Closer than you thought to the original
I had already reviewed this fragrance, however, i didn't own it back in the day, and now, i do, and i will give you my impressions on the fragrance, as i have been wearing it back and forth in different climates, during the last five months.
My first impression on the Gentleman by Givenchy, in the first time i tried it, around my birthday of 2021 and around a year before of actually buying it, was a modern leather scent, much like CH Men Privé and JPG Le Male Essence de Parfum, such. Along it, i tested the vintage Gentleman '74 (Which i originally did like more than the current) and the Gentlemen Only Absolute, which i found nice but didn't really interest me to like, buy it, plus the already mentioned CH Privé, JPG Le Male Essence, Dior Hommes and Polo green, which i ended up buying. Anyway, as i bought a fragrance of my choice in my birthday (July) of this year, 2022, i went to the store hoping to find CH Privé and pull the trigger, since it was one of my favorite scents. They didn't have it, and i really wanted to walk home that day with a brand new modern leather, date frag, and they had some Gentleman EDT 2017 gift sets at a good price. I bought a case, including a shower gel (Which i use to shave) and the EDT 100ml bottle.
Gentleman (2017) by Givenchy is a fragrance that takes inspiration out of several tendencies in the fragrance world, current and past. First of all might be CH Men Privé by Carolina Herrera, as leather seems to be a path very appealing to one of the perfumers, Nathalie Lorson. However, the CH frag is based upon a kind of russian leather, as it has wood bark tar smoke, phenolic nuances, along petrol tones and an astringent whisky note in the head, along warm spices and tonka bean sweetness, while Gentleman has a more tamed down sweetness, its leather note is more refined and not as "in your face", and its booze nuances are lighter and more refined as well. To my eyes, the CH fragrance has a more appealing leather note than the Givenchy, however, having an extremely dominant and heavy leather note is not the purpose of this frag.
I am guessing the purpose of Givenchy when ordering the creation of Gentleman '17, was making a versatile, modern, but manly fragrance, different than the already known "blue" fragrances that dominate the market today. This was done by the two noses creating a "light" leather scent, with a fruity head, cardamom spice and powdery floral nuances in the heart. This makes me think that, this actually has a bit of inspiration and structure taken from the original Gentleman from the 1970's, even though they go in completely different directions. To my taste, they share certain accords, if not the concept of the whole olfactive pyramids. In the opening, both possess boozy nuances, (Original: Animalic honey plus the civet in the base / Modern: Boozy aromachemical fruits) share a warm spicy and powdery heart (Original: Cinnamon, Patchouli and Orris Root / Modern: Cardamom and Iris) and both are dominated in their drydown by a leather note and sweetness (Original: Russian, dirty, smoky, brown leather with amber, plus the patchouli earth and civet rancid nuances / Modern: Refined, almost a suede - like leather, i am guessing based upon safroleine or violet like notes, with labdanum and resin nuances and pretty much no smoke at all, does have a castoreum ingredient but it is extremely tamed down, and has a vanilla note which softens the drydown a bit)
When compared to either Gentleman '74 (Which i state once again, even when sharing the concept of their respective olfactive pyramids, don't smell nothing like the other) and CH Men Privé / JPG Le Male Essence, i would say the Givenchy perfume is way more refined and versatile, climate - wise, than the previously mentioned. While fall being the perfect time of the year for its use, can be worn in warmer winter days and fresher summer times. It is extremely sexy, and for that fruits, iris and refined leather combo, seems to me more elegant than some of its counterparts, when refering to the clothing to be used with it. If you ask me, wear a nice button up shirt, shave and put this on on a fall afternoon or evening on a date. She will love it.
Bottom line: Good longevity, of some 7 - 8 hours, intimate projection which can either be a good or a bad thing (Being a leather based scent) extremely versatile for intermediate climates but still more elegant than casual IMO. I would advice to try it out, maybe you'll like it more than CH Privé for date use, it is very sexy. Greetings
