Some leathers are bigger than others
Recently, I've been testing a fair amount of leather-esque fragrances including a few from Maison Crivelli, Matiere Premiere and Middle Eastern "clones". This is not a true review of Falcon Leather, but a relative comparison.
I would place Falcon Leather in the same region as Safran Secret by Maison Crivelli (and perhaps also Safran Colognisé). These are all quite dry, and I agree that some people might percieve them as medicinal (especially Crivelli's one). None of them are bad, but you'll need to like those aspects.
In Falcon Leather (and also Spectre, which is a good clone) the birch is more pronounced, compared to the others I mentioned. I found its performance to be OK, but a bit underwhelming for a leather fragrance.
My favourites among all those I recently tried are Oud Stallion and Falcon Leather Extrait de Parfum. They both go in different directions, by amping up their respective brand DNAs.
As we are talking more specifically about Matiere Premiere, I must say that the extrait version of Falcon Leather is clearly superior from any aspect, excluding the price. It still has the same base as the OG, but the scent profile is less dry. The benzoin is more evident and the addition of Firmenich proprietary oud complete the composition's roundednes... and most likely contributes to its substantial performance.
To me, it smells like treated leather sports equipment (think baseball glove, in case you don't own a trained falcon) in the best way possible.
PS: a point for those who get alarmed by the fact that a leather fragrance doesn't have "leather" described among its notes. It might come as a shock, but leather essence can't be extracted from... leather! As many other notes, effectively leather is a "fantasy note" which can be achieved by other ingredients. A very common one is saffron, but it can also be achieved by using woods (including ouds).
