, I'm wondering if you'd like one of the fragrances that try to approximate the effect or smell (such as it is) of salt without necessarily veering into aquatic.

Acqua di Sale

Fleurs de Sel

Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne

Acqua di Scandola

Eau des Merveilles Eau de Toilette

I'm wearing Eau des Merveilles Eau de Toilette today and its ons of my very favourites. Salty oranges and amber 🧡

ETA I would classify most of these unisex or a bit masc leaning, not particularly femme. YMMV

@MorganleFay Thank you! Very interesting options and you might be right.

I'm going to update once I've sampled most of these.

2

Y'all. I still have about a million samples coming but I think I found the one.

Amber Cologne

Crazy good citrus and plumeria with ambergris and sandalwood. It is so good!

Congratulations.

I'm going to keep updating as my samples arrive. Today I tried:

Silver Ambergris

Like a more grown-up Squid but greener. Very deep, very green aquatic. As with Squid, the sweet notes don't work for me here, and neither does the deep water note. The ambergris underneath is amazing though, salty and slightly raunchy.

Black Ambergris

Coffee, dark chocolate, dried fruit. Then, eventually, salt and soapy sandalwood. All the individual notes are really beautiful, but this is just too much of a shape shifter for me. The first half doesn't know what the second half is doing.

Atlante

At first I get the cleanest seafood place ever. Then the saltwater notes calm down. Yuzu, pepper, seaweed, sandalwood. This is a gorgeous, classy, beachy fragrance with none of the notes that go wrong for me in fresh or aquatic fragrances. This might be full bottle worthy!

Thanks @JSO60 fur the recommendations. More to come!

Second. I wore this during some really warm summer evenings and felt fabulous. It has a subtle silky, salty quality that when combined with the florals is just gorgeous. Lusty.
