The fine strong silky train
Silky - fresh - powdery allspice is fine, but strongly creamy - aromatic - sweet - spicy to leave a short attention-grabbing oudigen impression, which ends brightly resinous.

First you can perceive a very intense fresh tingling lemony - fruity note, which brings very soft, very discreetly powdery traits with it and I first typed on mandarin and mint, orange blossom and pepper also came to my mind but when I smell a little "more", it is almost silky traits in already sweet beer-like and I finally arrived at juniper berry, which is not entirely unlike the smell of pimento.

A little bit later you notice something that in my opinion is not so often to be found in fragrances anymore:

The fragrance has opened his heart and that in a completely different way.

The fragrance continues to develop during this time without losing the theme
It's rather a so-called click effect that signals to me - that's what the fragrance is about.

30 minutes later the silky train still tickles in its fullest and clearest aura, but now a pleasant, slightly creamy and wonderfully aromatic sweet soft volume from the cardamom receives and the fragrance something attractively smart gives
In the course of time, Wood & Spices becomes substantially spicy, so that the fragrance gets something strong and fine and comes from the sandalwood.

To begin with, this fragrance has an appealingly dense and voluminous, already a little dull and very slightly dusty, very delicate woody layer perceptible, which also brings with it very fine sour touches and here I thought of tobacco, but also oud, whose fragrance impression leaves an entertaining impression, which will be different for everyone.

What remains is the engaging voluminousness that the fragrance also knows how to demand and that in a very pleasant, but also dominantly attention-grabbing way, as I find.

And all this in one beautiful smooth and fluffy train.

In the last 3.5 hours everything is still there, the components have only gone into the background and become very fine, almost transparent and get until the end of the fragrance a clarifying illuminating resinous touch and the incense is to be owed.

Unfortunately, I couldn't perceive Vetiver, but I can imagine very well that this component was used for background music, or is even responsible for the sour accents mentioned above.

The fragrance lasts a total of 8 hours on my skin.

The Sillage is in the first hour very well room-filling and then oscillates 4 hours on a very clear arm length, before it minimizes itself in calm steps, until the smell finally completely fades out
I would like to express my sincere thanks to our perfume "Mydarkflower" for the sample.

The familiar with digital honey plus soap
I would like to share my impression of Wood & Spices with you.

To say it up front. I love this fragrance, which in my eyes is an absolute all-rounder. I can imagine it anywhere for any occasion. Maybe not in the height of summer, but that too has yet to be tested.

My impression of Wood and Spices is as follows: Take Sculpture Homme Eau de Toilette and increase its longevity and projection. Now pour away about 15% of it.

Now take a glass of honey (an artificial, digital honey) but in a very pleasant way. Dissolve a bar of curd soap in this glass. This nice curd soap that you can smell in Italy, for example, when you walk past the detergent shelf in the supermarket.

Once we have stirred it all together, we fill in the missing 15% and season with pepper.

That's how it smells to me for the first 3-4 hours. Sculpture Homme Eau de Toilette in adult. Later, a spiciness is added that I can't quite describe. And after 8 hours I can still clearly perceive it all.

I would rate the longevity and projection as typical for Montale.

Price/performance is absolutely fine, as you really don't have to overspray.

The flacon is a matter of taste and you can also put it in the back of the cupboard :)

Sorry, but...
There is something in Montale that fascinates me. It’s amazing how they ruthlessly bottle the worst “cheap-designer-in-disguise” scents in a niche dress, and manage to actually sell them. Some are actually decent, but most of them are just tacky cheap stuff. Still, they’re there, and they’re niche. However... Wood and Spices, friends, is their masterpiece – their “IgNobel” winning scent so far for me. Basically it smells exactly (I mean it: exactly) like those modern “aromatic fougères” cheapos, the woody-ozonic-spicy-fresh colognes like Ferrari scents, or Police. Completely, nauseatingly synthetic, flashy and tacky, despicably stuffed with metallic stuff and artificial “roundness”. Trust me, I am not being too grave or severe: it’s utter supermarket rubbish. Many niche fans want to smell expensive: Wood and Spices smells terribly *inexpensive*, instead. In perspective, I should raise my ratings of all other Montale’s, as this one is really the worst of them all. One of the worst scents I’ve ever tested.

