Grandma's Cedar Chest

This transports me back to my childhood, up in Grandma's attic, on a rare occasion when she opened up her cedar chest. That cedar chest was a wedding gift and as a kid, it was a mystical vessel of familial treasures: Valentine's and Christmas cards (some with pieces of arborvitae attached as decoration) my grandparents gave to each other through the years, Missals from parochial school in the 1930s still emanating fading hints of incense, embroidered handkerchiefs and linens, a set of pine rosary beads from Ste-Anne-de-Beauoré, Sterling silver Christmas ornaments from Reed & Barton, Prayer cards from funerals of long lost friends and relatives, a couple wigs done up in bouffants, and yes a fox stole - complete with snout, feet and eyes.

This perfume is that. The smell of that cedar wardrobe in Grandma Gaydasz's attic. The smell of cedar mingling with the scent of the treasures within. What a glorious way to smell!

Forest at sunset on a dry summer day

This is review for Blood Cedar (2024) from the Blood Box collection.

This perfume turned me into a lover of cedar!

It's my second favorite from the collection after Dragon's Blood. This is forest on a late summer afternoon, when the sun is starting to set. The weather is dry and the wind carries the resinous scent of the woods far. I have ~literally~ been in a forest that smells like this.

The only downside, it is on the weaker side of Heretic's longevity, only up to 4 hours...

Handsome scent, but projection & longevity are dealbreakers

This is a really nice, high-quality cedar scent. While there's a few other coniferous trees among the notes (pine, spruce, fir), I couldn't really parse them out - I pretty much just got cedar. But boy, it's the best pure cedar fragrance I've smelled. Reminded me of an expertly-crafted cedar chest, cedar closet, or Christmas store. That said, for some reason I distinctly got more of a furniture cedar, rather than a forest cedar - if that makes any sense.

For the first 30 minutes to 1 hour, the projection was VERY mild; I could smell it on myself, but I think it only was radiating out about 1-2 feet max. Then somewhere around the 30 min - 1 hour mark, this became a skin scent only. After about 4 hours, it was pretty much gone even from the skin. Heretic's thing is that their scents are from plant-based ingredients, so I guess their mildness is the trade off. Despite their affordable price, I can't justify a purchase given the extremely short amount of time the scent lasts.

Halfway Solidly Fragranced

While sniffing the tester initially suggested a representative from the (CdG) 'Hinoki' direction, nothing of that is noticeable after application. Instead, there is a strong dose of fir and pine cut, quite green. However, something ethereal quickly joins in, creating an aura of bronchial balm. Not helpful? Well then, let's let the ethereal fade and push in sugary sweetness: and there you have it, the cough syrup.

Only after an hour or so does a (frankincense?)-sourness make me think of the forest again: green, soft needles. More Douglas fir than spruce. The latter is primarily present, so to speak, via the back door, as the remaining trace of sweetness now comes across as fir honey.

By early afternoon, the cautious frankincense seems to be substituted by the sometimes observed vetiver sourness, which in turn gradually gives way to light wood. Overall, it slightly reminds me of 'Scandalwood' from the same house - not least because of the vetiver touch that lingers until the evening, for which we should be grateful at this point. The oak moss, on the other hand, unfortunately presents itself very reservedly (if at all). I have experienced this more generously portioned in other American fragrances. I would have wished for that today as well; after all, the natural stuff can do something!

Conclusion: Here, it is halfway solidly fragranced, greened, and wooded. However, the scent did not leave a deeper impression on me.
