The Night Queen
Reine de Nuit, Night Queen. Such a fitting name for beautifully mysterious rose. This is the type of fragrance that paints an image.

I immediately envision a woman of breathtaking allure. The kind of woman that makes you stutter and trip over your words when she makes eye contact. When she looks at you, the rest of the world is black & white while time stands still.

Reine de Nuit is an erotic and intoxicating rose. She evolves elegantly, but remains soft and intimate. Musk Mallow, being a nutty, tobacco-like aroma gives the composition an exotic facet. Black currant offers the right kind of sweetness to compliment the rose. You can't have the "Nuit" without incense and patchouli. I am quite taken with this sexy ensemble of notes. She is who she is; gorgeous and unapologetic.

Good Girls
While Beth gets an epilation, the good Dean sits at his desk in the car dealership and has fun with the secretary. Beth, meanwhile, is told that her credit card is not accepted. Beth is classy, 40ish, attractive, confident. She has style, is educated and a full mother..........and apparently they are broke and her husband is cheating on her.

Now how to change that? First she robs a supermarket with her sister and another friend. It seems like Beth has never done anything else. She knows it's wrong. But she likes it. Will it be enough, just this coup, to get her back in the black? No, of course not! The journey continues. Beth is enterprising and starts laundering money for the drug lord in town. Even starts something with this hot guy........... before she kicks out the secretary, takes over the dealership. The lives of these 3 women are exciting, funny and really entertaining.

A series that I've been wolfing away. Beth, of course, wears Reine de Nuit when she goes out for the evening. With Portait of a Lady, one of the most beautiful rose scents for me. Here, the saffron adds a slightly smoky note. And while I notice more the raspberry in POAL, here it's the currant. Reine de Nuit is softer, cuddly, almost cozy, not as harsh as Lady. The patch amber combination makes the fragrance perfect.

The patchouli and me
I start right away with a confession: I hate patchouli. Therefore, perfumes, in which even just echoing patchouli - notes are to be found in the fragrance pyramid, are immediately out.
Now it wants the coincidence that I get a filling of "Reine de nuit" to a perfume order as a gift. Brav I research what awaits me: Rose (Jackpot!), Patchouli (Go no!). Carefully, I sniff the bottler. I like the scent. So I spray boldly drauflos.
The saffron tickles pleasantly in the nose, until the rose, paired with the incense hold entry. What can I say? The fragrance is the hammer! No granny - floral blanket, no squeaky-colorful teenager - fantasy. Simply an elegant, dark, beautiful rose.
Anxiously I wait for the patchouli in the base, which will ruin with the beautiful fragrance experience. It takes its time and I revel a bit more in the rose garden. So long, until the mood changes. The patchouli is there. I smell it quite clearly and... it doesn't bother me in the least! Quite the contrary. I even find it very fitting at this point! Even before my brain has taken control of my relief, "Reine de nuit" is on the wish list.
That was yesterday at 18:00.This morning I wake up and the scent is still there, on my head cushion, on my skin. The patchouli has also spent the night there and still I do not have the urge to wash myself clean.
My perfume - prey scheme has probably expanded....

queen shrouded in smoke: Rose of the night
Yes, I admit: for me too, the "Queen of the Night" is first and foremost a cactus flower.
And what a flower! Its flowering period, which only lasts a few hours, gives it a magical quality and our botanical garden announces this event in the newsletter and even opens this greenhouse for a few hours for lovers of this nocturnal flowering splendor! But luckily this term is not patented or otherwise protected:
I also think of the "Queen of the Night" from Mozart's "Magic Flute"; I especially love her aria "Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen" when sung by Diana Damrau.
(Incidentally, Ms. Damrau mentioned in a conversation that singing this aria is akin to hard physical work. This also explains why the performer of this queen on stage is usually younger than Tamina, her daughter on stage!)
But back to the luxurious, profound rose fragrance that bears this name.

I really don't belong to the "fan community" of the Byredo brand, but I was attracted by the name and the deep golden-brown liquid in the small vial that was sent to me.
What might it reveal, what will blossom fragrantly on my very special, always somewhat cool skin? Let's take a look:

Once we have passed the tart fruitiness of the hedges of blackcurrant bushes and nibbled some of the dark berries in passing, it awaits us in a small pavilion behind dark, dense veils of incense and amber, rooted in golden-brown, rich patchouli earth and blossoming into full beauty spiced with precious saffron:
A deep red, intensely fragrant mature rose that exudes its rich floral aroma in velvety waves, reminiscent of mysterious warm nights in the fairytale Orient.

This veiled "Queen of the Night" is a dark, aromatically spiced rose-patchouli beauty that I can also very well imagine as a soap or even a fragrant body powder.
(That would be a pleasure!)

Byredo's "Night Veils - Reine de Nuit" is not a "must have", but still a pleasant rich rose fragrance experience that shows me that this brand and I do harmonize from time to time.
It works here and I'm going to put the bottle next to my bed tonight so I don't forget to put it on:
Perhaps this "Reine de Nuit" will tell me fairy tales from 1,001 nights, while veils of smoke (from Aladdin's magic lamp?) smelling of precious roses accompany me to sleep.
It's worth a try!

Never say never
Why do we like something and why do we not like something... I don't like floral scents, I've known that since I became interested in perfumery. Rose, jasmine, geranium, white flowers, yellow flowers - no thanks, tuberose is a fright word at all. Some oriental rose scents with a mild oud content I like on other skins, but not on my own. You ask - why do you need to know that. To decipher the mystery how this rose scent could enchant me so much that I tested it for the first time yesterday afternoon, fell head over heels in love and bought it the same evening. I, who is normally very sceptical, usually leaves fragrances off the wish list after the 2nd testing and often (actually almost always) leaves perfumeries with a disappointed sigh "and again nothing new". And actually I wanted to test the Ombre Leather for the umpteenth time and most likely buy it. :)
And I'm sure I've had something very similar up my nose x times before... I'd like to know something... But here are some nuances that make the creamy sweetness very sensual and unbelievably feminine but not beguiling, lightly sour currant skillfully integrated and my favourite smoky-woody base rounds off the work wonderfully. Yesterday I defined for myself - a combination of Montal (sour), Narciso Rodriguez (solid woody creaminess), Calypso by Robert Piguet (both roses I find very similar) and Liquides Imaginaires Bloody Wood (sweetness). Other opinions?

Saw this described as a witchy fragrance. In a strange way it is—blackcurrant and sweet florals turn rich and dark later. Easy to layer too!

Bitter fruity currant completes and deepens spicy rose. But this (and patchouli) helps the fragrance also to a certain heaviness.

Sultry, not too sweet. Well-blended rose, green currant with ambrette notes are perfect. Heard they are discontinuing. Hope it's not true.

Opening with sweet blackcurrant. This like Portrait of a lady plus fruity and amber for me. Brighter sweeter and easier to use. Love both.