Wood & Spices - the name says it all!
Now a few words about Wood & Spices from Montale.

Fragrance: Spicy, woody, sweet, fresh, slightly balsamic and therefore slightly oriental. Less loud than most other Montale fragrances. The oriental twist still makes the fragrance interesting for European noses without being offensive. In my opinion, a unisex masculine fragrance that resonates particularly well with women.

Person profile: 20-35 years young, male

Longevity: On my skin I achieve approx. 4-5h clear projection and the fragrance is perceptible on the skin for up to 12-13 hours, which is absolutely fine for the price of approx. 70-90 euros.

Sillage: Decent, but clearly below that of representatives such as Montale - Arabians Tonka.

Flacon: Like all Montale flacons, they look stylish, but do not feel valuable in the hand due to the lack of weight. Due to the material used (aluminum), it is also not possible to easily see how much has been used (the remaining amount of perfume must be recorded by weighing).

As with any Montale fragrance, a blind purchase is not advisable. However, the fragrance is less of a challenge compared to other Montale representatives. This can be explained by its easy wearability in almost all seasons (except for a hot summer day) and in everyday life. This makes Wood & Spices an interesting all-rounder from Montale for me.

I hope I was able to make the purchase decision easier for someone here ;).

Have fun testing Wood & Spices!

1990s Redux
I have 2 Montale selections and they both serve one very specific purpose - nostalgia for the 1990s and that is it. When I was on the cusp of turning 40, I bought several 1990s to early 2000s era frags for the magic of olfactive scent memory and feel nostalgia for younger, more care free, and quite plainly for my life experience, more fun times.

Did they do the trick? I suppose, albeit in a lesser fashion than I’d imagined they would. My nose felt they were less than they had been - be it the quality of oils used, IFRA changes that occured and necessitated altered formulations, or simply watered down offerings due to the frags being selections that had gone through multiple reformulations in the years since they’ve fallen out of fashion en masse. Tommy, Hugo, The Dreamer, Dunhill Desire Blue were all standbys in my teen years rotation. Sculpture was one I didn’t personally own, but I knew several that had it and would “borrow” some sprays from time to time.

Enter Montale’s Fougeres Marines and Wood & Spices. Off the top Fougeres just hits my nose like a 90s one two pinch of Tommy and Hugo. At opening much more Tommy and into dry down sort of an equal mix of the two. I’d heard / seen several compare Wood & Spices to Sculpture, The Dreamer, and Desire Blue and to my nose I get equal parts of all of those.

I don’t wear either of them often and while I’ve got several fbs from the sister company, Mancera, and enjoy those quite a bit, I have not, and don’t plan on delving deeper into Montale. They hit their sweet spot for me and there they shall remain within my fragrance wardrobe, no more, no less.

If you, too, are looking for that 90s nostalgia but from a brand that offers options that project and last as long as I would imagine one could desire, and don’t want thinner or watered down versions, while being willing to pay a tad more in line with what those 90s frags went for back in those days, this may hit that sweet spot.

I enjoy the heck out of some of my more refined niche frags, but I can also appreciate these for what they are. I say that because I know Pierre Montale’s works can spark “controversy” within the fragrance community. To some they’re just a synthetic mess, to some they’re an affordable gateway to niche, to some they’re absolutely outstanding. I appreciate them for what they are. Some of my Manceras I can’t imagine parting with. Are they going to hit my nose like Roja, Royal Crown, Stéphane Humbert Lucas, Francesca Bianchi, among others - no, certainly not. However, they do, at times and situationally hit my nose as simply perfecto for what my nose craves. These 2 fit the perfecto bill when I want that 90s feel and for that reason, I couldn’t imagine wanting to ever sell or trade them away. Sillage, Projection, and Longevity, like all Montale and Mancera I’ve experienced is about as potent as I could want. Refinement and quality of ingredients is lower spectrum of niche - they’re synthetic and not “natural ingredient” smelling, but they’re as good as it gets for doing what they do and what my expectations could be for their doing so.
