Beautiful … but misnamed!
There is no doubt that Ta'if by Ormonde Jayne is a beautiful fragrance, cast in the mold of a floral oriental. The problem here is that when I want to smell roses from Ta'if, I don't need all of the other bits and pieces, however beautiful they may be.

I don't think it is fair to call this fragrance Ta'if, but then that is just the purist in me speaking. While roses from this mountainous region of Saudi Arabia might well belong to the Rosa damascena trigintipetala variety of Roses, their fragrance is definitely affected by the region in which they are grown. Although differences in scent might be minimal, the Wardh Taifi is known for its intensity, even above that of its Kazanlik Bulgarian cousin.
Ormonde Jayne's Ta'if is not as much of a Rose soliflore as it is a floral fragrance containing Rose … and quite a bit of Jasmine. There is also a marked spiciness here provided by the Saffron and Pepper, while the Orange Blossom tends to be a little deafening through the heart phase of this fragrance.

Pure Rose oil from Taif has a sparkling quality, which I have sometimes likened to the whistling of a scimitar blade through the air. To my nose, it is pitched higher than the almost velveteen warmth of Damascus Rose, exhibiting a keener edge.
Unfortunately, the Rose in this fragrance is 'gentrified', if that makes any sense … its 'wild' character has been somewhat suppressed!
The sillage and longevity here are average to good … I just don't find all that much ingenuity in this house. I have the full (gorgeously packaged!) set of samples but I have yet to find one that is mind-blowing, other than just very nice.

This offering by OJ is definitely a gorgeous fragrance and I do recommend it to those who love a good floriental. My only disappointment is that this is not a true 'Taif' Rose.

A Splendid Floriental Saffron Blend
Ormonde Jayne TA'IF is a splendid saffron rose composition to my nose. There is enough saffron here to adorn the rose perfectly without overwhelming it. The rose and the saffron meld together to produce a truly floriental experience, which I myself would not characterize so much as a rose as an oriental perfume. I believe that the orange blossom and the peach are contributing to the de-rosification of the perfume as a whole as well.

The longevity of TA'IF is excellent, and the sillage big enough to remind me of its presence hours after donning this delightful creation. Although this is fairly linear, for that reason, it's consistently compelling from start to finish. Highly recommended to rose and oriental lovers alike!

Vaguely peachy florals
People use the words 'rich', 'dark', and 'exotic' to describe Ta'if, suggesting a texture as heavy as velvet - close to Lyric Woman or Portrait of a Lady even - whereas all I experience is a sheer peppery floral layered over a musky, dried-fruit base. Even the praline/date note is sheer and sort of dry. I don't even experience the rose in this as straight-up rose but as a big, blowsy peach and orange blossom chiffonade, with only brief flashes here and there of something that might be interpreted as a tart, green rose swimming in the murk.

The dry down is a slightly powdery musk with a streak of dates running through it. It provides a very pretty end, and also quite a deliberately perfumey one, I think. It doesn't tilt you too literally in the direction of any one particular note, but bathes you in a pink-tinged miasma of musk, fruit, orange blossoms, and caramel that reminds me of some of the prettier dry downs in designer perfumery, such as Coco Mademoiselle, or Elie Saab.

So, not the rose of my dreams, or even a rose at all (to my nose), but it sure wins on the account of being a winningly pretty floral overall. I bought a partially used bottle and used it all up so take my grumpy words about with a grain of salt. I have to say, towards the end, I did begin to appreciate the piquancy of the pink pepper brightness up top and the saffron-tinged, peachy florals in the base.

Vintage florals morph into sweet, vanilla drydown
Sooo... I'm still wondering if my sample is the problem or if my skin chemistry is the culprit. I was expecting to love this fragrance based on the notes, but I didn't get what I was hoping for.

It starts very fresh, almost synthetic-like with the pink pepper very subdued on the spiciness. I get absolutely no dates and the saffron only comes later. The latter is very metallic when it appears, almost like smelling fresh blood (?!). A bouquet of florals does make an appearance, but they're all pretty non-descript. Florals here are vintage-like, almost lipsticky and made me think of what my grandmother would wear. Drydown is powdery and sweet due to the vanilla, but also warm and slightly honeyed-like due to the amber and broom.

It's not bad, but it clearly has a specific vibe going here, for which I am not the target. If you love fresh, vintage, floral scents, this could be something nice, but I do recommend testing it out before. All in all, it's a like, not a love and personally, it's missing that little extra oomph.

Hot and Cold
Although I intended to proceed alphabetically when testing the Ormond Jane fragrances, I threw the alphabet out the window when I discovered a rose scent in the Ormond Jane sample set.
It seems that lately, I keep coming across more and more of these wonderful, hidden rose fragrances. Starting with Sinan, through Durer, and now here with Ta'if.

And the latter is something special. A truly peppery opening is followed by the rose, what can I say, the ROSES. Velvety petals that emit a strong, warm, and dark scent. It reminds me of La Rose de Rosine Rose Extrême, which, however, has a different progression.

This is how rose should smell!

An absolutely interesting highlight is the peppery top note. It is not sharp, but rather spicy-peppery, like freshly ground pepper. At that moment, there is no sign of rose yet.

But then: with incredible force - like blooming in fast motion - the rose comes forth. Strong, powerful, dark, soft, and completely unsweet. This is entirely to my taste.

And even though the rose becomes finer and more delicate later on, the base is so finely dosed that it still allows the rose to maintain its place without making any individual scent components noticeable.

Despite the opulence, the fragrance is quite close to the body, with no long trail or cloud of scent around the wearer. And no, gentlemen, I would not limit this scent to "wearer." I can easily imagine it on a "wearer" as well.

The longevity is quite decent. Worn last night, it was still there this morning!

Not only for me as a rose lover, this fragrance is likely to be a revelation. It is truly worth experiencing this scent more than just testing it.

My rose fragrance collection would be incomplete without this rose! I am just contemplating whether to go for the Extrait or the Eau de Parfum...

very elegant, almost somehow vintage, sublime, delicate rose scent which is not there to slap you or anyone around you in the face, but to enphasize

Fresh, metallic scent that slowly morphs into a bouquet of florals. Ultimately dries down to a powdery, sweet vanilla. Missing that oomph.

Fruity oriental rose with a golden shimmer. Despite its volume, AugustA feels light, reminiscent of silk, and is great to wear on a hot summer evening.

The rose is beautifully creamy. There's a spicy mist that hovers like a yellowed veil over the rose, making the scent feel a bit musty.
