Black Noir? More like bright sunshine
As a fragrance enthusiast, you just have to love Mancera and Montale. Founded by the surreptitious Pierre Montale, these houses churn out fragrances like there’s no tomorrow. Good or bad, it seems not to matter, as if they have some mandate to pad their ever-increasing catalog with Aoud this and Aoud that, even when the fragrances contain no evidence of oud.

The names are enigmatic to say the least. Lemon Line? What is a lemon line? Gold Intensitive Aoud - intensitive isn’t even a word. Chocolate Greedy - like, greedy for chocolate? But Black Noir might be the oddest of all.

Of course, Black Noir is just the same word in two different languages. Like rice pilaf, or chai tea. Already weird, but it gets a lot weirder after you spray it on: what you smell is such a bright sunny fresh fruity floral that you’ll think you sprayed the wrong decant.

Of course, the leather is there in the background, but the foreground is dominated by a “tiare” accord - which could really be any tropical flower; what I mostly get is some soft slightly powdery florals with a tropical fruity twist - think pineapples and coconuts and the ilk. It really has that sunscreen, beachy vibe which so wholly contradicts the name and note listing.

I was expecting a dark leather, oud, patchouli, and tobacco, maybe tempered with tonka and vanilla, but a fruity floral called “Black Noir” is just too much, and simultaneously exactly what I expect from Mancera. Who cares. Smells good, get it out there. Name? What name? Black Noir? Cool. By the way, zero oud or tobacco in here, if you were curious.

But it’s not a bad scent at all. I’d totally take this on a vacation to a tropical island. Wear it at night at a nice beach bonfire.

The Vanilla Cappuccino
Black leather, where are you? Just tonka and vanilla!

After receiving this relatively unknown Mancera fragrance as a sample, it was finally time to test it, and I must say, I was more than convinced. At first, the name, which suggests a dark scent, misled me, as I found it to be not dark at all.

From the first spray, it evokes for me associations with a warm sweet vanilla cappuccino, freshly pressed from roasted coffee beans.

The fragrance opens with a strongly sweet tonka bean and warm vanilla. These are also the two components that can be intensely perceived until the end. The first few minutes are also the only time when you can notice the leather and spicy pepper. After that, they simply fade away, and suddenly there is no trace of the oh-so-dark leather. However, this is not a problem. The only weakness I note is the sometimes overly sweet tonka bean, which reaches its peak especially in the first 15-30 minutes.

I perceive floral notes and patchouli only very slightly, and I think they do not provide any significant added value to this fragrance. On the other hand, a beautiful spicy tobacco note and a fleeting oud are part of the progression, which in my opinion intensively enhance the fragrance and make it a real beast.

It continues with notes like tobacco, leather, and oud receding into the background, leaving mainly vanilla, tonka, and amber in the drydown. Among other things, the amber elevates the fragrance to a new level with its creamy soft texture and fits perfectly into this harmony. I only really notice the vetiver at the very end after at least 6 hours through a lovely spicy component. Thus, the fragrance concludes with sweet warm and gourmand vanilla notes.

The longevity is above average, as the fragrance easily lasts 8 hours on the skin. The sillage is also noticeable and will surely lead to some glances and compliments.

The Black Noir also reminds me of other warm fragrances like Grand Soir. Despite its relatively unknown presence, I think this fragrance will appeal to many people. It should definitely be tested!

Lots of tiare. Very floral, but leathery and more masc as it dries. Wasn't impressed, but after wearing, it's nice. Pretty Addictive. 8/10.

It's a good thing that leather and oud fade after a while! It's also nice that the spice and sweetness remain subtle and balanced afterwards

Oh, what am I smelling? Tropical island blooms, creamy & warm, combined with woody, distinctive leather. What a beautiful, innovative scent this is!

Very prominent Tiaré note. Smells overall like creamy coconut lotion with a hint of leather. Black? Noir?

For me, it's a spicy, synthetic scent that lasts a long time; I can't specifically smell the leather or the pepper.

Smells like a garage to me. Unpleasant leather and pepper smell like cold exhaust, rubber tires, and dust.
Not for me.

Dark leather in an abandoned alley, a match flickers, the sunrise approaches and it gradually gets brighter.
Reminds me of Ombre Leather.

Distinctly leathery, but more creamy-floral with subtle sweetness than spicy-resinous. There's not much tobacco and vanilla here.

The doubly dark name is unfortunately quite misleading. My spontaneous retro association: opera-goers in elegant attire...

Overall a pleasant woody-spicy, slightly leathery tobacco scent, synthetic, a bit indistinct. Less dark than its bottle.
