A lagoon after the rain

La Belle Fleur Terrible by Jean Paul Gaultier is an aquatic amber floral that makes you travel with your sense of smell to a tropical lagoon on a hot humid day after the rain. The lagoon is adorned by beautiful floating blue water lilies and you are drinking a ginger ale to refresh yourself while your skin is warm and sweet. Around you the humid and hot nature exhales smells of sweet creamy flowers, fresh herbs and green leaves. Fresh, aquatic, floral, and…coconutty?

This is a beautiful, fresh, and floral focused flanker to the OG La Belle, by none other than Quentin Bisch. I love almost everything this man creates.

I must admit, Fleur Terrible is an interesting name but I’m not French or anything, so I must not be saying it right lol. Anyways, this fragrance is a few things, but one thing it’s not is weak. I was shocked at how much this one was projecting all over the place when I wore it to work today. The performance is on par with the other La Belles but the main difference with FT is that it’s floral, powdery, and slightly aquatic. I was surprised to see iris in the notes, but here, it adds a gorgeous and soft powdery touch to a nicely sweet and watery scent. Oddly enough, I am getting the coconut vibe people keep talking about even though there isn’t any coconut here. I wonder if the water lily is causing that or what… either way, it’s beautifully blended and instantly boosts my mood when I smell it. It’s calming, fresh, and gentle, but still has a sensuality to it.

Not only is the juice beautiful and performs well, the bottle is absolutely stunning. I love all aspects of the bottle, from the blue color, to the floral neckpiece, and of course, the sexy and classic La Belle silhouette. I just love it and it elevates my experience when using this perfume.

This is one that’s great for the spring and summer, but I couldn’t see there being an issue if you wanted to bust this out during fall and winter days when you’ll be indoors. It’s pretty, strong, but still subtle enough to wear whenever. I’ll admit, I can understand why some people wouldn’t be keen on this. The notes are quite simple, but the scent profile itself is complex and unique. Too bad it’s been discontinued.

watermelon shampoo

opens very aquatic. im getting juicy watermelon (albeit a pretty synthetic scent.) its fresh and sugary sweet. then comes the iris, which almost always reads as dust to me. the sweetness of the opening lingers throughout the wear. if you are looking for a soft, dewy floral scent then you will be disappointed. this is the smell of a cold shower with a sweet watermelon shampoo in your hair

this longevity is crazy lol. i applied it yesterday after showering at around 9pm. its now 2pm the next day and its still there. i even applied another perfume this morning and I can still smell this fuckass watermelon on my wrist. its not on my clothes/hair.

Aquatic floral with staying power

Gorgeous aquatic floral. I definitely pick up on the iris note, it is very well-done in this perfume. It lends a slightly powdery note but does not go into “old-fashioned” territory (iris is a note that can feel a bit dated to me sometimes). The fragrance overall has a light, fresh, watery, modern but still soft air.

I don’t think watermelon is a note, but to me Paradise Garden almost has that same “watery and slightly sweet” watermelon quality of the (sadly discontinued) Guerlain Coconut Fizz. (They are absolutely not dupes! But as someone who owns both, I will say I do get similar “sweet aquatic” vibes from them.)

Furthermore, what I love about JPG scents is that they have actual staying power and sillage, and this is no exception. It is hard to find fresh spring/summer perfumes that last and project! So that in and of itself makes this a “win” for me. Lovely fragrance, great staying power, and a beautiful bottle.

Mermaid in the Water Lily Pond

I admit, most JPG fragrances in the women's body bottle do not harmonize with me. However, the announcement of "Belle Fleur Terrible" piqued my curiosity. The apparently simple and fresh composition matched my taste perfectly, along with the marketing and the look of the bottle - I had to test it!
Joyfully, I opened the sample package and couldn't spray it fast enough. I wanted to be a mermaid with a flower crown, a summer dream in the gray winter.
Uff, okay. Not quite as I imagined. Instead of blue lotus, I perceive water lilies, and a long-forgotten memory awakens. I am instantly a child again, standing in the garden center in the aquarium section, admiring exotic fish in tanks. The scent of pond plants, algae, and bark mulch surrounds me. I can almost hear the splashing of the circulation pumps... Well, that's a nice memory, but do I want to smell like THIS? Where's the beach? I should give the fragrance more time.
After about an hour, the iris stretches its head forward, somewhat penetrating, yet the scent remains refreshingly cool and aquatic. A delicate hint of vanilla can also be sensed. Or is it coconut? With a lot of imagination, it could also be fish food. A headache is slowly creeping in; it is a bit too heavy. Five hours later, it needs to be washed off, and even after the shower, it can still be faintly sensed.

Oh beautiful flower, I wanted to like you so much. I do like you, somehow, but it’s complicated. I understand the Caribbean associations, I can easily imagine the scent during warmer seasons, I would be happy to encounter a cloud of it here and there - but not on me. Maybe I would have liked you more if I had met you in summer and if you reminded me more of the South Seas than of a garden center. What a pity.
