Squaring the circle
Clive Christian loves his limited edition flankers from the classic collection, but do we love them?
Mostly yes. The green range in particular has produced masterpieces such as 1872 Mandarin as well as the extremely popular 1872 Vetiver. But what about the house's black range?
In fact, one might assume that such an independent fragrance would make it difficult to transform. With X Liquorice, however, this has been achieved in a magnificent way. Although the classic basic structure is still present, maple and, above all, myrrh manage to move the fragrance in a new direction
Where in the original, spicy ginger merges with an all-dominant cardamom to create a cool, almost freshly spicy character, in X Liquorice we find a darker, warmer fragrance with an oriental touch as the foundation for the dominant aniseed note.
This is partly because the ginger-cardamom accord of the classic X for Men has been significantly reduced to create the necessary space that allows the fragrance to transform, but also because of the newly added darker nuances.
If you go into a little more detail, you could also guess that the dry, powdery iris has been replaced by a fuller, softer iris butter, probably also because the newly added myrrh gives the fragrance a slight smokiness that is already underlined by the vetiver and oakmoss and would perhaps have slipped into unpleasantness with a more powdery iris.
It is also this quality of the greenish shrubby, slightly dry smokiness that prevents the sweetness of the aniseed from steering the fragrance too much into the pleasing designer segment or even gourmand
Thus, X Liquorice remains a fragrance with a classic touch, which nevertheless manages to incorporate a modern twist without stumbling over itself and succumbing to an identity crisis like Town & Country. This squaring of the circle makes it incredibly attractive to me and one of the best Clives.
The performance is similar to that of the classic, and is appropriate for a more classic fragrance: rather close to the skin and quiet, but perceptible on the skin for a good 8 hours.
