Fresh and Aromatic, but Gone Like Magic
I haven't got the chance of testing out the original Acqua di Giò Profondo (2020) Eau de Parfum to compare Acqua di Giò Profondo Parfum to. Frankly, this is the first Acqua di Giò fragrance that I've tried. And it's not bad (scent-wise, at least), but not exactly my style.
After the initial synthetic blast on the opening, Profondo Parfum turns a little bit salty and aquatic, very clearly reminiscent of the ocean, but also of a fresh shampoo. The bergamot also aids in making the opening fresher and more citrusy. However, immediately as it starts settling, the ocean dries up, and I don't get much freshness anymore. Instead, Profondo Parfum turns into an interesting aromatic, dry, smooth profile, which I did not expect. At first, I couldn't stand it; it smelled like a dirty citrus to me. I gave it a couple more tries afterwards, though, and it has grown on me, although I am still far from in love with it. That smooth, syrupy, sort of honey-like touch of sweetness mixed with the aromatics is apparently the everlasting flower note, which is supposed to remind of a honeyed note of hay, fresh thyme and some tobacco. Along with some patchouli and cistus, it's hard to tell which is which, but they all make for this smooth, a tad sweet, herbal scent, with little to none of the initial marine saltiness left. So while there's definitely people that will love this scent profile, it just isn't exactly my cup of tea. I don't detest it, but it's not really what I want from a fresh, summer fragrance.
Ah, but I can get over the scent, just not over the performance. On my skin, Profondo Parfum was gone in about 4 hours, and it also didn't do much in terms of projection, closing in on my skin very rapidly. I feel like I could put on 12 sprays and it still would barely project any more than half a feet. But my skin chemistry might also be to blame, so on your skin, it could definitely perform a tad differently.
One undisputed pro that his fragrance has, though, is its versatility. From a school and work pick to a daily and leisure go-to, Profondo Parfum will do just fine at not offending anyone, mainly because not many will get a whiff of it, either because it's not projecting or either because it's already gone. So spray generously.
But it's going to be a pass for me. Mainly because of its poor performance, yes, but also because I'm not entirely convinced by the aromatic twist on the drydown. If it suits your taste and if you get some better projection/longevity out of Profondo Parfum, then it might justify the hefty price tag. But I feel, only from what I've heard, that other flankers from the Acqua di Giò line might be better altogether. Flankers like Acqua di Giò Profondo (2020) Eau de Parfum , Acqua di Giò Profumo Parfum , or Acqua di Giò Parfum .
Overall Rating: 5.1/10
