fragments of a dream
As I have been wearing this fragrance, I am struck by how nothing seems quite linear about it, how delicately "outside of time" it feels. I realized it reminded me of the feeling I have after waking up and trying to recall the dream I was just having. I am half-here, half-there, both places and neither at once.

Nosferatu is like that--fragments from last night's dreams, scrawled in the grey dawn before they fade: the moon's reflection in cooling bathwater. Soft fog, carved from shadow, packed with frost. A brittle wisp of dried lilac, phantasmal at twilight, fragile rustles of the restless dead. Storm-struck stone, its hollow sparking echo dimly illuminating a subterranean cavern, ghost light lingering between vespers, dawn, and never. The creeping moss of midnight rains veining the marble tears of weeping saints.

sepulchre stone
Wilted purple petals, fresh turned soil, a shroud of petrichor rising from sepulchre stone. This is one of the most transportive scents I’ve met, and surprisingly wearable too. Few fragrances capture the sensation of coldness so well. This is the feeling of forging through a fog bank, damp earth underfoot. And… cucumber? (Don’t question it). It works splendidly and saves the fragrance from feeling too moldery or dank. As otherworldly as Nosferatu is, I’d argue it’s also totally office safe: at the end of the day this is still a clean, soft-spoken floral. Inside of you are two wolves: the dewy-eyed solicitor and the demon rat man. And they both wear this.

Longevity is the best I’ve gotten out of a Heretic (>5h), but in the end I decided to spring for the candle rather than the fragrance, as I felt it was I scent I enjoyed more filling a room than carried on skin. It was obscenely expensive, but then again... I am an appetite, nothing more.

Mental Snapshot: What can I imagine that Eggers hasn’t? I like to think this is the scent shored within Ellen’s locket, as perceived by Orlok. Desiccated bouquets and powdered flesh, steeped in the rain and earth from a weeks long voyage, now magnified hundredfold to the nose of an ageless predator.

tl;dr: you must spritz it on *wheeeeeezzeee* crazy style

NOSFERATU ON A SPRING PICNIC WITH A BOUQUET OF FRESH LILACS
Unexpected! I thought this fragrance would evoke the earthy, damp scent of a moldy cellar or a musty basement. Instead, it’s a crystalline, wet floral. It opens with a soil-and-dirt earthiness — like mud after a rainstorm — but the petrichor note is subtle, clean, and refined. It's a cold, watercolor floral composition. The lilac is delicate and lovely, reminiscent of the white lilac variety. It’s not warm or indolic but instead evokes a cool Victorian gothic aesthetic — think white lace and pale skin in the moonlight...

(Though I wouldn’t be surprised if Nosferatu was lurking in the shadows, sniffing the lilacs like a romantic undead botanist)

The violet is refreshingly photorealistic, neither powdery, sweet, nor candy-like. It’s as if spring violets are blooming fresh and pure in a dewy meadow. I didn't get any iris, oud or labdanum.

The packaging is stunning, featuring a tasteful gothic font and a Nosferatu sigil atop the cap. Minimalistic and elegant, it also includes a charmingly old-fashioned black-and-white promotional newspaper that tells the story of the film, the perfume notes, and the perfumer.

The fragrance isn’t spooky, though. Depending on your perspective, it could evoke fresh flowers laid on a freshly dug grave — or equally, watercolor Easter blooms in the midst of a spring rain. As a big fan of the original Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror — the 1922 silent German expressionist vampire classic — I find this fragrance to be an intriguing tribute. The trailer for the new film hints at a different story, and I noticed a bouquet of lilacs featured prominently in it. The lilac note, therefore, makes perfect sense. Who knew vampires could be floral enthusiasts? Just don’t expect to smell garlic anytime soon!

A Melancholic Misstep
There exists a fine line between avant-garde olfactory artistry and aromatic misjudgment. Heretic Perfumes' "Nosferatu" unfortunately falls decidedly into the latter category.

One approaches niche perfumery with an open mind, understanding that challenging compositions often reward patience. However, "Nosferatu" offers no such redemption. The fragrance opens with what I can only describe as the olfactory equivalent of unearthing a stack of newspapers left to decay beneath a leaking cellar window—damp, musty, and immediately off-putting.

As the scent develops, it reveals a disconcerting terrarium-like quality reminiscent of a reptile enclosure long overdue for maintenance. The mossy, earthy notes that might have provided contemplative depth instead conjure the unsettling atmosphere of confined reptiles and their unattended habitat.

What proves most disappointing is not the conceptual boldness—one appreciates the gothic reference and the courage to explore darker, soil-bound elements—but rather the execution, which induces a physiological aversion rather than intellectual curiosity. The composition triggered a wave of nausea that persisted well after attempting to scrub the scent from my skin.

Heretic's portfolio contains several worthy olfactory explorations, which makes "Nosferatu" all the more perplexing. One wonders if perhaps the perfumer became too enamored with the namesake's mythology and lost perspective on wearability. While perfume need not be conventionally pleasant to be artistically significant, it should not actively repel its wearer.

Those seeking gothic or earthy compositions would be better served exploring other options in the niche market that manage to convey atmospheric darkness without veering into the realm of physical discomfort.

I keep coming back
On the afternoon my bottle arrived, I quickly tore into the packaging, bypassing the admittedly gorgeous presentation because I just HAD to get my nose on it as quickly as possible.

The bottle was cold to the touch, having sat on my porch for several hours in the winter air making the whole thing feel perhaps heavier than usual. At first sniff, It was odd, even off putting. The petrichor and earthiness with sharp and demanding, and unmistakably smelled like damp wet crumbling stone. Having grown up around many limestone karst caves, the smell was instantly familiar.

However after a brief amount of time on the skin, the floral, musky, resinous notes began to open up, mixing with the damp stone to create some beautiful tension. The warmth of the base and the lightness of the floral notes paired against the sharp, cold, demanding stone notes such a pleasant contrast that I keep going back for more. The floral notes themselves even feel somewhat haunting.

The tension between the unpleasantness and pleasantness captures the essence of the film exactly.

Delicate petals in spring clinging to wet stone. A Gothic scent that doesn’t use blood or incense! I wish it lasted longer but I love it so much.

Freshly rained on cement, dead lilacs, grave dirt. Not for me, made me fell unsettled and sick. It's a vampire in a bottle. Hard pass.

Cold watercolor floral composition. The petrichor note is subtle. The lilac is delicate. White lace & pale skin in the moonlight. Romantic.

Cold mildewy fabric left too long in the washing machine. Thank god it doesn’t last long.

A dance friend sprayed this on me and it smells like a mossy cellar with a dirt floor in the best way! I couldn't stop sniffing!

Freshly brushed teeth, tooth decay, and cucumber drink all in one. A refreshing scent that is surprisingly pleasant.

Damp earth, dying flowers, rain. Cat pee in the dry down. Had a severe allergic reaction and won't wear again, but oddly - I don’t hate it!

This does indeed small like rain against the rubble of a destroyed church, but it's also very floral forward. Fresh, then wilting in beauty.

I've never loved lilacs, but I like this one. So cold and ethereal, with notes of true petrichor and damp. Wearable but interesting.
