partial eclipse, never reaching full dark
The first breath of Coeur Noir defies its brooding presentation with an unexpected lightness - a cool pastel candied dust, compressed powder sweetness, like fruit wisps and sugared flower petals ground with chalk. This is anchored by a woody, resinous vanilla, but rather than cream or confection, it calls to mind a delicate, aromatic booklet of papiers d'Armenie. The lightness is deceptive, though. As it settles on skin, the sweetness begins its slow retreat, like an eclipse gradually dimming the sky. What emerges is more contemplative - a dusky, myrrh-like quality, that smoky-sour-shivery incense that suggests the shadows promised by that black heart-shaped box, a liminal space of perpetual twilight chill, never reaching full dark.

spectral sugar
In the hospital we use this mastic gum + styrax agent called Mastisol to increase the adherence of dressings and it has a very distinctive, resin-y smell. Coeur Noir smells exactly like that, if someone was applying it to a ghost in a wedding dress. Sweet, sticky, distantly medicinal. Sugary melancholy. Not the quietest Heretic, but there's a very hushy feel about it. Agree with @deja1sabel who says "sweetness, but if it were found in a tomb."

Mental Snapshot: Ghost in a wedding dress. Fated to carry a slice of cake she will never taste. * Ernest Hemingway voice *

tl;dr: sad & sappy

vanilla in a tomb
opens with a blast of dry black pepper, almost savory, but quickly becomes a sensual vanilla, spiced, creamy but in a suede like way, and with dusty resins. It’s not as warm as I would’ve assumed, almost a little bit of a cold vanilla, with resinous undertones that ground it. The labdanum does a lot of the work here, to create that rich and deep weight to the scent, melding to make a pot of sweetness, but if it were found in a tomb. Interesting take on a vanilla

Formally Varied
Hm, already the second natural scent in a short time that refers by name to a black heart. The other was ‘Mon Coeur Noir’ by Saint d’Ici and turned out to be darker - just unfortunately not a great darkness, but rather the gloomy-musty variant. I prefer the "Mon"-less attempt a notch better, although it cannot seriously be called "black".

It opens with a waxy-plastic quality with a slight sharpness, where I would have initially guessed ginger rather than pepper, not least because of a diffuse hint of a spicy fruit note. Imagination? A scratchy underlying bittersweetness takes over. Additionally, it becomes a bit smoky. I think of green beans wrapped in bacon and fried. Oh no, that image doesn’t fit now. Or...?

The sweetness skims just barely past the theme of baked aroma, the wax helps to ensure that it doesn’t become as sharp as usual. Throughout the morning, I think of candied peanuts, later of burnt rice pudding or semolina porridge. A source of diffuse smokiness seems to be the vanilla, which would, to my knowledge, be an indication of naturalness.

Surprisingly, the scent as a whole is still not very sweet, certainly not overly sweet. A certain dry dustiness may be responsible for that. As if patchouli is involved. Moreover, the wax-plastic impression, like a red thread, runs from front to back through the scent, until it ends in the evening with - well, that was to be expected - waxy plastic-vanilla.

Perhaps ‘Coeur Noir’ is a good example regarding a suggestion I recently received from Angua. She mentioned that when sniffing pure, natural fragrance oils, they sometimes appear surprisingly artificial - because such things have become so foreign to us. However, this is relativized when wearing it or with some distance. It would be a plausible explanation for the presentation that today’s candidate puts forth.

PS: Although what I've described may have sounded quite varied at least in phases, the scent unfortunately carries a hint of monotony that I cannot concretely derive. ‘Coeur Noir’ is not bad, but it cannot excite me.

I thank KingLui for the sample.

Dark, brooding, resinous labdanum with sweet vanilla. I don’t get any pepper, but I do enjoy this scent.

Very resinous labdanum, where I thought it would be more of a pepper vanilla from the description. A rich, heavy skin scent

Waxy, balsamic, sweetish, without really being sweet, spicy. Could be a failed mainstream scent that lacks a clear direction.

Ethereal black pepper and sacred smoke illuminate a firmament of balsamic resins - cool, dark, and silvery-smoky.

The black heart isn't really that black, but rather dark-resinous-peppery-spicy with fine labdanum & a hint of vanilla. Mediocre.
