Hollzy- Smoky Vanilla
I had read quite a bit about the fragrance Habanita by Molinard on Parfumo, and the information and scent impressions from other perfume enthusiasts made me very curious. Everything somehow fit into the palette of my fragrance preferences. When I visited a well-known old perfumery in Frankfurt in January 2013, I asked, with a handwritten list of rarities in hand, about "Habanita." The knowledgeable saleswoman could show me little, but she denied having Habanita. It was no longer available. However, another colleague overheard the conversation and mentioned that there was still one single box of the rare concoction in stock. And whether I would like to sniff the scent from the remnants of a tester from a hidden drawer. I was overjoyed and did as recommended. The scent that then reached my nose was extremely intense and unusual. A "spice balloon of unimaginable proportions." At first, I thought of clove, even though it is not listed in the fragrance description. As a second impression, nutmeg and wood-tinged flowers like rose and jasmine seemed to gain access. I went outside and waited for the further development of the fragrance. After a while, a "Encre Noir"-like vetiver accord emerged, with a fine hint of something vanillic, which stood in stark contrast to the previous impressions. An interesting tension built up, much to the delight of my nose. In the "competition of fragrance notes," there were no real "winners." Rather, it seems that woody, earthy vetiver is enveloped by a warm vanilla wrap. Without sliding into the cloying. The spices of the fragrance remain unobtrusively present. The flowers too. I bought the perfume. 100 ml Extrait for 80 euros. The pump spray of the bottle surprised me. Very original and not present in any of my other perfumes. The bottle is screwable, so I can always decant a small amount of the scent into a travel spray. Since I have never smelled the other versions of Habanita, I cannot compare them with my fragrance. I can only say that Habanita is one of the longest-lasting and most exciting winter perfumes in my collection. By the way, I once read that in the twenties, cigarettes "for LADIES" were scented with it, and the fragrance was considered fashionable among the so-called "Garconnes," boyish women. For me, thus, a scent of the "ROARING TWENTIES." Excellent.

Retro Movie in the Mind
After regaining my consciousness, I Googled "Galbanum." It consists of resin, rubber, and an essential oil, which gives it a penetratingly unpleasant aromatic smell. The taste is said to be bitterly sharp and burning. And then: funny! After spraying it, I immediately had a strange smell of window putty in my nose, and I read further: Galbanum is sometimes listed as an ingredient in putties.

My skin brings out this scent note so incredibly strongly that I want to wash off Habanita immediately. It almost burns in my nose and is simply not pleasant to smell.

But I hold on, and slowly this special dense and opulent Habanita scent note comes through. This rich-powdery unsweetened-vanilla amber-woody soft note. Like a very old-fashioned but expensive face cream. To me, it smelled like the wealthy and well-situated wives of entrepreneurs in my childhood. Very elegant, very well-groomed, very well-dressed. I imagine that Habanita would perfectly match expensive camel-colored cashmere.

End of the 70s, I am in elementary school: In my small hometown in Lower Saxony, there was exactly one rich entrepreneurial family. He was 20 years older than she and already had gray hair. They had two small children and a modern villa with a driveway! Inside, it was spacious like in "Dallas," with several open living areas connected. In the expansive garden, there was a tennis court. And the madness for us small-town kids: they had a large indoor pool. And I think of this entrepreneur's wife when I smell Habanita. Who knows, maybe she really wore it, and my subconscious has stored this memory and is now shoveling it forward into my brain.

When I sniff at the spray head, meaning my skin is not involved, I can recognize this Habanita note even better. But Habanita is not wearable for me due to the oversized Galbanum note. The scent simply remains very dry-dusty-bitter "with animal" and does not develop this chic opulent rrrr-note for me. But I really enjoyed the mental time travel back to my childhood.

Habanita "light"
Hmmm ... I don't find the "old" Habanita and the "new" Habanita 1849 to be that different at all, at least that's what my nose says in direct comparison:

I received a sample of Habanita 1849 from the lovely DeGe, and I had a bottle of "old" Habanita sent to me from FragranceX (USA) for almost no money (before the Euro crisis :-) ). At least I assume it's the "old" Habanita because the bottle has no tassel and because it is labeled with the now banned oak moss here in Germany (it's a wonder that this hazardous material was able to pass through the EU border at all).

The comparison test showed that the "old" Habanita is better. The fragrance name "Habanita 1849" somehow suggests that it is a particularly original composition. But that's misleading; a more accurate name would be "Habanita light" (or L'Eau d'Habanita, or Habanita légère, or Habanita Tendre ...). Because H. 1849 - I completely agree with DeGe - smells like a zeitgeist-friendly smoothed-out light version of the admittedly very idiosyncratic and bold "old" Habanita. It clearly goes in the same direction, but Habanita goes all out, while Habanita 1849 only shyly dribbles.

What this new edition is supposed to be, I really don't know, because Habanita 1849 is also a heavy scent that is not exactly office-friendly. Habanita fans are certainly not looking for office suitability. And if one is in the mood for a heavy scent, then the "old" Habanita, with its unmistakable opulence, is definitely the better choice.

Black as the bottle is my mood
Oh, how disappointed I am!
Today I tested my NEW Habanita bottle that I bought some time ago. One has to get to the bottom of these reformulations after all.
I can hardly see the keyboard through my tears, forgive me.
The pyramid is what the reformulation has made of my beloved Gypsy. It doesn't help that they added 1849. The fruits, the iris, the lilac, benzoin, leather... all gone.
The once wildly flying curly mane is now a neatly styled Aniston hairstyle. The red lips are now painted in nude-pink. The little head is freshly blow-dried, just fresh.
Then the figure!!! My goodness, where is the voluptuousness, the well-filled white ruffled blouse? The swinging hips in the deep red skirt with black lace? No more Lacroix opulence, just Sander straightforwardness. She has lost a lot of weight, the little one. Instead of being busty, she now comes across as Kate Moss-flat-chested, but that fits better with the pink T-shirt and boyfriend jeans.
Excuse me, I have to cry again.
Of course, a distant resemblance can still be recognized. But the mature cousin has mutated into the little sister. The little slut can't even fit into the beautiful one's clothes; she should change the bottle!
Had I known this, I wouldn't have been so wasteful with my original stock. Now I have just about 5ml left to mourn.
The new trend that is being forced upon us is not bad, but it cannot be compared in the slightest to the style of my beloved enchantress, who was able to:
... to cast a spell on you, baby.
Sniffle......

And one more thing, the longevity that I praised in the original is gone. Half-time, nothing more. Pf-f-f-f-f-cry.

A very old-fashioned scent, "Revuemädchen mit Puderdose" by Dawamesk sums it up. Just sweet and powdery, sillage/durability so-so.
