sickeningly sweet and heavy
As others have said...not actually for people who love books, libraries, and the scent of those things. Opening reminds me of Marc Jacobs Decadence. I love plums and other stone fruit in real life but apparently not in perfume. I felt like I was being dragged down by a dark, oppressive cloud of sweetness. Sickening and not in the good way. Gave me a headache and I could not wait around for the dry down. Scrubbed it off.

In general Byredo fragrances are too sweet for me and this was no different. In theory I like the fruit notes. I wish they were juicy instead of smothered in high fructose corn syrup and synthetic leather. I imagine a leaner, fresher, less opulent interpretation would those notes shine.

Check the weather if you want to wear this
Be warned that this is a fall/winter scent as heat affects the scent very much. Bibliothèque becomes very sweet and fruity and the notes are flattened in warmer weather but if worn during cooler days, you’ll get everything it promises to deliver.

I find the notes listed are incomplete. For me, the opening is a burst of peach, patchouli and bergamot. 10 minutes later, it’s a pronounced parchment and musty old books, an old bookstore that has taken over. The vanilla and leather appear and interweave with the old books, plum and raspberry in the background. I get hints of incense and vetiver. The problem for me is the drydown where a peony powderiness takes over. No leather, no fruit, no smoke. Just old books and Victorian bathroom talc.

Overall, Bibliothèque is a dry, dry, dry scent. As with most Byredo fragrances, the notes are detectably synthetic, which may or may not be a deal breaker for you. Just make sure to keep it cool if you plan to wear it.

Love.
This scent is wonderful and evokes two strong images for me, and so I will share those rather than delving into the notes.

The first and probably the reason I love it so much... My grandpa was a cigar smoker and this scent reminds me exactly of a humidor. The old wood mixed with dry tobacco leaves is a scent that brings me joy and this fragrance, presumably accidentally, NAILS it like nothing I've smelled before. If you know what a humidor smells like and enjoy it, regardless of whether you are a smoker, you will enjoy Bibliotheque.

Second, and probably more to what Byredo was going for... anyone remember that episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender where the gang visits the ancient library hidden below the sand in the desert? This fragrance smells like that library. I'll leave it at that.

Lovely.

dark academia darling
A gothic still life. A Caravaggio chiaroscuro of overripe plums, brandy snifters, inkwells and fountain pens. Bibliotheque is the fine art PhD twin sister next to the avant garde concept artist one that is Pulp. She's fruity in an almost fermented way, like a splash of elderberry schnapps, but freshened with a bite of violet pastilles. I’m also getting an “antique shop” accord; a patina of dust sugaring tufted armchairs of dark chocolaty leather. And I love it. Her longevity is solid and sillage appropriately treacly. If Bibliotheque smells like a library, it’s a dark fantasy library – a Guillermo del Toro’s imagining of Beauty and the Beast. Her companion candle is just as good, too.

Mental Snapshot: a Dark Academia boarding school drama. Ivy League Hermione Granger. Carmilla and Laura meet-cute at Le Rosey. A Donna Tartt classics major love interest. Tweed overcoats, black lace petticoats, knee-high riding boots. A silver hip flask of plum wine, swigged amidst stacks of leather-bound mysteries. The plot somehow involves a talking magpie and a magic Birkin.

tl;dr: Dark Academia darling

Well...when I first wrote this review originally in that one perfume database run by lunatics, I really loved this one. I said: "The only perfume in my life, so far, that I have re-bought. A perfume for interesting people who are fascinated by the world's dualities and aren't afraid to walk between them - the punchy mix between leather and fruit is a once in a lifetime experience. If it smells like ink on you, maybe it's time to take a shower. If you are curious about it because miss Charlotte Aitchinson namedropped it in a random YouTube video, bad news: you will hate it. It will detect every wannabe gene in your body and it will END you. Buy Santal 33 instead."

Now, I find it very dark and a mismatch to my personality. But it's still a great: well mixed and not fleeting at all.

Lipsticky plum & fuzzy sweet peach with some powdery background, no reason to be called library, I expected it to be woodier, but its nice.

Dusty book, dried fruits, a Floral aspect comes out to play shortly after; their leathery friend says hi then shies away like an introvert.

Much closer to a candy shop than a bibliothèque in my book. Smooth and comforting after the drydown but with a mind-numbingly sweet opening.

Leather opening. Dries down to a sweet plum. Does not remind me of a library, but still nice. More like a plum drink in a speakeasy.

I don't detect any sweetness at all—just dried plum, leather, lipstick, and the scent of a dusty wooden library.

On paper and skin love everything about this. But it poofs away and vanishes in seconds. Disappointing.

A palatable fruity leather scent. Less library, and more sweet shop, but I enjoy the scent.
